Jeff Lutz is a retired American artistic gymnast. He was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team and won a silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games.
Lutz called Fort Worth, Texas home and he competed in gymnastics at an early age for Gyros. [2] He attended Richland High School in nearby North Richland Hills. [3] He competed for the school's gymnastics team for one season as a sophomore and led the team to the Texas state title. [2] [3] He quit high school gymnastics when he was selected for the junior national gymnastics team and to train more difficult compulsory routines. [2] [3] He was considered one of the best youth gymnasts in the nation and after he graduated from Richland in 1986, he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma to pursue gymnastics. [4] [5] [2]
While a student at Oklahoma, Lutz was an Oklahoma Sooners men's gymnastics team member. He competed on the team for the 1987, 1988, and 1991 teams culminating in winning the 1991 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships. [6] He graduated from Oklahoma in 1992 with a political science degree. [2]
In 1991, Lutz was chosen to represent the United States at the 1991 Pan American Games. He received a silver medal as the team placed second in the team all-around.
Lutz retired in 1992 for around one year before returning to gymnastics competition in October 1993. [7] He retired from competition in 1994. [2]
After his competitive career, Lutz stayed involved with gymnastics. He opened Gym Express, a gymnastics facility that was located in Auburn, Washington, in 1997. [2] [8] It remained under their control until they sold the gym in 2007. [8] They then purchased PSSG in 2007, renamed it Puget Sound Gymnastics, and later sold it in 2010. [8]
In June 2005, Lutz was named assistant coach for the Washington Huskies women's gymnastics team. [9] He was in the role for one season and did not return after head coach Bob Levesque's retirement in 2006 and the subsequent hire of Joanne Bowers to lead Washington gymnastics.
In August 2012, he was named as the general manager of Axis Gymnastics in Jackson, Wyoming. [10]
Lutz married fellow Oklahoma gymnast Linda Haverly in 1995. [2] They later divorced. [11]
The Fort Worth Cavalry was an Arena Football League team which operated for a single season, 1994, in the National Conference. The league did not want to abandon the idea of having a franchise in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, a major media market, after the demise of the Dallas Texans (1990–1993), and granted a new franchise to an ownership group in Fort Worth. The team was owned by Peter "Woody" Kern and led by head coach Michael Trigg. The team struggled with ticket sales and financial issues lead to the team being folded after the 1994 season.
Béla Károlyi was a Romanian and American gymnastics coach of Hungarian origin. Early in his coaching career he developed the Romanian centralized training system for gymnastics. One of his earliest protégés was Nadia Comăneci, the first Olympic Games gymnast to be awarded a perfect score. Living under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu, Károlyi frequently clashed with Romanian officials. He and his wife defected to the United States in 1981.
Shannon Lee Miller is an American former artistic gymnast. She was the 1993 and 1994 world all-around champion, the 1992 Summer Olympics all-around silver medallist, the 1996 Olympic balance beam champion, the 1995 Pan American Games all-around champion, and a member of the gold medal-winning Magnificent Seven team at the 1996 Olympics.
Valeri Viktorovich Liukin is a Kazakh-American retired artistic gymnast currently working as a gymnastics coach. Representing the former Soviet Union, Liukin was the 1988 Olympic champion in the team competition and individually on the horizontal bar, and Olympic silver medalist in the all-around and the parallel bars.

Robert Hughes Sr. was an American high school basketball coach. Hughes was the United States' all-time winningest high school basketball coach from February 11, 2003, to December 7, 2010, and as of June 2024, is the most successful boys' high school basketball coach in the United States with 1,333 wins. He was passed in wins by Leta Andrews of Granbury High School in Granbury, Texas, who compiled a national record 1,416 career victories in girls' high school basketball before retiring in 2014.
Ivan Ivankov is a retired Belarusian artistic gymnast. Ivankov; a very big name in the gymnastics world, which he earned throughout years of competition and hard work. The 1994 and 1997 all-around World Champion, and the 1994 and 1996 all-around European Champion, Ivankov has competed for over a decade on the international circuit. Despite his numerous achievements at the World Championships, Europeans and other events, Ivankov has suffered a string of misfortunes at the Olympics, and has never won an Olympic medal. He had to share a third place with another competitor, after which, the bronze Olympic medal wasn’t given to him.
Cristina Bontaş is a Romanian former artistic gymnast, who competed in international events between 1987 and 1993. Her best events were the floor exercise, the vault, and the all around. She is a world champion on floor, a double olympic medalist and a six-time world medalist. Bontaş scored a perfect ten on floor in the all around event of the 1989 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Liang Chow is a Chinese-American former artistic gymnast. He is the founder, owner, and head coach of Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa. He is notable for being the coach of 2008 Olympic balance beam champion Shawn Johnson and 2012 Olympic individual all-around champion Gabby Douglas. He coached senior US gymnasts Norah Flatley and Rachel Gowey and junior US gymnast Victoria Nguyen.
Elvira Fuadovna Saadi is a retired gymnast from the former Soviet Union and a former elite gymnastics coach in Canada.
Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas is an American artistic gymnast. She is the 2012 Olympic all-around champion and the 2015 World all-around silver medalist. She was a member of the gold-winning teams at both the 2012 and the 2016 Summer Olympics, dubbed the "Fierce Five" and the "Final Five" by the media, respectively. She was a member of the gold-winning American teams at the 2011 and the 2015 World Championships. She was also the 2012 U.S. champion on uneven bars. Additionally, she was the 2016 American Cup all-around champion.
Jacob William Dalton is a retired American gymnast who was a member of the Oklahoma Sooners men's gymnastics team and the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team. He represented the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Christopher Dean Brooks is a retired American gymnast who represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He is now assistant coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks NCAA gymnastics team. He was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team and won four gold medals at the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships. He has trained alongside Olympic and World Championships medalist Jonathan Horton as a junior, college, and senior elite gymnast. On August 17, 2017, he announced his retirement from artistic gymnastics.
Carol Michelle "Chelle" Stack is a former gymnast. She competed for the United States national team at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. She is currently active as a brevet rated judge at US national gymnastics competitions.
John Gerald Geddert was an American artistic gymnastics coach, who was a head coach of the gold-medal 2012 U.S. women's Olympic team and regular coach of team member Jordyn Wieber. He retired when suspended by USA Gymnastics in 2018 after being implicated in the USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal centered on his long-time associate Larry Nassar. Geddert committed suicide in 2021, shortly after being charged with 24 criminal charges, including 20 counts of human trafficking of a minor, one count each of first-degree criminal sexual assault, second-degree criminal sexual assault involving a minor, and lying to a police officer.
The 2016 NCAA women's gymnastics tournament were held April 15–16, 2016, at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The 2016 edition marks the second consecutive time the Championship has been held in Fort Worth; this only the second time it has been held in the state of Texas. Following the 2016 championship, Fort Worth would be where the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship is held in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The team competition was won by Oklahoma with a score 197.675.
Monica Goermann is a Canadian former gymnast and gymnastics coach. She is also the owner, artistic director, and choreographer of Monica's Danz Gym. She was named to the 1980 Canadian Olympic team, although the team did not compete due to Canada's decision to boycott the Olympics in Moscow.
Danna Durante is an American gymnastics coach who served as the head coach of the University of Georgia Gym Dogs gymnastics program from 2012 to 2017. Prior to her head coaching appointment at Georgia, Durante has been involved with three other school teams. Her largest role was the role of head coach of the University of California, Berkeley Golden Bears gymnastics team for the 2012 season. However, a large proportion of her coaching career has been spent at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, coaching the Nebraska Cornhuskers women's gymnastics team. She joined the Cornhuskers in 2003 as an assistant coach and remained with the team for eight seasons, serving as an associate head coach for the latter three. Her first college coaching appointment came in 1998 when she was hired as an assistant for the University of Washington and the Washington Huskies gymnastics program.
Al Fong is an American gymnastics coach and owner of GAGE Center, a gymnastics club. Fong coached Julissa Gomez and Christy Henrich, Olympic hopefuls for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, who died after a competition accident and from anorexia, respectively. He has since coached two Olympic silver medalists: Terin Humphrey and Courtney McCool.
Dianne Patrice Durham was an American artistic gymnast. In 1983, she won the all-around senior title at the women's US National Championships, becoming the first African American athlete to do so. She was Béla and Márta Károlyi's first elite athlete in the United States, helping establish their coaching credentials outside of the state-sponsored program of their native Romania, and trained with Mary Lou Retton, who called Durham her "best competition". After injuries and competition stipulations prevented her from competing in the 1984 Summer Olympics, Durham retired from competition in 1985. She later ran the Skyline Gymnastics school in Chicago.
