James R. Rasband (born March 20, 1963) is an American academic and religious leader who has been a general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since April 2019. [1] He was previously the Academic Vice President (AVP) at Brigham Young University (BYU) from June 2017 until shortly after he was called as a general authority. [2] He also previously served as dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School (JRCLS). He has also been the Hugh W. Colton Professor of Law. [3]

Rasband received a bachelor's degree from BYU (1986) and later graduated from Harvard Law School (1989), where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review . [4]

Following law school, Rasband clerked for Judge J. Clifford Wallace of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. [5] He then worked as a lawyer in Seattle for the Perkins Coie law firm. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the JRCLS. He has been a visiting professor in Australia at the University of Queensland and Murdoch University. Rasband is a specialist in public land law and natural resources law. [6]

From 2004 to 2008, Rasband served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the JRCLS. In 2008 and 2009, he was BYU's Associate AVP for Faculty. Rasband served as dean of the JRCLS from 2009 to 2016. [7] [8]

Rasband was succeeded as BYU's AVP by C. Shane Reese. [9]

LDS Church service

As a young man, Rasband was a full-time missionary in the church's Seoul Korea Mission. He served in the church as president of the Provo Utah YSA 8th Stake from 2011 to 2016. [10] In April 2017, he was called as an area seventy. [11] Rasband was sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 6, 2019, at age 56. [1] Since August 2020, Rasband has been serving as a counselor in the presidency of the church's Asia North Area. [12] [13]

Personal life

Rasband and his wife, Mary Williams, are the parents of four children. [14]

Merrill Joseph Bateman has been a general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1992, originally as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy. He is currently an emeritus general authority. From 2003 to 2007, Bateman was a member of the church's Presidency of the Seventy. He was president of Brigham Young University (BYU) from January 1, 1996, until May 1, 2003, and was the church's twelfth presiding bishop in 1994 and 1995. In 2003 and 2004, Bateman was the general president of the church's Sunday School organization. From 2007 to 2010, Bateman was president of the Provo Utah Temple.

He was serving as the sixteenth president of Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU–Idaho) when he was appointed inaugural president of BYU–PW. Previously, Gilbert served as president and CEO of both the Deseret News and Deseret Digital Media, having also served as an executive vice president of Deseret Management Corporation, a professor at Harvard Business School (HBS), and as an associate academic vice president at BYU–Idaho.

H. Reese Hansen is an American legal academic. He is the longest serving dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University having served as dean from 1989 until 2004.

James D. Gordon III is an American legal academic who has also held administrative positions at Brigham Young University (BYU).
