John Ojo (born March 2, 1990) is a former American football cornerback. He was a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He made his professional debut for the Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) in 2014 after playing college football at Florida A&M University. He has also been a member of the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL).
Ojo played high school football at Florida State University School (Florida High), where he played as both a receiver and safety. In his senior season, he finished with five touchdowns on offense and six interceptions on defense.
Starting in 2008, Ojo played college football for the Florida A&M Rattlers as a safety. [1] After suffering a broken ankle in his first game with the Rattlers, Ojo received redshirt status and did not play for the rest of the 2008 season. [2] He started at the free safety position for the first time in 2009. [1] He was named to the All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference first-team in 2011. In the second game of the 2012 season, he received a metatarsophalangeal joint sprain, also known as turf toe, which ended his season. [2] He was again able to obtain redshirt status, preserving his final year of eligibility. [3] Ojo played his last year with the Rattlers in 2013 as a sixth-year senior. [4] He finished his college career with at least 131 tackles, seven interceptions, and six pass break ups. [5]
Ojo was eligible for the 2014 NFL draft, but went undrafted. [6] He was invited to try out for the Seattle Seahawks in May 2014, but was not signed to the team. [7]
John Ojo was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) to their practice squad on October 9 and was released a month later. [8] Ojo was again signed by the Edmonton Eskimos on April 29, 2015. [9] On June 21, Ojo was dropped from the active roster and added to the practice squad among the final round of roster changes in the preseason. [10] He was moved back to the active roster on June 26, [11] and made his CFL debut in the season opener against the Toronto Argonauts on June 27, 2015, where he recorded 2 tackles and recovered a fumble. [12] In the Eskimos' home opener against the Ottawa Redblacks, Ojo caught an interception and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown, adding four tackles. [13] [14] Over the course of the season, Ojo became a more prominent member of the Eskimos defense, eventually contributing 41 tackles, 8 special teams tackles and 5 interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. During preseason Ojo ruptured an Achilles tendon in practice and missed the entire 2016 season. [15] Following the 2016 season he was not re-signed by the Eskimos and became a free agent on February 14, 2017.
As of mid February 2017, Ojo's recovery was set to be completed by the end of March 2017, and he reportedly had up to eight NFL workouts lined up. [16]
On April 7, 2017, Ojo signed with the New York Jets. [17] On May 5, 2017, he was waived by the Jets. [18]
Ojo returned to the CFL on March 26, 2018, when he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. [19] Ojo was released by the Riders at the start of training camp on May 22, 2018. [20]
John Chick is a former professional Canadian football defensive end who played eight seasons in the Canadian Football League, primarily with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. After signing with Saskatchewan in 2007, he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player after the 2009 CFL season. He would help the team capture the Grey Cup twice, in 2007 and 2013. Chick has also spent time in the National Football League (NFL) with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars. Prior to playing professional football, Chick played college football for the Utah State Aggies. During his senior season with the Aggies, Chick recorded 12.5 quarterback sacks, good enough for fifth overall in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Chick also played for the Hamilton Tiger Cats and Edmonton Eskimos later in his career.
Adarius Bowman is a former American professional gridiron football wide receiver in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as an undrafted free agent in 2008. Bowman has also been a member Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Montreal Alouettes, and Edmonton Eskimos/Elks. He played college football at Oklahoma State. Bowman was a Grey Cup Champion and three time CFL All-Star having accumulated 652 receptions for 9,491 yards and 49 touchdowns in 141 career games.
Mark Restelli is a former professional Canadian football linebacker. He most recently attended training camp with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos as a street free agent in 2009 and played until he was signed by the Miami Dolphins in 2011. Despite a strong preseason, on September 4, 2011, he was released by the Dolphins during their final roster cuts. On September 9, 2011, he announced that he would be resuming his football career in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos. He played college football for the Cal Poly Mustangs.
Tokumbo "Tumbo" Abanikanda is a former professional American and Canadian football linebacker. He was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos as a street free agent in 2009. He played college football for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
John Cody Sherritt is the linebackers coach and pass game coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is a former Canadian football linebacker who played in eight seasons for the Edmonton Eskimos and won one Grey Cup championship in 2015. Sherritt played his college football at Eastern Washington and was the 2010 recipient of the Buck Buchanan Award.
Corbin Sharun is a professional Canadian football defensive back and special teams specialist who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in 2010, where he played for five seasons. He played college football for the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men and junior football for the Edmonton Wildcats.
Larry Dean is an American former professional football linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He played college football at Valdosta State. Dean was also a member of the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Edmonton Eskimos, and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Loucheiz Purifoy is an American professional football defensive back for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Purifoy played college football for the University of Florida. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent after the 2014 NFL draft, and has also been a member of the Seattle Seahawks, BC Lions, Ottawa Redblacks, and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
