Jernigan Institute

The Jernigan Institute is a research and training institute developed and run by the blind. Named after Dr.Kenneth Jernigan, it was the first of its kind. It was established in Baltimore in January 2004. [1] The goal of the institute is to change attitudes about blindness and support the independence of blind individuals. [2]

Overview

The Jernigan Institute is the product of the National Federation of the Blind's campaign to "Change What it Means to be Blind." The campaign's goal was to raise money for an institute focused on research and training on blindness. [3]

The Jernigan institute was officially opened January 30, 2004. Their goal is to understand experiences of blind people and work toward the independence of blind individuals. [2] They work to develop and commercialize assistive technology as determined by people who are blind. [2] [4] The Jernigan Institute provides educational programs, and aims to increase employment opportunities for people who are blind. [2]

Their mission statement is: "The National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute leads the quest to understand the real problems of blindness and to develop innovative education, technologies, products, and services that help the world's blind to achieve independence." [2]

Activities

Employment and Rehabilitation

The primary goal of the institute is to positively impact the employment rate of legally blind adults. [5] One of the programs used to do this is the National Center for Mentoring Excellence. The goal of this program is to affect success of individuals who are blind in their life after high school graduation. [5] Additionally, the institute works to connect people who are blind with networking events, mentorship opportunities, and training to improve their skills to increase the independence of people who are blind. Outreach

The Institute provides information on their website and other outreach-type activities to educate society on what it means to be blind, what can blind people do for employment, and what it is like working with a blind person. [7] The outreach activities highlight real experiences of blind people, so as to provide a broad range of examples and experiences. [7]

National Center for Blind Youth in Science (NCBYS)

The NCBYS is an initiative designed to educate the blind youth of career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) that are often believed to be impossible for blind people to pursue. They also sponsor innovations in education and technology for the blind.

Braille

The Jernigan Institute promotes literacy among blind people of all ages through the use of Braille. They work to give blind youth a Braille education through programs like NFB Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning (BELL), Braille Certification Training Program, and Braille Readers Are Leaders 360 (BRL360). The institute also spreads public awareness of Braille use and works to increase the amount of Braille used in public places across America.

Other

The Jernigan Institute offers various programs that promote and empower independence among blind people. Such programs provide an education in and promote the use of tools and resources for blind youth, leadership training, and empowerment and resources for parents and teachers of blind children. [8]

National Federation of the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is an organization of blind people in the United States. It is the oldest and largest organization led by blind people in the United States. Its national headquarters are in Baltimore, Maryland.

Associated Services for the Blind

The Associated Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ASB) is a private non-profit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It assists those living with vision loss to achieve independence through education, support services to advance necessary skills, and community connections. ASB collaborates with local, regional and national partners to provide additional resources and opportunities to clients.

Youth Business China, abbreviated YBC, is a non-profit program in the People's Republic of China that aims to promote youth entrepreneurship. It is headquartered in Beijing.

A sighted child who is reading at a basic level should be able to understand common words and answer simple questions about the information presented. They should also have enough fluency to get through the material in a timely manner. Over the course of a child's education, these foundations are built on to teach higher levels of math, science, and comprehension skills. Children who are blind not only have the education disadvantage of not being able to see: they also miss out on the very fundamental parts of early and advanced education if not provided with the necessary tools.

Braille Institute of America

The Braille Institute of America (BIA) is a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Los Angeles providing programs, seminars and one-on-one instruction for the visually impaired community in Southern California. Funded almost entirely by private donations, all of the Institute's services are provided completely free of charge. The organization has seven regional centers: Anaheim, Coachella Valley, Laguna Hills, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Barbara, as well as outreach programs at more than 200 locations throughout Southern California. It is a member of the Braille Authority of North America.

The Lighthouse of Houston

The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, non-profit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area to live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 9,000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of Greater Houston.

D2L Global software company

D2L is a global software company with offices in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Europe, and Brazil. It is the developer of the Brightspace learning management system, which is a cloud-based software suite used by schools, institutes of higher education, and businesses for online and blended classroom learning. D2L is the developer of Open Courses, a Massive Open Online Course platform. The acronym D2L stands for Desire 2 Learn.

Uganda National Entrepreneurship Development Institute

National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (Divyangjan), Dehradun is a premier organisation under the administrative control of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Institute is training centre for the blind, located in an area of about 43 acres on Mussoorie-Dehradun Highway. It is also engaged in production of Braille literature, aids and appliances for the visually handicapped. It also undertakes research and developmental activities ensuring emergence of disability inclusive policies, programmes and practices. The Institute is governed by the Management & Advisory Bodies.
