John Pettibone is the former vocalist for the Seattle metalcore band Himsa. [1] Before joining the band for the 2001 release of the Death Is Infinite EP, Pettibone was the lead vocalist for Undertow, a straight edge hardcore band which was also based in Seattle. He also sang for Nineironspitfire for a short time.
Himsa is an American heavy metal band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1998, their band name is from the Sanskrit word himsa, which means "harm" or "violence".
Straight edge is a subculture originated from hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco and other recreational drugs, in reaction to the excesses of punk subculture. For some, this extends to refraining from engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet or not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term straight edge was adopted from the 1981 song "Straight Edge" by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat.
Pettibone is currently[ when? ] the lead vocalist for The Vows. The band, made up of members from other local hardcore bands such as Champion, released an EP. The Vows, in mid-2006 on Indecision Records, and the same release as a 7" on Dead and Gone Records, although not a lot has been heard of them since. In addition to his work with The Vows, Pettibone is also the vocalist in the sludge/crust influenced metal band Iamthethorn, who are signed to Goodfellow Records. This band released its first EP, You Are The Lamb on February 20, 2007.
Champion was a straight edge hardcore punk band that was formed by vocalist Jim Hesketh, and guitarist Chris Williams, in the spring of 1999 in Seattle, Washington.
Indecision Records is an independent American hardcore punk record label which was started by punk photographer and fanzine editor Dave Mandel in 1992 as an offshoot of his fanzine, Indecision. It is based in Garden Grove, California, and until about 2001 it was based in nearby Huntington Beach. Indecision Records was responsible for launching the careers of many of Orange County's wave of 1990s hardcore bands, such as Throwdown, Death by Stereo, Bleeding Through, and Adamantium, as well as re-issuing material that was otherwise out-of-print.
As of December 2008, Pettibone was fronting the Seattle-based metal/experimental band, Heiress. He announced a one-off Undertow reunion show in May 2009.
Heiress is an American band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2006. Their style blends influences from hardcore punk, heavy metal and post-rock. They signed to Deathwish Inc. in 2010, and released their debut album Early Frost in 2013.
Pettibone appeared on the Bleeding Through song "Rise" on the Portrait of the Goddess album. He has also contributed backing vocals on the Botch EP An Anthology Of Dead Ends, as well as the Fall From Grace single "Last Straw". More recently,[ when? ] Pettibone provided backing vocals on "Cutter", a track from the 2009 Converge album, Axe to Fall .
Bleeding Through is an American metalcore band from Orange County, California. Formed in 1999, the band blended influences stemming from modern hardcore punk, symphonic black metal, and melodic death metal. Although the band was often labeled as simply metalcore, when Brandan Schieppati was asked if he considered Bleeding Through a hardcore band, he said: "I think we're a hardcore band and I'll never say we are a metal band, we're all hardcore kids and we came from the hardcore scene. Ours is just a different version of hardcore, we're trying to do something which adds a different variety to the hardcore scene, which has been sounding the same way for so long."
Botch was an American metalcore band formed in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, featuring Brian Cook, Dave Knudson, Tim Latona and Dave Verellen, spent four years as a garage band and released several demos and EPs before signing to Hydra Head Records. Through the label, Botch released two studio albums: American Nervoso (1998) and We Are the Romans (1999). The group toured extensively and internationally in support of their albums with liked-minded bands such as The Blood Brothers, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ink & Dagger and Jesuit. Botch struggled to write a third studio album, and in 2002 the group broke up due to tensions among the band members and creative differences. Hydra Head posthumously released an EP of songs the group had been working on before they split titled An Anthology of Dead Ends and a live album documenting their final show titled 061502 in 2006.
Converge is an American hardcore punk band formed by vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts in 1990. During the recording of their seminal fourth album Jane Doe, the group became a four-piece with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the addition of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. This lineup has remained intact since. They have released nine studio albums, three live albums, and numerous EPs. The band's sound is rooted in both hardcore punk and heavy metal, and they are considered pioneers of metalcore as well as its subgenre mathcore.
Pettibone is also currently[ when? ] working as production manager at El Corazon (formerly The Off Ramp) in Seattle, Washington.
