Jay Frye (born February 18, 1965) is an American motorsports executive. He currently serves as the president of IndyCar. Frye previously was Team Director for two NASCAR teams, MB2 Motorsports and Red Bull Racing Team.
Frye was born in Rock Island, Illinois to parents Jerry and Joyce. He has one sister, Julia, four years younger than him. [1]
As a child, Frye's family owned a garbage trucking company. [2] Frye attended the University of Missouri on a football scholarship and played tight end and offensive tackle on the football team. [2]
After graduating, Frye was employed at Anheuser-Busch as a special-event manager in Chicago. [2]
In late 1991, Frye went to work for Valvoline, as running their motorsports sponsorship program for NASCAR and the World of Outlaws. [2] Working with driver Mark Martin and Roush Racing, the Valvoline sponsorship received the most television exposure according to sponsor reports. [1] He also was instrumental in establishing a relationship between Valvoline and Hendrick Motorsports. [2]
When the Mars Company approached Hendrick Motorsports about sponsoring a new team, owner Rick Hendrick was uninterested in expansion, but suggested Mars contact Frye about establishing a team. Setting up an ownership group consisting of Read Morton, Tom Beard, and Nelson Bowers, Frye served as General Manager of the team.
In the Skittles racing team's first season of existence in 1997, driver Derrike Cope finished 27th in the final points standings. [3]
In 1998, 15-time race winner Ernie Irvan took over as driver for the team. Irvan won three pole positions, including the Brickyard 400. Irvan retired after sustaining a concussion in August 1999. Between 2000 and 2002, Ken Schrader drove the #36 M&M's car.
In August 2000, Frye oversaw MB2 purchasing Tyler Jet Motorsports and expanding to two teams with driver Johnny Benson Jr. Frye attracted Valvoline to sponsor the team. In October 2002, Benson won at Rockingham Speedway to earn the team's first NASCAR Cup Series victory.
In July 2006, real-estate developer Bobby Ginn purchased 80% of the team, with Frye owning 20%, and the team was renamed Ginn Racing. [4] [5] Amid financial troubles, on July 25, 2007, Ginn Racing announced it had merged with Dale Earnhardt, Inc., effectively ending the team's existence. [6]
In late 2007, Frye went to work for Red Bull Racing Team as they began to establish a NASCAR presence. Before Frye arrived, the team struggled severely with drivers A. J. Allmendinger and Brian Vickers. Allmendinger's team had a forty-third-place finish in the final owners' standings and had 19 DNQ's. [7] Vickers failed to qualify for 13 races and ended the season with a 38th owners' standings position. [7]
Under Frye's leadership, Vickers improved to finish 19th in points in 2008. Frye was named NASCAR Executive of the Year by ESPN and the Kansas City Star. [8] In 2009, Vickers scored the first Cup Series win for the team at Michigan International Speedway and made the NASCAR playoffs, finishing 12th in points. For the 2011 season, Kasey Kahne became a full-time driver for the team, driving car No. 4 (formerly No. 82), [9] [10] and Vickers returned to drive the No. 83 car. [11] On June 20, 2011, the Associated Press reported that Red Bull was planning to leave NASCAR at the end of the season. The team's on-track struggles, combined with a lackluster outreach to the 18–34 demographic, forced their departure. [12] Despite this, Kahne scored the team's final victory at the November race at Phoenix, while Vickers struggled for most of the year, resulting in a 25th-place points finish. [13] Kahne finished the season in 14th. [13]
For 2012, Frye joined Hendrick Motorsports as an executive on business development. [14]
In November 2015, Frye was named as IndyCar President of competition and operations. [15] In December 2018, he was promoted to President of IndyCar. [16] Under his leadership, Frye oversaw the elimination of manufacture-specific aerokits in 2018, the introduction of a driver-protecting aeroscreen in 2020, and the introduction of hybrid technology in 2024. Frye is married to his wife, Danielle. Danielle has an extensive background in motorsports, having worked as a publicist for Bill Elliott and Dale Jarrett in the 1990s. She currently serves as director of USAC's quarter-midget circuit, which partnered with NASCAR to create the NASCAR Youth Series. The couple has two daughters. [19]
Kasey Kenneth Kahne is an American dirt track racing driver and former professional stock car racing driver. He last competed in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2018, driving the No. 95 Dumont Jets/Procore Technologies Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Leavine Family Racing. Currently, Kahne competes in the High Limit Racing series, driving the No. 9 sprint car for his own team, Kasey Kahne Racing.
Special paint schemes are one-time or limited time variations on a race car's typical appearance. Their use has historically been largely confined to NASCAR stock car racing, partially due to the much larger surface area of a stock car, and longer season, but have entered the IndyCar in a limited fashion. NASCAR's increased media coverage has contributed to their popularity with both fans and sponsors.
Jerry Anthony Nadeau is an American former stock car racer. He competed in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. He started racing go-karts before moving up to car racing, driving in the 12 Hours of Sebring, the European Formula Ford Festival, and the Barber Dodge Pro Series. Nadeau arrived in NASCAR, the highest and most expensive level of stock car racing in the United States, with a limited budget. He started racing part-time in NASCAR and finished sixth in the 1996 Formula Opel Euro Series.
Casey James Mears is an American professional off-road and stock car racing driver. He has raced in IndyCar, NASCAR's three national series including 15 seasons in the Cup Series, SCORE International, and the Stadium Super Trucks. A former winner of the Coca-Cola 600, Mears is a member of the Mears racing family as the nephew of four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears and the son of IndyCar and off-road veteran Roger Mears. He also works as a NASCAR analyst for Fox Sports 1.
Joseph Frank Nemechek III is an American professional stock car racing driver who last competed part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 24 Toyota Supra for Sam Hunt Racing. Nemechek has made the second most national series starts in NASCAR history. He claimed the record in 2019 after he passed seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty, but was surpassed by Kevin Harvick in 2021. Nemechek won the 1992 NASCAR Busch Series championship.

MB2 Motorsports was a NASCAR Cup Series team based in Mooresville, North Carolina, near the sport's hub in Charlotte. The team was founded by Read Morton, Tom Beard, and Nelson Bowers, from which the original team name derived. Bowers was the longest tenured of the original owners, and the listed owner of the teams' entries when resort and real-estate developer Bobby Ginn bought out the team in 2007, renaming it to Ginn Racing for that season only. The Valvoline corporation co-owned the No. 10 car with the principal owners from 2001 to 2005 as MBV Motorsports, while the No. 36 entry was co-owned by Centrix Financial, LLC owner Robert Sutton as MB Sutton Motorsports in 2005.
Evernham Motorsports was an American professional stock car racing organization that competed in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team was founded in 2000 by former Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Ray Evernham, entering full-time competition as a two-car operation in 2001 and fielding additional full-time entries in alliances with Ultra Motorsports and the Valvoline corporation. The organization was renamed Gillett Evernham Motorsports in 2007 after former Montreal Canadiens and Liverpool F.C. owner George Gillett bought a controlling interest from founder Evernham, and merged with Petty Enterprises in 2009 to become Richard Petty Motorsports.
Red Bull Racing Team, also known as Team Red Bull, was a NASCAR team owned by Red Bull founders Dietrich Mateschitz and Chaleo Yoovidhya. The team was based in Mooresville, North Carolina in the United States and was managed by Jay Frye. The team suspended operations on December 8, 2011 and their cars were sold to BK Racing.

Brian Lee Vickers is an American professional stock car and sports car racing driver. He last drove the No. 14 Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing as an interim driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the injured Tony Stewart. He won the 2003 NASCAR Busch Series championship driving for Hendrick Motorsports. Vickers was also among the first series of full-time drivers for Toyota after the manufacturer first entered the Sprint Cup Series.
Kenneth Francis is an American NASCAR crew chief. He began his racing career at the age of eight, racing go-karts. He continued to drive the race car until 1996 when he began working on engines for Butch Mock Motorsports. Six years later, Francis became a crew chief for the first time while he was employed at Robert Yates Racing. He is currently employed at Hendrick Motorsports as the Vehicle Technical Director organization-wide.
Keith Matthew Rodden is an American stock car racing crew chief who works for Richard Childress Racing in an administrative role. He previously served as a crew chief for RCR on Austin Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the NASCAR Cup Series. He also previously crew chiefed in the Cup Series for Chip Ganassi Racing on Jamie McMurray's No. 1 car in 2014 and then for Hendrick Motorsports on Kasey Kahne's No. 5 car from 2015 to 2017 and also worked for Chevrolet in their motorsports division.

Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) is a museum in Mooresville, North Carolina. Formerly a race team founded by Dale Earnhardt and his wife, Teresa Earnhardt, it competed in the NASCAR Cup Series, the highest level of competition for professional stock car racing in the United States, from 1998 to 2009. Earnhardt was a seven-time Winston Cup champion who died in a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Despite his ownership of the DEI racing team, Earnhardt never drove for his team in the Winston Cup; instead, he raced for his long-time mentor and backer Richard Childress at RCR. In the late-2000s, DEI suffered critical financial difficulties after drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip, and sponsors Anheuser-Busch, National Automotive Parts Association and United States Army left the team; DEI consequently merged with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2009, moving their equipment into the latter's shop, while the former's closed down. Chip Ganassi Racing's NASCAR operations was subsequently purchased by Trackhouse Racing Team in 2021.
Peter J. Sospenzo is an American professional stock car racing driver and crew chief who works for Spire Motorsports on their Next Gen car implementation. He previously competed in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series as a driver.
