Jody Lee Lipes (born January 18, 1982) is an American cinematographer and filmmaker.

Life and career

A native of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, [1] Lipes attended New York University, where he studied film. He worked extensively on short films before serving as cinematographer on Afterschool , directed by Antonio Campos and Tiny Furniture , directed by Lena Dunham.

Lipes would collaborate with Dunham again as cinematographer and director for several episodes of her HBO series Girls . [2] Lipes would later work as cinematographer for Girls producer Judd Apatow's comedy Trainwreck , starring Amy Schumer. [3]

Lipes worked as cinematographer for Kenneth Lonergan's drama Manchester by the Sea , which he shot digitally. [4] He also shot A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood , directed by Marielle Heller, and The Good Nurse , directed by Tobias Lindholm. [5] [6] Lipes was also the cinematographer for Savanah Leaf's Earth Mama in 2023. [7]

As a director, he helmed a documentary on the NY Export Opus Jazz ballet, which had a screening at the annual South by Southwest festival, and the documentary Ballet 422, which screened at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. [8]

Lipes became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 2021. [9]

The film premiered at South by Southwest, where it won the award for Best Narrative Feature, screened at such festivals as Maryland Film Festival, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 12, 2010. Dunham plays Aura, an aimless, jilted film school graduate who returns home on what she hopes is a temporary basis. Paz de la Jolla is a contemporary ballet choreographed by Justin Peck for the New York City Ballet. It is Peck's third choreographed piece, the 422nd ballet choreographed for the New York City Ballet, and its creation was featured in the documentary Ballet 422. The costumes were designed by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung with supervision from Marc Happel, with lighting by Mark Stanley The 20-minute piece features 18 dancers and premiered on January 13, 2013.
