Melvin Eugene Carnahan was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 51st Governor of Missouri from 1993 until his death in 2000. A Democrat,he held various positions,including stints as a state Representative,where he rose to the position of majority leader,as State Treasurer and as Lieutenant Governor. He was elected Governor of Missouri in 1992 and re-elected in 1996. In 2000,he ran for the U.S. Senate against incumbent John Ashcroft in a hotly contested race. During the final weeks of the campaign,Carnahan was killed in a plane crash on his way to a campaign event. However,he was elected posthumously to the U.S. Senate,and his widow,Jean,served in his stead for one year until a special election was held.
