Jamahl Mosley (born October 6, 1978) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes and professionally for four seasons overseas.

Mosley began his coaching career in 2005 as a player development coach for the Denver Nuggets. He was promoted to assistant coach in 2007 and served in the same capacity for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks. After seven years with the Mavericks, Mosley was hired as head coach for the Orlando Magic in 2021.

Early life

Mosley was born on October 7, 1978, in Milwaukee as the second child to parents James and Deborah Mosley. [1] His parents divorced when he was 6 and he moved to San Diego with his mother and brother when he was 13. [1] Mosley attended Rancho Buena Vista High School where he was named the California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year in 1997. [1]

Playing career

Mosley played college basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes and was a third-team All-Big 12 selection in 2000. [2] He began his career in Mexico with Petroleros de Salamanca in 2001 before he joined the Victoria Titans of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) and was named the league's Best Sixth Man in 2002. [3] Mosley signed with Baloncesto León in 2003 and played there for one season. [3] [4] He split the 2004–05 season with Korihait in Finland and the Seoul Samsung Thunders in South Korea where he finished his playing career. [4] [5]

Coaching career

Mosley joined the Denver Nuggets of the NBA as a player development coach and scout in 2005. [6] He was promoted to an assistant coach in 2007. [6] Mosley worked as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010 to 2014. [6] He joined the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach in 2014. [6] Mosley became the Mavericks' defensive coordinator in 2018. [6] On April 2, 2021, he served as acting head coach after Rick Carlisle had a positive COVID-19 test and led the Mavericks to a 99–86 victory over the New York Knicks. [7]

On July 11, 2021, Mosley was named as head coach of the Orlando Magic. [8]

On March 12, 2024, Mosley agreed to a 4-year extension with the Magic. [9]

The 2011–12 NBA season was the 66th season of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which began with the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the owners of the 30 NBA teams and the NBA's players. The previous CBA, which was ratified in 2005, expired at 12:01 am EDT on July 1, 2011, resulting in a lockout. With the new deal in place, the regular season was shortened from the normal 82 games per team to 66, because of nearly two months of inactivity. This was the league's first season since 1991–92 without Shaquille O'Neal, who announced his retirement on June 1, 2011, via social media. A 4-time champion, O'Neal played 19 years for the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics. The season began on Christmas Day 2011, and ended on April 26, 2012. The playoffs started on April 28 and ended on June 21 when the Miami Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of their series, 121–106, winning the Finals, 4–1 and to capture the franchise's second NBA title. LeBron James was named both the season MVP and the NBA Finals MVP. The NBA regular season would not begin again in December until the 2020–21 NBA season.

The Cleveland Charge are an American professional basketball team in the NBA G League based in Cleveland, and are affiliated with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team plays its home games at Public Auditorium in downtown Cleveland, though to begin the 2024–25 season it will play home games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse due to renovations being made at Public Auditorium.

The 1993–94 NBA season was the Mavericks' 14th season in the National Basketball Association. After a dreadful season where they only won just eleven games, the Mavericks selected Jamal Mashburn from the University of Kentucky with the fourth overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft. Despite the addition of Mashburn, and second-year star Jim Jackson playing in his first full season, the Mavericks' misery continued under new head coach Quinn Buckner, losing 23 of their first 24 games, including a 20-game losing streak between November and December, which tied the infamous 1972–73 Philadelphia 76ers. The record was later on broken by the 1995–96 Vancouver Grizzlies and the 1997–98 Denver Nuggets, where both teams lost 23 consecutive games, which was then later broken by the 2010–11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013–14 Philadelphia 76ers, who lost 26 consecutive games. The Mavericks then suffered a 16-game losing streak on their way to a miserable 3–40 record at the end of January.

The 2014–15 NBA season was the 69th season of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA draft took place on June 26, 2014, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Andrew Wiggins was selected first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The regular season began on October 28, 2014, when the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs hosted the first game against the Dallas Mavericks at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The 2015 NBA All-Star Game was played on February 15, 2015, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with the West defeating the East 163–158. Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook won the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award. The regular season ended on April 15, 2015, and the playoffs began on April 18, 2015, and ended with the 2015 NBA Finals on June 16, 2015, after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games to win their fourth NBA title and first since 1975. The Charlotte Bobcats played their first official game as the Charlotte Hornets since 2002.

The 2021–22 Orlando Magic season was the 33rd season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This was the first season since 2018 that Steve Clifford did not coach the Magic, after agreeing to part ways on June 5. On July 11, 2021 Jamahl Mosley was hired as the new head coach. On March 12, 2022, the Magic were eliminated from playoff contention, making it the second consecutive season that they did not make the playoffs.
