Cleland is a village near Motherwell and Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of 2018, it has a population of about 3,000. The village has a strong coal mining heritage, and is a typical example of a working class village in North Lanarkshire and the Glasgow area. Due to its location, despite being at the heart of North Lanarkshire, the village is isolated, geographically and culturally, from surrounding towns such as Motherwell, Shotts and Wishaw.

Her main research area is in the field of schizophrenia and psychotic illness. She is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Assistant Principal for Mental Health Research Development and Public Understanding of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. She is best known for her 1976 groundbreaking study that showed brain abnormalities in schizophrenic patients compared to a control group.

She was previously acting chair of the GMC between August 2021 and May 2022, the chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges between 2017 and 2020 and the president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) between 2014 and 2017.
John Menzies Campbell FRSE FDS RCSEd, DDS was a Scottish dentist and dental historian who became a collector of dental books, paintings and dental instruments. At the time of his death he had amassed what was regarded as one of the largest collections of dental memorabilia in the world. He bequeathed his picture and instrument collection to the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) where it formed the Menzies Campbell Dental Museum, and is now known as the Menzies Campbell Collection. His books and dental advertisements were left to the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng).
Robert Freer FRSE FRCPE was a soldier and academic, who taught medicine at the University of Glasgow. He was Regius Professor of Medicine from 1796 until his death. He was twice President of the Medical Society of Edinburgh. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1797.
Dr Andrew Fergus Hewat FRSE was a Scottish physician involved with mental health. He donated the Fergus Hewat Cup to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an annual golf championship. This is played between the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and a combined team from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Maud Perry Menzies O.St.J. was a Scottish physician who specialised in community medicine. She introduced significant improvements to public health care in Glasgow.
William Paton Cleland FRCS FRCP FACS was an Australian born British cardiothoracic surgeon and was one of the early pioneers of open-heart surgery.
