George Habib Antonius,CBE (hon.) was a Lebanese author and diplomat who settled in Jerusalem. He was one of the first historians of Arab nationalism. Born in Deir al Qamar to a Lebanese Eastern Orthodox Christian family,he served as a civil servant in the British Mandate of Palestine. His 1938 book The Arab Awakening generated an ongoing debate over such issues as the origins of Arab nationalism,the significance of the Arab Revolt of 1916,and the machinations behind the post-World War I political settlement in West Asia and North Africa.

The People's Party was a Syrian political party that dominated Syrian politics during the 1950s and the early 1960s. The party was officially founded in August 1948 by Rushdi al-Kikhiya,Nazem al-Qudsi and Mustafa bey Barmada. It saw its greatest levels of support among Aleppo merchants,bankers and those in agriculture in surrounding areas. The Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party –Syria Region,officially the Syrian Regional Branch,is a neo-Ba'athist organisation founded on 7 April 1947 by Michel Aflaq,Salah al-Din al-Bitar and followers of Zaki al-Arsuzi. The party has ruled Syria continuously since the 1963 Syrian coup d'état which brought the Ba'athists to power. It was first the regional branch of the original Ba'ath Party (1947–1966) before it changed its allegiance to the Syrian-dominated Ba'ath movement (1966–present) following the 1966 split within the original Ba'ath Party. Since their ascent to power in 1963,neo-Ba'athist officers proceeded by stamping out the traditional civilian elites to construct a military dictatorship operating in totalitarian lines;wherein all state agencies,party organisations,public institutions,civil entities,media and health infrastructure are tightly dominated by the army establishment and the Mukhabarat.
The 1920 capture of Damascus was the final stage of the Franco-Syrian War,when French forces captured Damascus with little resistance. The Kingdom of Syria was brought to an end and the French mandate of Syria was put into effect. Shortly after,in September 1920,Damascus was established as the capital of the State of Damascus under French Mandate.
David Warren Lesch is a lecturer,author and commentator on Middle East history and politics. He is the Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor of Middle East History at Trinity University in San Antonio,Texas. Lesch writes regularly for news publications and journals and has made frequent appearances on radio and television to discuss Middle East politics,with a particular focus on Syria. In 2012–2013,he co-founded,organized,and led the Harvard-NUPI-Trinity Syria Research Project alongside William Ury. The project was funded by the governments of Norway and Switzerland,and its Final Report was published by NUPI in 2013. He co-founded what in essence is the 2nd phase of this project in early 2014,along with Gerard McHugh,the founder and president of Conflict Dynamics International (CDI),based in Cambridge,MA. This 2nd phase is entitled the CDI-Trinity University Syria Initiative,and it is ongoing and funded by the government of Denmark. Both Syria projects have attempted to offer a better multi-dimensional understanding of the Syrian civil war as well as chart out possible pathways toward conflict resolution and sustainable governance. Dr. Lesch was also the number one draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1980 baseball winter draft as a pitcher.
Kafr Takharim is a town in northwestern Syria,administratively part of the Idlib Governorate,located in the north of Idlib. Nearby localities include Harem to the north,Salqin to the northwest,Abu Talha to the west and Armanaz to the south. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics,Kafr Takharim had a population of 10,084 in the 2004 census. The town is also the administrative center of the Kafr Takharim nahiyah which consists of nine villages with a combined population of 14,772. Its inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims.
Arab nationalism is a political ideology asserting that Arabs constitute a single nation. As a traditional nationalist ideology,it promotes Arab culture and civilization,celebrates Arab history,glorifies the Arabic language as well as Arabic literature,and calls for the rejuvenation of Arab society through total unification. It bases itself on the premise that the people of the Arab world —from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Sea —constitute one nation bound together by a common identity:ethnicity,language,culture,history,geography,and politics.
Pan-Arabism is an ideology that espouses the unification of all Arab people in a single nation-state,comprising the Arab countries of West Asia and North Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Sea,which is referred to as the Arab world. It is closely connected to Arab nationalism,which asserts the view that the Arabs constitute a single nation. It originated in the late 19th century among the Arab regions of the Ottoman Empire,and its popularity reached its height during the 1950s and 1960s. Advocates of pan-Arabism have often espoused Arab socialist principles and strongly opposed Western political involvement in the Arab world. It also sought to empower Arab states against outside forces by forming alliances and,to a lesser extent,economic co-operation.

Palestinian nationalism is the national movement of the Palestinian people that espouses self-determination and sovereignty over the region of Palestine. Arab identity is the objective or subjective state of perceiving oneself as an Arab and as relating to being Arab. Like other cultural identities,it relies on a common culture,a traditional lineage,the common land in history,shared experiences including underlying conflicts and confrontations. These commonalities are regional and in historical contexts,tribal. Arab identity is defined independently of religious identity,and pre-dates the spread of Islam and before spread of Judaism and Christianity,with historically attested Arab Muslim tribes and Arab Christian tribes and Arab Jewish tribes. Arabs are a diverse group in terms of religious affiliations and practices. Most Arabs are Muslim,with a minority adhering to other faiths,largely Christianity,but also Druze and Baháʼí.
