Jayanta Debnath (born 1971) is an American physician who specializes in pathology. His research focuses on autophagy as it relates to cancer. He is the chair of the University of California, San Francisco department of pathology and a co-editor of the Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease .
Jayanta Debnath was born in 1971 in North Carolina [1] where his father Lokenath Debnath was a professor of mathematics at East Carolina University. [2] [3] Debnath attended Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He then attended Harvard Medical School for his Doctor of Medicine, graduating in 1998. From 1998 to 2003 he completed his internship, medical residency, and fellowship in pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. [4]
From 2003 to 2005 he was an instructor of cell biology at Harvard Medical School. In 2005, he joined the faculty of University of California, San Francisco as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 2011 and full professor in 2016. [4] In 2018, he was appointed the chair of UCSF's pathology department, succeeding Abul K. Abbas. [5] In 2021 he was one of the six researchers at UCSF to jointly win the Endeavor Award from the Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, which is a US$3 million research grant to study metastasis of cancer. [6] Debnath's research focuses on the cellular process of autophagy and its relevance to cancer, specifically breast cancer. He formerly served as the chair of the integration panel for the United States Department of Defense's Breast Cancer Research Program. [5] As of 2021, he is a co-editor of the Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease . [7] He has also served as an associate editor of the journal Autophagy . [5]

Marilyn Gist Farquhar was a pathologist and cellular biologist, Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Pathology, as well as the chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, who previously worked at Yale University from 1973 to 1990. She has won the E. B. Wilson Medal and the FASEB Excellence in Science Award. She was married to Nobel Laureate George Emil Palade from 1970 to his death in 2008. Her research focuses on control of intracellular membrane traffic and the molecular pathogenesis of auto immune kidney diseases. She has yielded a number of discoveries in basic biomedical research including: mechanisms of kidney disease, organization of functions that attach cells to one another, and mechanisms of secretions.
Yuet Wai Kan, is an Chinese-American geneticist and hematologist. He is the current Louis K. Diamond Chair in Hematology and a Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a former president of the American Society of Hematology.
The Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes an annual volume of review articles relevant to pathology. It was established in 2006 and is published by Annual Reviews. Its co-editors have been Jon C. Aster, Mel B. Feany, and Jayanta Debnath since 2021. As of 2021, Journal Citation Reports gives the journal a 2020 impact factor of 23.472, ranking it first of 77 journal titles in the category "Pathology".
The Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research is given annually by Johnson & Johnson to honor the work of an active scientist in academia, industry or a scientific institute in the field of biomedical research. It was established in 2004 and perpetuates the memory of Paul Janssen, the founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary.
Sue Desmond-Hellmann is an American oncologist and biotechnology leader who served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2014–2020. He is currently the President of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, San Francisco, a multidisciplinary research and clinical care organisation that is one of the largest cancer centres in the Western United States. He was previously CEO of the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London.
Diane L. Barber, from Marin County, California, is an American cell physiologist and cell biologist. She is professor and chair of the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology at University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. In 2012 she became elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science as recognition for her "distinguished contributions on cell signaling by plasma membrane ion transport proteins and on the design and function of proteins regulated by intracellular pH dynamics."
Zena Werb was a professor and the Vice Chair of Anatomy at the University of California, San Francisco. She was also the co-leader of the Cancer, Immunity, and Microenvironment Program at the Hellen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the Executive Committee of the Sabre-Sandler Asthma Basic Research Center at UCSF. Her research focused on features of the microenvironment surrounding cells, with particular interest in the extracellular matrix and the role of its protease enzymes in cell signaling.
Jeffrey A. Bluestone is the A.W. and Mary Margaret Clausen Distinguished Professor of Metabolism and Endocrinology and the director of the Hormone Research Institute in the Diabetes Center at the University of California, San Francisco, and was, for a number of years, an earlier executive vice chancellor and provost of that university. He began the UCSF affiliation in 2000, after earlier extended positions at the NCI-NIH, and at The University of Chicago. Bluestone earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in microbiology from Rutgers State University, and his doctoral degree in immunology from Cornell Graduate School of Medical Science. His current research is focused on understanding T cell activation and immune tolerance in autoimmunity and organ transplantation. As of April 2016, he was also serving as the president and CEO of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, or simply Biohub, is a nonprofit research organization. In addition to supporting and conducting original research, CZ Biohub acts as a hub and fosters science collaboration between UC Berkeley, UCSF and Stanford. The Biohub’s medical science research center is funded by a $600 million commitment from Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. It is currently co-led by Stephen Quake and Joseph DeRisi. Gajus Worthington was named as Biohub's Chief Operating Officer in 2017 and Sandra Schmid joined as Chief Scientific Officer in 2020.
Abul K. Abbas is an American pathologist at University of California San Francisco where he is Distinguished Professor in Pathology and former chair of its Department of Pathology. He is senior editor of the pathology reference book Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease along with Vinay Kumar, as well as Basic Immunology, and Cellular & Molecular Immunology. He was editor for Immunity from 1993-1996, and continues to serve as a member of the Editorial Board. He was one of the inaugural co-editors of the Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease for issues from 2006-2020. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers.
