Janja is a town in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is known as a place where the confluence of the rivers Janja and Drina is situated. It is the only Bosniak community in the municipality and consists of many displaced persons from other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Janja is a small town near Bijeljina in northeast Bosnia, located on the major road between Bijeljina and Zvornik. Located in the center of Janja is the Atik Mosque. Janja has three mosques which have been rebuilt after the war.[ citation needed ]
There is no exact accurate source of when Janja was founded. From 1878 to 1961, Janja was municipality center. The 1991 census showed Janja had a population of 10,458. Part of Janja lies on the opposite side of the Drina River from the rest of the municipality.
In 1971 Janja had a population of 7,945. [2]

The Višegrad massacres were acts of mass murder committed against the Bosniak civilian population of the town and municipality of Višegrad during the ethnic cleansing of eastern Bosnia by Republika Srpska police and military forces during the spring and summer of 1992, at the start of the Bosnian War.

The Bijeljina massacre involved the killing of civilians by Serb paramilitary groups in Bijeljina on 1–2 April 1992 in the run-up to the Bosnian War. The majority of those killed were Bosniaks. Members of other ethnicities were also killed, such as Serbs deemed disloyal by the local authorities. The killings were committed by a local paramilitary group known as Mirko's Chetniks and by the Serb Volunteer Guard, a Serbia-based paramilitary group led by Željko "Arkan" Ražnatović. The SDG were under the command of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), which was controlled by Serbian President Slobodan Milošević.
The Zvornik massacre refers to acts of mass murder and violence committed against Bosniaks and other non-Serb civilians in Zvornik by Serb paramilitary groups at the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992. It was part of a wider campaign of ethnic cleansing in the Bosnian War: by one estimate, 40,000 Bosniaks were expelled from the Zvornik district.
