Jens Toornstra (born 4 April 1989) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays for Eredivisie side FC Utrecht. He usually plays as an attacking midfielder. [2]

Club career

Early career

Toornstra was born in Ter Aar. [3] In his youth, he played eight years for amateur football club Alphense Boys in the Tweede Klasse C. In his last year he scored 20 goals for the team. [2] He impressed so much Kees Jansma recommended Toornstra to ADO Den Haag. [2] Initially, the scouts of ADO Den Haag did not believe Toornstra would be as good but ADO Den Haag bought Toornstra for the reserve squad.

ADO Den Haag

In the summer of 2009 Toornstra came to ADO Den Haag with a contract until July 2012. He made his debut in the 3–0 victory against Willem II. [4] Soon, he became first team player for ADO and quickly gained interests from AZ, FC Twente and Roda JC. [5] Toornstra signed a new improved contract on 4 July that same year until the summer of 2013. [6]

In the 2010–11 season Toornstra received the jersey number 7, last worn by Karim Soltani who moved to Iraklis Thessaloniki F.C. He scored his first goal for ADO Den Haag in January against Excelsior [7] after missing not a single game. On 26 May 2011, [8] He scored a hat-trick against Groningen in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. His goals helped Den Haag to a 5–1 lead on aggregate. [9]

Utrecht

At the end of the winter transfer window, Toornstra signed with FC Utrecht. [10] He grew out to be one of the important players.

Feyenoord

On 25 August 2014, Toornstra made a transfer to Feyenoord for a fee of €3.5 million. He signed a four-year deal. [11]

On 22 April 2018, he scored as Feyenoord won the 2017–18 KNVB Cup final 3–0 against AZ Alkmaar. [12]

Utrecht

On 23 August 2022, he returned to his old club FC Utrecht on a free transfer.

International

On 13 May 2010, Toornstra got his first election for the Netherlands under-21 national team for the games against Portugal on 18 and 21 May. [13] He instantly played his first match on 18 May. [14] He scored his first goal for the U-21 team on 11 August 2010 against Liechtenstein. [1]

In May 2013 Toornstra was part of the Netherlands national team's tour of Asia, with friendly matches against China and Indonesia. He made his debut against Indonesia. [15] [16]

The 2014–15 season was Feyenoord's 107th season of play, it marked its 59th season in the Eredivisie and its 93rd consecutive season in the top flight of Dutch football. It was first season with manager Fred Rutten. The club was busy during the summer transfer window, selling or releasing of 12 players and signing 13 new players. Feyenoord had a bad start of the season, dropping to 15th place in the league after losing three and drawing two of its first six league games. They played only the second round of the KNVB Cup; they were knocked out by Go Ahead Eagles. The club also lasted a single round in the Champions League; the third qualifying round consisted of two losses to Beşiktaş. They reached the Europa League group stage by beating FC Zorya Luhansk 4–3 at home after an away draw. The team improved after this early showing. Alles Door Oefening Den Haag, commonly known by the abbreviated name ADO Den Haag [ˈaː.do dɛn ˈɦaːχ], is a Dutch football club from the city of The Hague. They play their home games at Kyocera Stadion which has a capacity of 15,000. During the 2014–15 season, they competed in the Eredivisie, in which they finished 13th, and the KNVB Cup, where they were knocked out in the second round.

The 2015–16 season was Feyenoord's 108th season of play, it marked its 60th season in the Eredivisie and its 94th consecutive season in the top flight of Dutch football. It was the first season with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a former player who played seven seasons for Feyenoord and who played 106 times for Dutch national team. The club started the season relatively well alternating between the second and third place until the halfway point of the season. They then hit a seven-game losing streak among a nine-game stretch without a win and dropped to seventh place.
