Johanna Wallroth (born 1993) is a Swedish operatic soprano who made an international career in opera and concert.

Life and career

Born in Sweden in 1993, [1] Wallroth took ballet classes and sang in the children's chorus of the Royal Swedish Opera. [1] She first trained to become a dancer at the Royal Swedish Ballet school, and then studied voice, [2] from 2016 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she graduated. [1]

She made her operatic debut as Barbarina in Mozart's Le nozze di figaro in 2013 at the Ulriksdal Palace Theatre in Stockholm, conducted by Arnold Östman. She appeared in Vienna as Eurydice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice in a performance of the university, [2] and as Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, where she returned as Gretel in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel and as Susanna in Le nozze di figaro. [1] She performed Mozart's Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Gnessin State Musical College, [1] Ismene in Telemann's Orpheus at Vadstena Castle, and both Sandmännchen and Taumännchen in Hänsel und Gretel for NorrlandsOperan in Umeå. [2] In 2019 she won the Mirjam Helin Competition. [1] She then became a member of the Vienna State Opera's studio in 2020, earning the Birgit Nilsson scholarship of 2021. [2]

In 2022, Wallroth returned to Stockholm where she soloed as Leocasta in Vivaldi's Il Giustino [3]

In 2023, she was named as one of eight New Generation Artists of the BBC for the period 2023 to 2025. [4]

Opera

In 2023 Wallroth was Barbarina again in a new production of the Vienna State Opera directed by Barrie Kosky. [5]

Concert

Wallroth is classical artist in residence with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, [6] performing works such as Alban Berg's Seven Early Songs, conducted by Daniel Harding, and Schubert's Mass No. 6, conducted by András Schiff. [7]

She performed the soprano solo of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in a New Year's concert with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. She appeared at the Vienna Musikverein in the spring of 2023, singing in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Orchester Wiener Akademie conducted by Martin Haselböck. [7]

Wallroth appeared at the 2023 Rheingau Musik Festival in a concert at Eberbach Abbey of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, with the Oslo Philharmonic conducted by Klaus Mäkelä. [8] A reviewer from the FAZ wrote about an approach of both depth and lightness, [9] while a reviewer from the Frankfurter Rundschau noted her grandiose interpretation of the music's absurdity and lust ("Irrwitz und Lust"). Heather Engebretson is a Chinese-American operatic soprano who made a career mostly in Europe. Based at German opera ensembles for several years, she has worked freelance from 2017, and widened her repertoire from coloratura roles to leading characters such as Puccini's Madama Butterfly. She has been praised for her convincing acting as well as the expressiveness of her lyric voice, with performances including the Royal Opera House in London, the Bolshoi Theatre and Oper Frankfurt.

She has been particularly active with the Houston Grand Opera where she has performed in more than a dozen operas since 2004, including the world premieres of Daniel Catán's Salsipuedes: a Tale of Love, War and Anchovies (2004), Mark Adamo's Lysistrata (2005), and Ricky Ian Gordon's The House without a Christmas Tree (2017). Jana Hrochová née Štefáčková is a Czech operatic mezzo-soprano, based at the National Theatre Brno and appearing internationally in opera and concert, also under the name Wallingerová.

Kihwan Sim is a South Korean operatic bass-baritone based at Oper Frankfurt, where he has performed leading roles such as the title role of Mozart's Figaro and Orest in Elektra by Richard Strauss. He has appeared as a guest internationally, including at the Metropolitan Opera.

Cecelia Hall is an American operatic mezzo-soprano. A native of North Carolina, Hall trained as a singer at DePaul University and the Juilliard School before becoming a member of the young artist programs at the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She made her European debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2014 and became a resident artist at Oper Frankfurt in 2016; a position she remains in as of 2024. She continues to perform as a guest artist in operas and concerts with other organizations internationally. She has performed leading roles in the mezzo-soprano repertoire including title roles, both women such as Purcell's Dido, Rossini's La Cenerentola, and Piazzolla's María de Buenos Aires, and men including Cavalli's Eliogabalo, Handel's Ariodante, Serse and Teseo, Mozart's Ascanio in Alba and Humperdinck's Hänsel.

Liviu Holender is an Austrian operatic baritone, based at the Oper Frankfurt, where he has performed leading roles including the Count in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Henrik in Carl Nielsen's Maskarade and Hans in Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge. He has appeared internationally. In recital, concert and recording he has focused on Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn and music by other composers of the early 20th century.
