Pawtucket is a city in Providence County,Rhode Island. The population was 75,604 at the 2020 census,making the city the fourth-largest in the state. Pawtucket borders Providence and East Providence to the south,Central Falls and Lincoln to the north,and North Providence to the west. The city also borders the Massachusetts municipalities of Seekonk and Attleboro.
The Pawtucket Red Sox,known colloquially as the PawSox,were a professional minor league baseball club based in Pawtucket,Rhode Island. Carl Gray "The Grey Fox" Snavely was an American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Bucknell University (1927–1933),the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,Cornell University (1936–1944),and Washington University in St. Louis (1953–1958),compiling a career college football record of 180–96–16. Snavely was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1965.
Joseph Vincent Cavanagh Jr. is an American attorney and former ice hockey player. Cavanagh was a three-time all-state selection as a high schooler in Rhode Island. He went on to play hockey at Harvard University where he earned multiple awards including being named an All-American for three straight years. He left Harvard as the school's all-time assist leader which has since been passed. However,he remains the Beanpot's all-time leading scorer. An injury led him to stop pursuing a career in hockey. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1994 and named one of the top 50 players in ECAC history in 2010. Following his hockey career Cavanagh began practicing law becoming a successful attorney. He is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association and the Board of Bar Examiners.
Bob Bellemore is a known presence in Rhode Island's ice hockey and baseball communities. He is a former standout goaltender and baseball player for Providence College in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He has also served as the goaltending coach for the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils.
Paul Francois Guay is an American former professional ice hockey player. He is now an assistant coach for his high school's hockey team and is a captain in the Pawtucket Fire Department. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020.
Sara Ann DeCosta is an American ice hockey player. She won a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics,and a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Thomas Songin is an American former professional ice hockey player who played 43 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Boston Bruins between 1978 and 1981. He recorded five goals and five assists.
Ernest T. Savignano was an American football player who played quarterback,halfback,and kicker for the Brown Bears of Brown University. Savignano captained Brown's 1941 football team. During his football career at the school,he received selection to the All-New England team and honorable mention for the College Football All-America Team. Competing against Lafayette University in 1941,Savignano set a school record for longest punt in a game with a 65-yard kick. Brown University selected him for their 1940s All-Decade Team in 2003.
Robert Bruce Morris was an American basketball head coach as well as former collegiate athlete. He served as the head coach for the Providence Steamrollers,a Basketball Association of America team,in 1946–47. Morris then guided Brown University's men's basketball team from 1947 to 1954. He accumulated a 28–32 record with Providence and overall 61–87 record with Brown. While at Brown,one of his players was future College Football Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno,who earned two varsity letters.
Joseph Henry Gainer was an American politician who served as the 26th mayor of Providence,Rhode Island. He served seven terms,from 1913 until 1927.
