John Thomas Howell (born April 28, 1978) is a former American football safety in the National Football League (NFL). He played professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks.
Howell was born in North Platte, Nebraska, and attended Mullen High School in Mullen, Nebraska. [1] He was a letterman in American football, wrestling, track and field, and golf. In football, he was a two-time first-team All-Conference honoree, and as a senior, he was an All-State honorable mention selection. In wrestling, he was a state runner-up as a junior and as a senior, won the Nebraska State Championship.[ citation needed ]
Howell played college football at Colorado State University, [2] and attended the university on a football scholarship.
Howell was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL draft. [3] [4] He played four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002. Howell signed with the Seattle Seahawks for the 2006 season. [5] He suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in the 2006 Seahawks' playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys and was waived shortly thereafter.

Howell lives in Colorado with his wife, Laura, and their three children. [6] His daughter Jaelin is a soccer player. His son Jack is a safety for Colorado State.
Howell is an avid hunter and active with organizations such as Safari Club International, the Dallas Safari Club, and the National Rifle Association of America. In 2007, he co-founded Dismal River Outfitters, a hunting ranch and resort in Mullen, Nebraska, with his former Buccaneer and Seahawk teammate, Joe Jurevicius. [6] [7] [8]
Vincent Terrell Jackson was an American professional football wide receiver who played for 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Northern Colorado Bears, and was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson was selected to the Pro Bowl three times and exceeded 1,000 receiving yards six times in his career. Jackson died in 2021, with the official cause of his death reported as chronic alcohol abuse. An autopsy found Stage 2 chronic traumatic encephalopathy in his brain.
Trent Farris Dilfer is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the head football coach for the UAB Blazers. Dilfer previously played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons. He achieved his greatest professional success as the starting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens during their Super Bowl-winning season in 2000.
Joseph Michael Jurevicius is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Barrett James Ruud is an American football coach who serves as inside linebackers coach for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft and also played for the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans. He played college football at Nebraska, where he was the inside linebackers coach from 2018 to 2022.

Mark Barron is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he was twice recognized as an All-American, and was a member of two BCS National Championship teams. He was selected as a strong safety by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, where he played for two and a half seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Rams in 2014, where he moved to the linebacker position.
