Jackson Orem is a Ugandan physician, oncologist and researcher. He has served as the director of the Uganda Cancer Institute, since 2004. [1]
Orem was born in Uganda and he attended local primary and secondary schools. His father was a driver and salesman. His mother was a housewife. After high school, he was admitted to Makerere University School of Medicine, the oldest in East Africa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree. After internship, he was re-admitted to Makerere University to pursue a Master of Medicine degree (MMed), in Internal Medicine, graduating in the early 2000s. [1]
In 2002, he left Uganda for Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, to pursue a two-year Fellowship in hematology and oncology at Case Western Reserve University. After graduation in 2004, he returned to Uganda. Later, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Stockholm County in Sweden. [1] [2]
In 2004, Orem returned to Uganda to head the Uganda Cancer Institute. He was the only trained, qualified oncologist in a country of 26 million people at that time. In the beginning his case load was in excess of 10,000 patients annually. [1]
In 2004, he began collaborating with Dr. Corey Casper and others from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch), in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. That collaboration led to Fred Hutch offering two annual slots to MMed graduates from Uganda, to pursue two-year medical oncology fellowships in Seattle. [1] Dr Victoria Walusansa, the first graduate of that program in now the Deputy Medical Director at Uganda Cancer Institute. [3]
Dr Orem's research interests are in infection-related cancers, especially viral-related ones. He is also interested in the treatment of cancer in low resource settings. [4]
Dr Orem is a Senior Consultant in Oncology at the Uganda Ministry of Health. He is an honorary faculty member at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, and is an external faculty at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is a member of the Non-Communicable Disease Technical working group of the Uganda Ministry of Health and chairs the adverse events and surveillance committee of the HPV vaccine program in the country. Dr Orem is associate director of the UCI/Hutchison Cancer Center Alliance collaboration between the Uganda Cancer Institute and the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center. He is a member of the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC), NCI international BL Clinical Care Committee and is the Principal Investigator for the AIDS Clinical Trial Group. [2]

David M. Serwadda is a Ugandan physician, medical researcher, academic, public health specialist and medical administrator. Currently he is a Professor of Public Health at Makerere University School of Public Health, one of the schools of Makerere University College of Health Sciences, a semi-autonomous constituent college of Makerere University, the oldest university in Uganda. Serwadda is also a founding member of Accordia Global Health Foundation's Academic Alliance.
As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Charles Mark Lwanga Olweny is a Ugandan physician, oncologist, academic and medical researcher. Currently he is a professor of medicine and Immediate past vice-chancellor at Uganda Martyrs University, based at Nkozi, Mpigi District, in Central Uganda.

Suresh Hariram Advani is an oncologist who pioneered hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in India. Struck by poliomyelitis at the age of 8, he studied at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, where he obtained his MBBS and MD degrees. Established in 1998, this nonprofit provides clinical oncology care for patients treated at its three partner organizations: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Children's and UW Medicine. Together, these four institutions form the Fred Hutch/University of Washington Cancer Consortium.
