Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is a constituent college of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university. The schools of the college offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the biomedical sciences, health sciences, human medicine and public health, covering a broad range of disciplines and specialties. [2]

Location

The College's campus is located on Mulago Hill, in northeast Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city, approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) north of the city's central business district. [3] This is about 3 kilometres (2 mi) northeast of Makerere University Main Campus. [4] The schools of the college are spread across the southern, western, northern and eastern parts of Mulago Hill and include Mulago Hospital Complex, the college's teaching hospital. The coordinates of the college are: 00°20'18.0"N 32°34'38.0"E (Latitude:0.338333; Longitude:32.577213). [5]

Overview

The college was created by Makerere University in 2007. At that time, it consisted of four schools, with the college headed by a Principal and a Deputy Principal, while each school was headed by a Dean. [6] In June 2016, at the insistence of East African Community (EAC) Medical and Dental Practitioners Boards and Councils, the college created Makerere University School of Dentistry, increasing the number of schools to five. [7]

Albert Cook Memorial Library

The Albert Cook Memorial Library, also Albert Cook Medical Library is the main library of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. The library, named after Sir Albert Cook (22 March 1870 – 23 April 1951), the founder of Mulago Hospital and Mengo Hospital, was established in 1924, by Dr. Cook. The library houses an archive of Dr. Albert Cook's original handwritten patient notes dating back to 1900. [8]

The library underwent a renovation in 1968 and another major renovation in 2018; the last one funded by a USh197 billion (US$52,000) grant from Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, [8] Uganda's largest commercial bank by assets. [9]

Between 1924 and 2007, the school was part of the Makerere University School of Medicine and constituted the pre-clinical departments of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and pathology. In 2007, those departments were organized into a separate school. MakSBS provides biomedical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

George Barnabas Kirya, MBChB, MMed, MSc, Dip.Bact., LLD (Honorary), is a Ugandan physician, academic, microbiologist, politician, and diplomat. He served as the chairman of the Uganda Health Services Commission from 2007 to 2012. Previously, from 1997 until 2003, he served as Uganda's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Nelson Kawulukusi Sewankambo, MBChB, MMed, MSc, FRCP, LLD (Hon), sometimes spelled as Nelson Ssewankambo, is a Ugandan physician, academician, medical researcher, and medical administrator. He is a professor of medicine and former principal of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, a semi-autonomous constituent college of Makerere University.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Hakim Sendagire is a Ugandan physician, biochemist, academic and medical administrator. Currently he is the Dean at Habib Medical School, College of Health Sciences of the Islamic University in Uganda, a private university, one of the 41 universities in the country, as at February 2015.

John Odiri Ogund Omagino, MBChB, MMed, FCOSECSA, is a thoracic and cardiac surgeon in Uganda. He is the executive director of the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI). He is also a member of the board of directors of UHI.

Professor Charles Ibingira is a Ugandan surgeon, academic and medical administrator. He is the Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He was appointed to that position in November 2015, on a four-year renewable contract. He has previously served as the Dean of Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences, from 2010 until 2014.

Sarah Kiguli, MBChB, MMed (Pediatrics), MHPE, is a Ugandan pediatrician, academic, and medical researcher. She is a professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the Makerere University School of Medicine, a component of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Charles Kabugo is a senior consultant internal medicine physician in the Uganda Ministry of Health. He is the executive director of Kiruddu General Hospital, in Makindye Division, in the south of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. He was appointed to that position on 9 August 2018.

Nehemiah Katusiime is an Ugandan consultant obstetrician and gynecologist in the Uganda Ministry of Health. He is the executive director of Kawempe General Hospital, in Kawempe Division, in northern Kampala, the capital and largest of Uganda. He was appointed to that position on 9 August 2018.

Pauline Byakika–Kibwika, is a Ugandan specialist physician, internist, epidemiologist, academic and researcher, who serves as a Professor of Medicine at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. From 2017 until 2019, she served as the Vice President of the Uganda Medical Association, a professional industry association, that champions medical doctors' interests in the county.

Sabrina Bakeera Kitaka, commonly known as Sabrina Kitaka, is a Ugandan physician, pediatrician, pediatric infectious diseases specialist and academic, who serves as a senior lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics at Makerere University School of Medicine.

Michael Grace Kawooya is a Ugandan physician, academic, researcher and academic administrator, who serves as Director at the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI). He is a Professor (emeritus) of Radiology at Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Catherine Abbo is a Ugandan researcher, medical doctor and academic. She is currently serving as a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences at Makerere University.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tonny Stone Luggya</span> Ugandan researcher, doctor, academic administrator (born 1971)

Anthony Fredrick Luggya, also known as Tonny Stone Luggya, is a Ugandan researcher, physician, anesthesiologist, academic, academic administrator, sports administrator and former rugby player. He is currently serving as the head of the Department of Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine at the School of Medicine in the College of Health Sciences of Makerere University. He also concurrently serves as a staff anesthesiologist at the Mulago National Referral Hospital accident and emergency unit. He was an active player in the sport of rugby between 1997 and 2018. In December 2021, he was elected and currently serving as the chairman of Kampala Old Boys (KOBS) Rugby Football Club.
