India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard winning two medals – both silver – in athletics and became the first Asian nation to win an Olympic medal. The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920 and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has also competed at several Winter Olympic Games beginning in 1964. Indian athletes have won 35 medals, all at the Summer Games. For a period of time, the Indian Men's Field Hockey Team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning eleven medals in twelve Olympics between 1928 and 1980. Pamela Leila Rai is a former freestyle and butterfly swimmer who represented Canada from 1980 to 1987. Rai is currently a high school math and social justice teacher and a certified yoga instructor trained in India of the Sivananda lineage. She is an honored inductee to the BC Sports Hall of Fame, the Swim BC Hall of Fame, the University of Victoria Legacy Hall of Fame and the Delta Sports Hall of Fame. Rai is the first woman in the world of Indian ancestry, and the first Indo-Canadian to win an Olympic medal.
Sushil Kumar is a former Indian wrestler. He carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics. His 2008 Olympic medal was only the second for India in wrestling, and the first since Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav's bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. In July 2009, he received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna – India's highest honour for sportspersons. On 3 October 2010, Kumar handed the Queen's Baton to Prince Charles in the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Sushil won the gold medal in the 74 kg division at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Sushil won the gold medal in the 74 kg division at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He is the first and only Indian to win a gold medal at World Wrestling Championships.
Rajinder Singh Mor is an Indian former wrestler and retired DIG Haryana Police. Singh won a gold medal in the 1978 Asian Games. He was the most successful Indian wrestler in the Commonwealth Games with two gold medals, in 1978 and 1982. Singh competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics and 1984 Summer Olympics.

Palwinder Singh Cheema is a retired amateur Indian freestyle wrestler, who competed in the men's super heavyweight category. Considered one of India's top wrestlers in his decade, Cheema has claimed the gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, scored two bronze in the 120-kg division at the Asian Games, and also represented his nation India at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Throughout his sporting career, Cheema trained full-time for NIS Patiala Wrestling Club under his coach and father Sukhchain Singh Cheema.
Sakshi Malik is a former Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. In 2017, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award and in 2024, she became the first Indian wrestler to feature in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program, along with fellow female wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.

Bishambar Singh is a retired Indian bantamweight wrestler. In 1966 he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the Asian Games, both in freestyle wrestling. Next year he won a silver medal at the world championships, he is the 1st Indian who won the Silver medal in world wrestling championship. He competed at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics in freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions with the best result of sixth place in freestyle in 1964. The same year he received the Arjuna Award. He should not be confused with fellow wrestlers Bhim Singh and Bishwanath Singh who competed in the same period, but in heavyweight categories.
