William John Murphy (born January 4,1963) is an American attorney and was a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives,representing the 26th District from 1993 to 2011. He served as the 221st Speaker of the House from January 7,2003,to February 11,2010,when he handed over the gavel to his majority leader,Gordon D. Fox.
He graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Government in 1985 and from the University of New Hampshire School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1989. [4] [2]
He has practiced law in Providence,Rhode Island with his own law firm Murphy &Fay,LLP. [4] [2]
He served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing the 26th District from 1993 to 2011. [2] [4] While in this position he served as Vice Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and later Speaker of the House. [2] [4]
He later registered as a lobbyist and has lobbied in both the Rhode Island General Assembly and the Office of the Governor of Rhode Island for groups such as Twin Rivers Casino,the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers and Advance America Cash Advance Centers. [5] [6] [7]
He married his wife Stacey on March 26,1994,at Sacred Heart Church in West Warwick,Rhode Island. [1] They later had two children.
Gordon Dennis Fox is an American attorney and politician from Providence,Rhode Island. He served formerly as the Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives,before resigning in disgrace. A member of the Democratic Party,he was first elected to the legislature in 1992. On June 11,2015 Fox was sentenced to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges including bribery,fraud,and filing a false tax return.
Patrick C. Lynch is an American lawyer who served as Rhode Island's 72nd Attorney General. He oversaw the investigation and prosecution of the second-deadliest fire in Rhode Island history,the Station Nightclub Fire,and also sued former lead paint manufacturers for cleanup costs associated with their old products. He won reelection in 2006,and attempted unsuccessfully to run for governor of Rhode Island in 2010,where he dropped out before the Democratic Primary.
Frank G. Ferri is an American politician who was a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives,representing the 22nd district from October 24,2007 until January 6,2015. A Rhode Island native,Ferri grew up in Providence before earning a degree in business from Bryant University. His district is located in Warwick and includes the neighborhoods of Warwick Neck and Oakland Beach.
Since the Great Depression,Rhode Island politics have been dominated by the Rhode Island Democratic Party,and the state is considered part of the Democrats' "Blue Wall." Democrats have won all but four presidential elections since 1928,with the exceptions being 1952,1956,1972,and 1984. The Rhode Island Republican Party,although virtually non-existent in the Rhode Island General Assembly,has remained competitive in gubernatorial elections,having won one as recently as 2006. Until 2014,Democrats did not win a gubernatorial election in the state since 1992,and it was not until 2018 that they won one by double digits. The Rhode Island General Assembly has continuously been under Democratic control since 1959.
Donald J. Lally,Jr is an American attorney and former Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives,representing the 48th District from 1989 to 2002 and the 33rd district from 2003 to 2015 that included parts of Narragansett and South Kingstown,Rhode Island. From 2010 Lally served as House Deputy Majority Whip.
Khalil Joseph Shekarchi is an American politician currently serving as the Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. A Democrat,he has represented District 23 in Warwick since January 1,2013. He was chairman of the House Labor Committee until his Democratic colleagues elected him as the House majority leader in November 2016. After four years as majority leader,his colleagues elected him speaker in November 2020 following the defeat of longtime speaker Nicholas Mattiello. Shekarchi considers himself a moderate Democrat.

Dennis M. Canario is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing District 71 since January 1,2013. He is also the deputy majority leader of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Prior to being elected to District 71,Dennis served on the Portsmouth Town Council from 2004 to 2010. During the 2008 session,Dennis served as the president of the town council.
Patricia L. Morgan is an American politician and Republican member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing district 26 since 2021. She formerly represented district 26 from 2011 until 2019,where she chose not to run again. She became the first female minority leader of the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 2017,after she was chosen by the Republican caucus members on November 15,2016,when former minority leader Brian Newberry stepped down from the position.

Prior to that he had served as the Senior Deputy Majority Leader under Speaker Gordon Fox. In 2021,after Joe Shekarchi was elected speaker,Edwards was appointed Majority Floor Manager and replaced as Majority Whip by Katherine Kazarian. Edwards serves on the House Finance,House Oversight,House Municipal Government and House Labor Committees. In September 2014,Edwards became a CSG Henry Toll Fellow.
John J. DeSimone is an American politician,a former Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives who represented House District 6 from January 1993 until January 2003 and District 5 from January 2003 to January 2017. DeSimone was narrowly defeated in the 2016 Democratic primary by progressive candidate Marcia Ranglin-Vassell,ending his 24 year tenure in the General Assembly.
