Robert James Kirtley (born 10 January 1975) is a former English Test cricketer. He is a right arm fast medium bowler and a right hand batsman. After prep school at St. Andrews School,Eastbourne,he was educated at Clifton College.
Kirtley is perhaps best known for taking a spectacular catch in a One Day International against India at Lord's. Simon Hughes rated it as the fifth greatest catch of all time. [1]
His first One Day International was in 2001,as England beat Zimbabwe by 5 wickets. Whilst not batting,he did take 2-33 off 9.1 overs with the ball. This was his first 'international' encounter, although he bowled Mashonaland to victory against England on their tour of Zimbabwe in 1996/1997. Later in 2001,he received the NBC Denis Compton Award.
Kirtley has played eleven One Day Internationals. He has needed to bat on just two occasions, each time scoring 1. He has taken nine wickets, notably nabbing Virender Sehwag of India and Matthew Hayden of Australia. His best bowling figures in this form of cricket are 2-33,against Bangladesh, and he has a one-day bowling average of 53.44.
He made his Test debut in 2003 against South Africa,as England won by 70 runs. He contributed 4 with the bat over the two innings, facing 54 deliveries. He had more success bowling and took 2–80 in the first innings, off 31 overs - an economy of 2.58 and 6-34 in the second innings, off 16.2 overs. [2] He first trapped Graeme Smith lbw for 5,then Jacques Rudolph lbw for a duck, leaving the Proteas 28–2. Next,he clean bowled Neil McKenzie for 11,snaffled Andrew Hall (caught by Marcus Trescothick) for 0 and caught and bowled Paul Adams for 15. Finally,he dismissed Mark Boucher (caught by Alec Stewart) for 52,as the South Africans crumbled for 131. Finishing with match bowling figures of 8–114,Kirtley was awarded the player of the match award.
Kirtley represented England on three more occasions. After an excellent debut,he was included in the team that again faced South Africa in August 2003. He chipped in with twelve over two innings with the bat,and took 5–145 with the ball, although The Proteas ran out winners by 191 runs.
The third and fourth matches of Kirtley's four match Test career were against Sri Lanka in December 2003. The first game was drawn, with Kirtley taking 2-109 and 2-62,and hitting 3 not out in the first innings. The second encounter was won comprehensively by Sri Lanka,by an innings and 215 runs. England batted first and scored 265,with Kirtley scoring 1. In their reply, the Sri Lankans amassed 628,with all bowlers struggling. Ashley Giles took two wickets at the cost of 190 runs and Gareth Batty conceded 137 with no reward, making Kirtley's return of 2-131 look distinctly presentable. In their reply,England were dismissed for 148. Despite this batting failure by the team,Kirtley hit 12,his best ever score in a Test, off 25 deliveries, including a six, before being bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan.
He bowled the first ever t20 ball, against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Kirtley was a surprising selection in the England squad for the 2007 World Twenty20 in South Africa,he was named alongside other specialists Darren Maddy, leg spinner Chris Schofield and veteran off spinner and former spin coach Jeremy Snape. [3] Kirtley played one (wicketless) match against Australia.
At his best,he was a skiddy bowler with good accuracy, and an excellent cricketing brain. At his worst,he was banned from bowling because of doubts about his action.
In the 2006 C&G Trophy final,Kirtley bowled Sussex to a seemingly improbable victory with match figures of 5-27. (These 5 wickets were notable for all being LBWs). On taking the final, winning wicket,Kirtley was mobbed in celebration on the pitch by his teammates.
His last match for Sussex before retiring from professional cricket after a sixteen-year career, was a Pro 40 one day match against Surrey on Saturday 4 September 2010 at Hove. His final victim was England batsman Kevin Pietersen as the match ended in a tie. Kirtley's figures were 3-61.

James Michael Anderson is an English international cricketer who plays for the England Test cricket team, and previously played for England's limited overs cricket teams. The Bangladeshi cricket team toured Sri Lanka for three One Day International cricket matches and two Test cricket matches in August and September 2005. The Bangladeshi team was coming off a moderately successful tour of England,as they had pushed Australia close in one ODI and beat them in another. However, they had still lost five out of six matches in the NatWest Series, both of the Test matches, and remained at the bottom of both the ICC Test Championship and ICC ODI Championship. The hosts Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were undefeated in home ODI tournaments since February 2004,and in home Test series since March 2004,both against top-ranked Australia. Their win in the Indian Oil Cup a month before this series saw them into second place in the ODI Championship, but they are only ranked sixth in Tests.
Ottis Delroy Gibson is a Barbadian cricket coach and former cricketer who played for the West Indies cricket team. From 2010 to 2014,Gibson was the head coach for the West Indies, where he led the team to be champions of the 2012 T20 World Cup. He has been appointed as Bangladesh bowling head coach and previously twice worked as bowling coach for England, from 2007 to 2010 and again from 2015 to 2017. The South African cricket team toured Australia for cricket matches during the 2005–06 season. South Africa had already played two One Day International series during this season, beating New Zealand 4–0 at home before travelling to India and drawing the series there 2–2. The team had been playing 14 successive ODIs before arriving in Australia, with their last Test match against West Indies in April and May 2005. South Africa played one first class warm-up match, one three-day warm-up match without first class status, and one one-day match before they embarked on the three-Test series, which began on 16 December and ended on 6 January. They also participated in the 2005–06 VB Series,a three-team one-day tournament, along with Australia and Sri Lanka, where they finished last.
Graeme Peter Swann is an English former cricketer who played all three formats of the game. Born in Northampton,he attended Sponne School in Towcester,Northamptonshire. He was primarily a right-arm off-spinner,and also a capable late-order batsman with four first-class centuries, and often fielded at second slip. Swann could score quickly;his test strike rate is the highest of any male English batter to have scored at least 1000 runs. Swann was a member of the England team that won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.
Stuart Christopher John Broad,is an English cricketer who plays Test cricket for the England cricket team and a former One Day and Twenty 20 International captain. Broad was a member of the England team that won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.
Sri Lanka toured England for cricket matches during the 2006 international cricket season. England were back home for the first time since September and looked to maintain their Test standards, which saw them keep their second place in the ICC Test Championship in India, and the teams were also competing for sixth place in the ICC ODI Championship as both England and Sri Lanka were coming off the back of two lost ODI tours on the Asian sub-continent,against India and Pakistan respectively. To add to problems, both teams were likely to be missing some key members of the team as England were without some of their squad for their previous tour and,two days before Sri Lanka departed for England,it was revealed that skipper Marvan Atapattu would stay at home for the tour due to back problems that had forced him to skip his previous tour too. Jehan Mubarak was brought in as his replacement.
Sulieman Jamaal Benn is a West Indian cricketer who plays international cricket for the West Indies and first-class cricket for Barbados. Benn was a member of the West Indies team that won the 2016 T20 World Cup.
The England cricket team toured Sri Lanka from 28 September to 22 December 2007. England made two trips to Sri Lanka in this tour with the ODI team arriving on 25 September before returning to England on 15 October. The Test team arrived on 15 November and stayed there for the remainder of the tour. The tour included three Test matches and five ODIs.
In cricket,a hat-trick occurs when a bowler takes three wickets with consecutive deliveries. The deliveries may be interrupted by an over bowled by another bowler from the other end of the pitch or the other team's innings, but must be three consecutive deliveries by the individual bowler in the same match. Only wickets attributed to the bowler count towards a hat-trick;run outs do not count, although they can contribute towards a so-called team hat-trick,which is ostensibly a normal hat-trick except that the three successive deliveries can be wickets from any bowler in the team and with any mode of dismissal.
