Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals Inc, branded as Jefferson Health, is a multi-state non-profit health system whose flagship hospital is Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City Philadelphia. The health system's hospitals serve as the teaching hospitals of Thomas Jefferson University. Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health are integrated together as two arms of the same organization. It has a single board of directors [1] and produces joint financial statements. [2] The CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health is Joseph G. Cacchione, MD.

History

Formerly a division of Thomas Jefferson University, the hospital was separated from the university to become a founding member of the Jefferson Health system in 1995. The Hospital merged with Methodist Hospital as a division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in 1996. [3] In March 2014, the Jefferson Health System was dissolved. [4] In July 2016, Aria Health and Jefferson Health System announced an official merger. [5]

For fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals had 937 licensed beds, 41,368 admissions, 1,350,317 outpatient visits, 117,746 emergency room visits, 9,500 full- and part-time employees, 873 house staff, 1,667* medical staff, and 3,265 full- and part-time registered nurses. (*Includes other professional personnel including psychologists, podiatrists, NPs, PAs, CRNAs, etc.) [6]

In July 2017, Thomas Jefferson University and Philadelphia University combined to create the newly named Thomas Jefferson University.[ citation needed ]

Merger with Einstein Healthcare Network

In 2018, Jefferson Health reached a conclusive agreement to merge with the Einstein Healthcare Network. The merger created an 18-hospital system and $5.9 billion in revenue including over "50 outpatient and urgent-care centers, leading rehabilitation and post-acute facilities" and maintained almost 39,000 employees. [7] [8] In 2020, the Federal Trade Commission attempted to block the merger. [9]

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals provides medical services across more than 200 specialized centers, programs, departments and divisions. [10]

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals has an Office of Human Research/Division of Clinical Trials Support to assist with the formal clinical trials in which the organization is involved. [11]

Five of the seven physicians on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team are doctors at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. [12] In 2015, Alexander Vaccaro[ who? ] was named the president of the Rothman Institute.[ clarification needed ] [13]

Jefferson Einstein Hospital is a non-profit hospital located in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The hospital is a part of the Thomas Jefferson. The medical center offers residency and fellowship training programs in many specialized areas. It also includes a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia is the largest independent teaching hospital in the Philadelphia region with over 30 accredited programs training over 3,500 students each year with 400 residents.

The healthcare network has a combine total of 1,044 beds and has over 8,500 employees.

HealthShare Exchange (HSX) is a membership-dues-supported nonprofit health information exchange formed in 2009 and incorporated in 2012 by Greater Philadelphia's hospitals, health systems, and healthcare insurers.[1][2] It links the electronic medical record (EMR) systems of different hospital health systems and other healthcare providers — and the claims data of healthcare insurers — to make this information accessible at inpatient and outpatient points of care (including medical practice offices) and for care management. HSX services provide recent clinical care information, and alert providers and health plans to care events.[2] Health information exchange makes patient care more informed and coordinated, and reduces unnecessary care and readmissions. HSX serves the greater Delaware Valley region, including southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.[2]

MossRehab is a physical rehabilitation hospital and other centers located in the Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania that opened in the early 1900s as part of the original Jewish Hospital. Moss became an independent facility in 1952. During the 1990s, MossRehab merged back into the Einstein Healthcare Network. MossRehab's Main Campus is located at 60 Township Line Road, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

Jefferson Frankford Hospital is a non-profit hospital located in Philadelphia and is a part of Jefferson Health Northeast, a multi-state non-profit health system now a part of Jefferson Health. The hospital serve as a general hospital of Aria-Jefferson Health and has a Level II trauma center. It is the oldest hospital in the Jefferson Health Northeast system. It is also a clinical affiliate of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine and provides clinical clerkship education to the medical schools' osteopathic medical students.
