Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards KNH,OBE is an Antiguan retired cricketer who represented the West Indies at Test and international levels. Viv Richards scored 4,000 test runs at no.3 at a average of 62. Walter Reginald Hammond was an English first-class cricketer who played for Gloucestershire in a career that lasted from 1920 to 1951. Beginning as a professional,he later became an amateur and was appointed captain of England. Primarily a middle-order batsman,Wisden Cricketers' Almanack described him in his obituary as one of the four best batsmen in the history of cricket. He was considered to be the best English batsman of the 1930s by commentators and those with whom he played;they also said that he was one of the best slip fielders ever. Hammond was an effective fast-medium pace bowler and contemporaries believed that if he had been less reluctant to bowl,he could have achieved even more with the ball than he did.
Robert Graeme Pollock is a former cricketer for South Africa,Transvaal and Eastern Province. A member of a famous cricketing family,Pollock is widely regarded as one of South Africa's greatest ever cricketers,and as one of the finest batsmen to have played Test cricket. Despite Pollock's international career being cut short at the age of 26 by the sporting boycott of South Africa,and all but one of his 23 Test matches being against England and Australia,the leading cricket nations of the day,he broke a number of records. His completed career Test match batting average of 60.97 remains fourth best after Sir Donald Bradman's (99.94),Steve Smith's,and Adam Voges's averages.
Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876,the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895,since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Essex currently play all their home games at the County Cricket Ground,Chelmsford. The club has formerly used other venues throughout the county including Lower Castle Park in Colchester,Valentines Park in Ilford,Leyton Cricket Ground,the Gidea Park Sports Ground in Romford,and Garon Park and Southchurch Park,both in Southend. Its limited overs team is called the Essex Eagles.
Wilfred Rhodes was an English professional cricketer who played 58 Test matches for England between 1899 and 1930. In Tests,Rhodes took 127 wickets and scored 2,325 runs,becoming the first Englishman to complete the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in Test matches. He holds the world records both for the most appearances made in first-class cricket,and for the most wickets taken (4,204). He completed the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in an English cricket season a record 16 times. Rhodes played for Yorkshire and England into his fifties,and in his final Test in 1930 was,at 52 years and 165 days,the oldest player who has appeared in a Test match.
Hugh Trumble was an Australian cricketer who played 32 Test matches as a bowling all-rounder between 1890 and 1904. He captained the Australian team in two Tests,winning both. Trumble took 141 wickets in Test cricket—a world record at the time of his retirement—at an average of 21.78 runs per wicket. He is one of only four bowlers to twice take a hat-trick in Test cricket. Observers in Trumble's day,including the authoritative Wisden Cricketers' Almanack,regarded him as ranking among the great Australian bowlers of the Golden Age of cricket. He was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1897 and the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame,established in 1996,inducted him in 2004.
George Henry Stevens "Harry" Trott was an Australian cricketer who played 24 Test matches as an all-rounder between 1888 and 1898. Although Trott was a versatile batsman,spin bowler and outstanding fielder,"... it is as a captain that he is best remembered,an understanding judge of human nature". After a period of some instability and ill discipline in Australian cricket,he was the first in a succession of assertive Australian captains that included Joe Darling,Monty Noble and Clem Hill,who restored the prestige of the Test team. Respected by teammates and opponents alike for his cricketing judgement,Trott was quick to pick up a weakness in opponents. A right-handed batsman,he was known for his sound defence and vigorous hitting. His slow leg-spin bowling was often able to deceive batsmen through subtle variations of pace and flight,but allowed opposition batsmen to score quickly.
Maurice Leyland was an English international cricketer who played 41 Test matches between 1928 and 1938. In first-class cricket,he represented Yorkshire between 1920 and 1946,scoring over 1,000 runs in 17 consecutive seasons. A left-handed middle-order batsman and occasional left-arm spinner,Leyland was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1929.
George Gibson Macaulay was a professional English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1920 and 1935. He played in eight Test matches for England from 1923 to 1933,achieving the rare feat of taking a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket. One of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1924,he took 1,838 first-class wickets at an average of 17.64 including four hat-tricks.
Darren Ian Stevens is an English cricketer. An all-rounder,he bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-pace. Since his debut in first-class cricket he has played county cricket for Leicestershire and Kent,as well as featuring for the England Lions and winning the Bangladesh Premier League with both Dhaka Gladiators and Comilla Victorians. Stevens was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in the 2021 edition of the almanack.
1947 was the 48th season of County Championship cricket in England. It is chiefly remembered for the batting performances of Denis Compton and Bill Edrich who established seasonal records that,with the subsequent reduction in the number of first-class matches,will probably never be broken. Their form was key to their team Middlesex winning the County Championship for the first time since 1921,although they were involved in a tight contest for the title with the eventual runners-up Gloucestershire,for whom Tom Goddard was the most outstanding bowler of the season. Compton and Edrich were assisted by the fact that it was the driest and sunniest English summer for a generation,ensuring plenty of good batting wickets.
A cricket team representing England toured Australia in the 1932–33 season. The tour was organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club and matches outside the Tests were played under the MCC name. The tour included five Test matches in Australia,and England won The Ashes by four games to one. The tour was highly controversial because of the bodyline bowling tactics used by the England team under the captaincy of Douglas Jardine. After the Australian tour was over,the MCC team moved on to play in New Zealand,where two further Test matches were played.
Charles Augustus Ollivierre was a Vincentian cricketer who represented the West Indies in matches before they attained Test match status. Born in St Vincent,Ollivierre initially played first-class cricket for Trinidad;he was selected to tour England with the West Indies team in 1900. He later qualified to play first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1901 and 1907,becoming the first black West Indian to play for an English county. Ollivierre was reasonably successful in county cricket and had a reputation as a stylish batsman. However,he dropped out of first-class cricket after 1907 owing to eye trouble.
Adam Charles Hilton Seymour is a former English cricketer who played for a variety of teams in his 12-year career;most of his games were for Essex and Worcestershire.
George Cyril Perkins was an English cricketer. Perkins was a right-handed batsman who bowled both slow left-arm orthodox and left-arm medium pace. He was born in Wollaston,Northamptonshire. On 4 June 2011 he became the 13th former first-class player to reach 100 years of age,and the fourth county cricketer to do so. Following the death of Syd Ward in January 2010,Perkins held the distinction of being the oldest living first-class cricketer.
George Alphonso Headley OD,MBE was a West Indian cricketer who played 22 Test matches,mostly before the Second World War. Considered one of the best batsmen to play for the West Indies and one of the greatest cricketers of all time,Headley also represented Jamaica and played professional club cricket in England. West Indies had a weak cricket team through most of Headley's playing career;as their one world-class player,he carried a heavy responsibility and the side depended on his batting. He batted at number three,scoring 2,190 runs in Tests at an average of 60.83,and 9,921 runs in all first-class matches at an average of 69.86. He was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1934.
Richard Mayes,known as Dicky Mayes,was an English professional cricketer who played 80 first-class cricket matches for Kent County Cricket Club between 1947 and 1953. Mayes,who was considered a stylish batsman,later coached cricket and played for Suffolk County Cricket Club. He had served in World War II.
