John Witchel is an American entrepreneur, NCAA and Pac-10 swimming champion (both as a team member and individually), two-time Pan American Games gold medal winner, and two-time Goodwill Games gold medal winner. [1] He was the co-founder and CTO of Prosper Marketplace, America's first peer-to-peer lending marketplace, and the co-creator flash mob computing. He is the co-founder and current CEO of King Energy.

Early life and education

John Witchel was born in New York City. He attended Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Stanford University in 1990, and an M.S. in Computer Science from University of San Francisco in 2004.

An accomplished competitive swimmer, Witchel was a member of the U.S. National Swimming Team from 1985 through 1990, competing for the United States in the Goodwill Games (1986), the Pan American Games (1987), and the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (1989). [2] He won the Pac-10 Swimming Championships 200 Freestyle three times as an individual. [3] He was a member of the Stanford University 1987 NCAA Swimming Championship team and won the 500 Freestyle in 1988 at the NCAA Division I Championships. [3]

Witchel competed at the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Israel, winning a silver medal in the 200 m freestyle. [4]

Career

XCom Corp

Witchel founded XCom Corp in September 1994 as an early web development shop in San Francisco, California. XCom was acquired by USWeb in 1996 prior to going public in 1997. [5]

Prosper Marketplace

Witchel co-founded Prosper Marketplace in 2004 with Chris Larsen. He was the Chief Technology Officer and lead architect of the system. Prosper was the first peer-to-peer lending marketplace which allowed individuals to lend and borrow money directly from each other using a Dutch auction-like system. Witchel left the company prior to the 2008 SEC cease and desist order against Prosper.

Common Assets

In 2014, Witchel co-founded Common Assets as the Chief Technology Officer; it was acquired by SolarCity. [6] Common Assets was the underlying infrastructure for SolarCity's Solar Bond program. SolarCity's Solar Bonds were the first such product to be nationally registered. After the Tesla acquisition of SolarCity, Tesla discharged most of its solar bonds ahead of the maturity date, paying back all the principal with interest for the life of the bond. [7]

GitPrime, Inc.

Witchel helped launch GitPrime, an early software engineering analytics company, acquired by Pluralsight in 2019. [8] Initially as the first investor and board member, and then as president, Witchel was responsible for strategy and product design.

Board Work

Witchel was a board member and early investor in Shopatron from 2010 to 2015 (acquired by Vista Equity Partners) and UserTesting from 2012 to 2019. He is currently a board member of Wunder Capital, a Boulder, Colorado-based commercial solar financier, and La Plata Electric Association, [9] a member-owned, not-for-profit, electric distribution cooperative in Southwest Colorado. He was previously an advisor to Credit Karma [10] and CrowdStreet. [11]

Scott Daniel Goldblatt is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist who specialized in freestyle events. While swimming primarily in the lead position of the 4 x 200 freestyle relay, Goldblatt took a gold and silver in the 2000, and 2004 Olympics and a silver and bronze medal in the 2001 and 2003 World Aquatics Championships. He also performed well in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel, winning several medals.

John Clifford Moffet is an American former swimmer who competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, having also been selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics that were ultimately boycotted by the United States. In 1985 he won three gold medals at both the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and the Summer Universiade. In 1986, he concluded his collegiate career, after winning five NCAA Division 1 Championships, and moved into the entertainment industry. Andrew Douglas Gemmell is an American competition swimmer who specialized in long-distance freestyle events. He swam for the University of Georgia, helping then to place 5th in the NCAA in 2014, and was a member of the 2012 United States Olympic Team, where he competed in the 1,500-meter freestyle event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. At the Olympics, he finished ninth with a time of 14:59:05, missing the semi-finals by one place. He took several distance swimming medals, with a gold at the 5 km team event in the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, and took medals at the Pan Pacific Championships in 2014 and the Pan American Games in 2015 in the 1500 m, 5 km and 10 km events.

Lisa Rae Jacob is an American former competition swimmer who won two gold medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Siobhan Trichelle Cropper is a 2-time Olympian and swimmer from Trinidad and Tobago, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Cropper represented Trinidad and Tobago in two editions of the Olympic Games, and eventually captured the 100 m butterfly title at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She also holds three Trinidadian records in a sprint freestyle and butterfly double, two NCAA championship titles and fourteen All-American honors, while attending Stanford University.

Simone Ashley Manuel is an American professional swimmer specializing in freestyle events. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she won two gold and two silver medals: gold in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter medley, and silver in the 50-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. In winning the 100-meter freestyle, a tie with Penny Oleksiak of Canada, Manuel became the first Black American woman to win an individual Olympic gold in swimming and set an Olympic record and an American record. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she won a bronze medal as the anchor of the American 4×100-meter freestyle relay team.

Madeline Jane "Maya" DiRado - Andrews is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley events. She attended and swam for Stanford University, where she won NCAA titles in the 200 and 400 meter individual medley in 2014 and graduated with a degree in management science and engineering. At the 2016 US Olympic Trials, DiRado qualified to swim the 200 meter and 400 meter individual medley events, as well as the 200 meter backstroke, at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she won a gold medal in the women's 4x200 meter freestyle relay, a silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley, a bronze medal in the women's 200 meter individual medley, and a gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke. Following the Olympics, DiRado retired from the sport.

Chris Larsen is an American business executive and angel investor best known for co-founding several Silicon Valley technology startups, including one based on peer to peer lending. In 1996, he co-founded the online mortgage lender E-Loan, and during his tenure as CEO E-Loan became the first company to freely provide consumers' FICO credit scores. By 2000, E-Loan's market value was estimated at $1 billion In 2005, Larsen left the company when it was sold to Banco Popular. In 2006, he co-founded Prosper Marketplace and he served as CEO until 2012. Later in 2012, he co-founded the company Ripple Labs, Inc., which developed Ripple, software that enables the instant and direct transfer of money between two parties.

Zach Harting is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle events. He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. He competed in the men's 200 metre butterfly at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. In 2021, he qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 200m Butterfly.
