Jacob Martin Portrait is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and record producer. He is the bassist of the New Zealand psychedelic rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and a current member of the Portland-based alternative rock band Blouse.

Career

Portrait was born in Greenbrae, California. Growing up, he's lived in Vancouver, Washington as well as Eugene, Medford and Portland, Oregon. Portrait is currently based in Brooklyn, New York, where he runs a private recording studio.

Portrait started the psychedelic rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra in 2010 along with Ruban Nielson, and is currently playing with the band as their bassist. [1] He has worked with the band on their albums Multi-Love (2015), Sex & Food (2018), and IC-01 Hanoi (2018).

Portrait teamed up with singer-guitarist Charlie Hilton and bassist Patrick Adams to form the alternative rock band Blouse in Portland. [2] [3] The band's self-titled first album was released in 2011, and the band's second album Imperium was released in 2013. [4]

Some of Portrait’s most recent writing and production credits include Lil Yachty’s album Let’s Start Here. (2023) [5] and Montell Fish’s album CHARLOTTE (2024). [6] In 2024, he’s also written and produced on Marc Rebillet’s “Vibes Alright”, [7] Christopher Owens’ “This Is My Guitar”, [8] Still Woozy’s “Rid of Me”, [9] and “Slay Bitch (Bonus Track)” on Remi Wolf’s album Big Ideas. [10]

In 2016 he produced the album Palana by Charlie Hilton of Blouse. [11] Porches' album Ricky Music was co-produced by Portrait. [12] He co-produced and recorded Someone New by Helena Deland. [13] [1] He also collaborated with Okay Kaya on her album Watch This Liquid Pour Itself . [14]

Portrait has worked with Alex G as a mixing engineer on his albums Beach Music (2015), [15] Rocket (2017), [16] [17] House of Sugar (2019), [18] [19] and God Save the Animals (2022). [20] God Save the Animals was co-produced by Portrait with Alex G. [21] He also worked as an audio engineer on Whitney's Forever Turned Around in 2019. [22]

In 2021, he worked as a producer and writer on Cloves' Nightmare on Elmfield Road. [23] Several tracks on Claud's debut album Super Monster were composed and produced by Portrait. [24] [25]

He started his career playing in multiple local bands such as the Skin Cells before he decided to pursue his own music career as a soloist. At 17, he began to record his own music and released his first album under the name Sandy in 2010. DIY self-releases on Bandcamp and began building up an audience with his label debut, DSU (2014), released on Orchid Tapes to critical acclaim from various publications. He later signed with Lucky Number, who reissued his earlier releases, Rules and Trick (2012).

It was produced by Alex G and Jacob Portrait and recorded at various studios in Philadelphia and the northeast United States. It was promoted by four singles including "Blessing" and "Runner". It received acclaim from critics, appearing on various lists of 2022's best albums, and charted on the US Billboard 200 as well as in New Zealand and Scotland.

<i>Her Loss</i> 2022 studio album by Drake and 21 Savage

Her Loss is a collaborative studio album by Canadian rapper Drake and British-American rapper 21 Savage. It was released on November 4, 2022, through OVO Sound and Republic Records. The album features a sole guest appearance from Travis Scott. Production was handled by Drake and 21 Savage's frequent collaborators Boi-1da and Metro Boomin, along with Oz, Tay Keith, Vinylz, Wheezy, Taz Taylor, and Lil Yachty, among others. <i>Britpop</i> (album) 2024 studio album by A. G. Cook

Britpop is the third studio album by English music producer A. G. Cook. The album was released on 10 May 2024 via New Alias. It arrived five months after the announcement that Cook's PC Music label would cease to release any new material. The album is split into separate discs, similar to his debut album 7G (2020), with the three discs on Britpop representing the past, present and future of Cook's artistry. The album was supported by the singles "Silver Thread Golden Needle", the title track, and "Soulbreaker".
