The Kenai Spur Highway is a 39-mile-long (63 km) highway on the Kenai Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska. The road begins at a junction with the Sterling Highway in Soldotna and provides access to the towns of Kenai and Nikiski,dead-ending at the entrance to the Captain Cook State Recreation Area. Visitors traveling between the Homer area and these areas can bypass Soldotna and access the Spur Highway via Kalifornsky Beach Road. The highway is a four-lane undivided road inside of the cities of Soldotna and Kenai and a two-lane road elsewhere. The northern section of the road is also known as the North Kenai Road. In 2018,the Federal Highway Administration approved a plan to extend the road by eight miles to improve access to remote homes in the area.
Peter A. Micciche is an American politician and a Republican member of the Alaska Senate since January 15,2013,and before January 13,2023 representing District O. Micciche was previously the mayor of Soldotna,Alaska,and a member of its city council.
The 2016 Old Iliamna earthquake struck in the Cook Inlet region of Alaska near Iliamna at 1:30 AM AKST on January 24,2016. The quake was centered approximately 162 miles (261 km) from Anchorage,and 65 miles (105 km) from Homer. The earthquake registered 7.1,and was felt across a wide area of Southcentral Alaska,the Kenai Peninsula and as far away as Juneau roughly 700 miles (1,100 km) southeast of the epicenter. Moderate to heavy damage to homes,roads and businesses was experienced over a wide area.

Incumbent Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy won re-election to a second term,becoming the first Republican governor to be re-elected to a second term since Jay Hammond in 1978 and the first governor,regardless of political affiliation,to be re-elected to a second term since Tony Knowles in 1998.
