John Raymond "JR" Ranch (born 16 November 1940) is an Australian former rower, twice a national champion and a silver medal winner at the 1968 Summer Olympics.

Early life

Ranch was born in Bondi, New South Wales and moved to Orange, New South Wales at four years of age when his father became the licensee of the Tourist Hotel there. He was schooled at the Santa Maria Convent school and then at De La Salle College, Orange. He attended Sydney University from 1959, and joined the Sydney University Boat Club as well as rowing in surf boats at the Bondi Surf Club. [1]

Rowing career

From the Sydney University Boat Club Ranch was chosen to represent Australia in a Trans-Tasman regatta against New Zealand in 1965 rowing in the four seat of the men's eight. That crew placed second in both of its match races. [2] In 1966 Ranch was seated at bow in the Australian men's coxed four which competed at the second ever World Rowing Championships in Bled, Yugoslavia and placed eighth. [3] In 1968 he was seated at three in the Australian men's eight which won the silver medal at the Mexico Olympics. [4]

Ranch rowed in New South Wales representative state eights contesting the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta on three occasions in 1966, 1968, 1969 and won King's Cup in 1968. [5] At the 1966 Australian Rowing Championships in a composite SRC/SUBC crew Ranch, Chris Stevens, Alf Duval, Peter Dickson, and cox Brian Thomas won the Australian coxed four title. [6]

On retirement, he coached at Sydney University and the Sydney Rowing Club. In 1985 again as a rower, Ranch represented Australia at the World Masters Games in Toronto, Canada.

A national and Commonwealth Games champion, she won a bronze medal in the coxed four at the 1984 Summer Olympics, rowing in the three seat. It was Australia's first Olympic medal in women's rowing.

Paul Anthony Thompson MBE is an Australian elite level rowing coach and former rower. As a rower he was an Australian under-age champion, won a silver medal at the 1985 U23 World Championships and rowed in senior King's Cup eights for both South Australia and New South Wales. He has coached Australian and British crews to World Championship titles and Olympic medals including taking Kate Slatter and Megan Still to Australia's first women's Olympic rowing gold at Atlanta 1996. By 2012 he was Great Britain's head coach for women and lightweights and took British crews to three gold and two silver medals at London 2012. Since 2022 he has been Rowing Australia's High Performance Director.

Graeme Keith Allan was an Australian representative rower who competed at two Olympic Games.

Roger Arthur Ninham was an Australian Olympian stillwater rower, a surfboat rower and surfcraft boat builder. As a stillwater rower he was a six-time national champion across both sculling and sweep-oared boats and competed at two Olympic Games.

Gary Herford was an Australian rower. He competed in the men's coxed four event at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Kim Mackney is an Australian rower. He competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. From school until the national elite representative level and onto a long world-class masters career, Mackney rowed competitively for over fifty years. He can be credited with salvaging and re-establishing the Glebe Rowing Club in Sydney after its 1992 demise.

Robert D. Paver is an Australian dermatologist and Mohs surgeon and a former national representative rower. As a rower he was a four-time Australian champion who represented at world championships and competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Summer Olympics.

John Clark is an Australian former rower. He was a six-time national champion who competed at world championships and in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Ian Clubb is an Australian Human Resources business executive and former Olympian rower. He was an eleven-time national champion rower who represented at four world championships and in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. He won five consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1976 to 1980.

Tim Conrad is an Australian rowing coach and former Olympian rower. He was a five time national champion and competed in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Islay Lee is an Australian former rower. He was a fifteen-time national champion in both sculls and sweep-oared boats, a national representative at world championships and a dual Olympian. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics. From 1976 to 1980 he was Australia's prominent sweep-oared stroke, setting the pace in Sydney Rowing Club crews which won five successive national titles in the coxed four, three successive titles in a coxed pair, and in three successive King's Cup winning New South Wales selection eights.

Gordon Clubb is an Australian former rower. He was an eight-time national champion rower who represented at three world championships. He won four consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1977 to 1980.

Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
