Non-coding DNA sequences are components of an organism's DNA that do not encode protein sequences. Some non-coding DNA is transcribed into functional non-coding RNA molecules. Other functions of non-coding DNA include the transcriptional and translational regulation of protein-coding sequences, scaffold attachment regions, origins of DNA replication, centromeres and telomeres. Its RNA counterpart is non-coding RNA.

Alfred Henry Sturtevant was an American geneticist. Sturtevant constructed the first genetic map of a chromosome in 1911. Throughout his career he worked on the organism Drosophila melanogaster with Thomas Hunt Morgan. By watching the development of flies in which the earliest cell division produced two different genomes, he measured the embryonic distance between organs in a unit which is called the sturt in his honor. In 1967, Sturtevant received the National Medal of Science.

Behavioural genetics, also referred to as behaviour genetics, is a field of scientific research that uses genetic methods to investigate the nature and origins of individual differences in behaviour. While the name "behavioural genetics" connotes a focus on genetic influences, the field broadly investigates genetic and environmental influences, using research designs that allow removal of the confounding of genes and environment. Behavioural genetics was founded as a scientific discipline by Francis Galton in the late 19th century, only to be discredited through association with eugenics movements before and during World War II. In the latter half of the 20th century, the field saw renewed prominence with research on inheritance of behaviour and mental illness in humans, as well as research on genetically informative model organisms through selective breeding and crosses. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, technological advances in molecular genetics made it possible to measure and modify the genome directly. This led to major advances in model organism research and in human studies, leading to new scientific discoveries.

Stephen W. Scherer Canadian scientist

Stephen Wayne "Steve" Scherer is a Canadian scientist who studies genetic variation in human disease. He obtained his PhD at the University of Toronto under Professor Lap-chee Tsui. Together they founded Canada's first human genome centre, the Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) at the Hospital for Sick Children. He continues to serve as director of TCAG, and is also director of the McLaughlin Centre at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine.

Philip Awadalla is a professor of medical and population genetics at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and the Department of Molecular Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is the National Scientific Director of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project (CPTP) and Executive Director of the Ontario Health Study. He is also the Executive Scientific Director of the Genome Canada Genome Technology Platform, the Canadian Data Integration Centre. Professor Awadalla was the Executive Scientific Director of the CARTaGENE biobank, a regional cohort member of the CPTP, from 2009 to 2015, and is currently a scientific advisor for this and other scientific and industry platforms. At the OICR, he is Director of Computational Biology.

Usha Vijayraghavan is on the faculty of the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Her major research interests are Molecular Genetics, Plant Development.

Complex traits

Complex traits, also known as quantitative traits, are traits that do not behave according to simple Mendelian inheritance laws. More specifically, their inheritance cannot be explained by the genetic segregation of a single gene. Such traits show a continuous range of variation and are influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Compared to strictly Mendelian traits, complex traits are far more common, and because they can be hugely polygenic, they are studied using statistical techniques such as QTL mapping rather than classical genetics methods. Examples of complex traits include height, circadian rhythms, enzyme kinetics, and many diseases including diabetes and Parkinson's disease. One major goal of genetic research today is to better understand the molecular mechanisms through which genetic variants act to influence complex traits.

Genetics Research is an open access, peer-reviewed scientific journal covering all aspects of human and animal genetics, reporting key findings on genomes, genes, mutations and molecular interactions, extending out to developmental, evolutionary, and population genetics as well as ethical, legal and social aspects. It was established in 1960 as Genetical Research, obtaining its current name in 2008. The founding editor-in-chief was Eric C.R. Reeve.

Genes & Immunity is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering the intersection between immunology and genetics. It was established in 1999 and is published eight times per year by Springer Nature. The editors-in-chief are Thomas Brunner and Marie-Lise Gougeon. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2017 impact factor of 2.339, ranking it 107th out of 155 journals in the category "Immunology" and 98th out of 151 in the category "Genetics & Heredity".
