A member of the Democratic Party,Shaheen served as the 78th governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003. She was the first woman elected governor of New Hampshire,the first woman elected to the Senate from New Hampshire,and the first woman elected as both a governor and a U.S. senator.
