Joanie Talagtag Delgaco [1] (born March 1, 1998 [2] ) is a Filipino rower who made history as the first female rower from her country who qualified in the 2024 Summer Olympics. [3]

Career

Delgaco would become part of the Philippine national team in 2015. [4]

At the SEA Games she would in a gold medal in the 2019 edition hosted in the Philippines; and a silver and two bronzes in the 2021 edition in Vietnam in 2022. [4]

Delgaco would qualify for the now-cancelled 2023 World Beach Games in Bali after winning a gold medal in the mixed double sculls with Edgar Ilas at the 2023 Asian Rowing Beach Sprint Championships in Pattaya. [4]

Delgaco would take part in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023. She reached the medal round for the single sculls event but failed to podium. [5]

She would qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris via the Asian & Oceania Qualification Regatta. She is the first ever female rower to qualify for the Philippines in the Olympics. [6] [7]

Joanie ranked second in the Final D of the women's single sculls and 20th overall at the 2024 Paris Olympics [8] After her Paris stint, Delgaco received an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship from Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron (FISA) Development Head, Daniela Gomes. [9]

Personal life

Hailing from Iriga, Camarines Sur, [10] [11] she is also an enlisted personnel of the Philippine Navy. [12] [13] Prior to rowing she played beach volleyball at the Palarong Pambansa. [14]

Rowing has been part of the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1900 Games. Rowing was on the program at the 1896 Summer Olympics but was cancelled due to bad weather. Martin Sinković is a Croatian rower. He is the younger brother of fellow rower Valent Sinković, with whom he has won three Olympic gold medals. The brothers are the most decorated Croatian Summer Olympians in history and won gold medals in the double sculls at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the coxless pair at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the coxless pair at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Sinković won the silver medal in the quadruple sculls at the 2012 Summer Olympics with his brother, David Šain and Damir Martin. He is a six-time world champion, twice in quadruple sculls, double sculls and coxless pair each, and seven-time European champion, with four titles in double sculls and three titles in coxless pair. Sinković is also a two-time U23 world champion in quadruple sculls with his brother, Šain and Martin.

Kara Michelle Kohler is an American female crew rower. She won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the quadruple sculls event. She also has a World Championship gold medal in the coxless four and a World Championship bronze in the single sculls.

Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo is a Filipino artistic gymnast. He is the 2024 Olympic gold medalist at the floor exercise and vault events. He is the first Filipino and the first male Southeast Asian gymnast to medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships with his floor exercise bronze medal finish in 2018, as well as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to achieve a gold medal finish for the same criteria in 2019 at the same event. With multiple medals on the international stage, Yulo is the second person to win an Olympic gold medal for the Philippines, the first person to win multiple Olympic gold medals for the country, and the first Southeast Asian athlete to win multiple gold medals at the Olympic Games.

Karolien Florijn is a Dutch rower. She was a member of the Dutch coxless four, along with Ellen Hogerwerf, Ymkje Clevering and Veronique Meester, that won an Olympic silver medal in Tokyo 2020. The same crew was a three-time European Champion and won a silver medal at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. Florijn returned to the single sculls in 2022, winning the overall World Rowing Cup trophy and winning the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich. She won the single sculls event at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.

Cris Marasigan Nievarez is a Filipino rower who competes for the Philippines in international rowing competition. He has qualified to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Vanessa Palomar Sarno is a Filipino weightlifter who is a gold medalist in major international competitions, including the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships and the 2023 Southeast Asian Games. She has set new Philippine records and bagged three gold medals at the 2023 Asian Youth and Junior Championships. Sarno is currently recognized as one of the top weightlifters in the Philippines.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rowing at the 2024 Summer Olympics</span>

The rowing competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris ran from 27 July to 3 August at the Stade nautique de Vaires-sur-Marne, National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne. The number of rowers competing across fourteen gender-based categories at these Games was reduced from 526 to 502, with an equal distribution between men’s and women’s events. Despite the slight changes in athlete figures, the rowing program for Paris 2024 remained constant from the previous edition as the competition featured an equal number of categories for men and women, with seven each.

502 athletes qualified for rowing at the 2024 Summer Olympics. About two-thirds of the total quota was awarded to the National Olympic Committees, not to specific athletes, at the 2023 World Rowing Championships on 3 to 10 September in Belgrade, Serbia. The remainder of the total quota was attributed to the eligible rowers at each of the four continental qualification regattas in Asia and Oceania, the Americas, Africa, and Europe, and at the final Olympic qualification regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Zoi Fitsiou is a Greek rower. She competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the lightweight double sculls.
