Joseph Rossi (born 1979) is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Michigan State.

Early life

Rossi grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he attended Central Catholic High School. He competed on the football team as a defensive lineman. Rossi then accepted a scholarship to continue his playing career at Allegheny College. He was a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). [1]

Coaching career

On March 12, 2012, Rossi was named the special teams coordinator for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team. [2] [3] [4] [5] In 2013, Rossi was elevated to defensive coordinator for the Scarlet Knights.

Rossi was named Gophers defensive line coach in January 2018 after working as a quality control assistant for Minnesota in 2017. On November 24, 2018, Joe Rossi was promoted to defensive coordinator. [6] In 2022, he coached the Gophers defense to a pair of shutouts for the first time since 2006. [7]

On December 11, 2023, Rossi was named the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for Michigan State [8]

The Scarlet Knights played their home games at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, NJ as a member of the American Athletic Conference. This was the second season with Kyle Flood as the head coach, and last season before transitioning to playing in the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 6–7, 3–5 in American Athletic play to finish in a tie for sixth place. They were invited to the Pinstripe Bowl where they were defeated by Notre Dame. Notre Dame would later vacate the win on November 22, 2016 due to academic violations.

Tracy Lee Claeys is a former American football coach. Claeys served as the head football coach at University of Minnesota from midway into the 2015 season through the end of the 2016 season. He was an assistant coach under Jerry Kill for 21 years at Saginaw Valley State University, Emporia State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Northern Illinois University, and Minnesota—the last 16 as his defensive coordinator. Claeys was the defensive coordinator at Washington State University from 2018 to 2019 and the linebackers coach at Virginia Tech in 2020. He announced his retirement in January 2021.

They finished the season 8–5, 5–3 in Big Ten play to finish in a tie for second place in the West Division. They were invited to the Citrus Bowl where they lost to Missouri. The 2019 Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team represented Rutgers University during the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Scarlet Knights played their home games at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey and competed as members of the East Division of the Big Ten Conference. They were led by fourth-year head coach Chris Ash. On September 29, 2019, Ash was fired after 313 seasons as head coach. He posted an overall record of 8–32 and 3–26 in Big Ten play. Nunzio Campanile was their interim head coach for the remainder of the season. They finished the season 2–10, 0–9 in Big Ten play to finish in last place in the East Division.
