Johnny Nansen (born February 28, 1974) [1] is a Samoan-born, former American football linebacker and the current co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Texas Longhorns.

Early life

Nansen was born on February 28, 1974, in Apia, Samoa and lived in Laulii, American Samoa early in his childhood. Nansen moved to the mainland United States at the age of 14. [2]

Playing career

Nansen played football at Jordan High School in Long Beach, California and went on to play college football at Washington State University, where he was on the team from 1992 to 1996. [2] After lettering on the football team for three years, Nansen earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1997. [1]

Coaching career

Early Coaching Career

Nansen began coaching in 1998, serving as defensive coordinator for Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, California. The following year, Nansen served as a graduate assistant for the Louisville Cardinals and worked with the defensive line. He then served a one-year stint at Montana State, followed by a four-year stint at Idaho State, where he coached cornerbacks from 2001 to 2002 and the entire secondary in 2003.

Idaho

Nansen's first Division I-A job was with the Idaho Vandals. Nansen spent five seasons (2004–2008) at Idaho; he coached the linebackers from 2004 to 2006 and the defensive line from 2007 to 2008. He also served as special teams coordinator for his entire tenure there. [3]

Washington

Nansen returned to the Power Five with a five-season stint at Washington. He coached the defensive line from 2009 to 2011 and the running backs from 2012 to 2013; he was also in charge of special teams during those five years. [3] Washington played in four bowl games while Nansen was there and produced a top 20 rushing offense during his final year there.

USC

Nansen spent the next six seasons of his coaching career at USC. He served as assistant head coach from 2014 to 2018, and he also coached running backs from 2014 to 2015, linebackers from 2016 to 2018, and inside linebackers in his final year at USC in 2019. [1] In 2018 he was nominated for the Broyles Award. [4]

UCLA

In 2020, Nansen was hired as the defensive line coach at UCLA, following the departure of the Bruins' defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase to Boston College. [3] [5]

Arizona

In December 2021 he was named the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Wildcats under Jedd Fisch to replace Don Brown. [6] [7]

Texas

In January 2024, [8] Nansen joined the Longhorns as a co-defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach, reuniting with Steve Sarkisian. Sarkisian and Nansen had previous work experience together at Washington and USC.

The 2010 UCLA Bruins football team represented the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the 2010 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Coached by third-year head coach Rick Neuheisel, they opened the season on the road against the Kansas State Wildcats on September 4, 2010. The next three games were against ranked opponents, and after a road win at #7 (AP) Texas, expectations for the Bruins dampened by their 0–2 start began to rise again. The team, coached by fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, was a member of the North Division of the Pac-12 Conference. The Huskies played their home games at CenturyLink Field in Seattle due to renovations at their normal on-campus home of Husky Stadium, also in Seattle. They finished the season 7–6, 5–4 in Pac-12 play to finish in fourth place in the North Division. They were invited to the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas where they were defeated by Boise State.

After playing the previous 12 seasons in the Mountain West Conference, this was Utah's first season in the new Pac-12 Conference in the South Division. Manuel Alberto Diaz II is an American football coach who is the head football coach at Duke University. He served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Pennsylvania State University from 2022 to 2023 and as the head football coach at the University of Miami from 2019 to 2021. Diaz previously worked as the head coach for Temple University and as an assistant football coach at Mississippi State University, Louisiana Tech University, the University of Texas at Austin, Middle Tennessee State University, North Carolina State University, and Florida State University.

Anthony Dewayne White II is an American football coach and former linebacker who is currently the defensive coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He played three seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member of the Ottawa Renegades and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before getting into coaching.

Donte Antonio Williams is an American football coach who is the defensive backs coach at the University of Georgia. He previously served as USC's associate head coach under Clay Helton, and he became USC's interim head coach on September 13, 2021, after Helton was fired. After leading the Trojans for the final 10 games of the 2021 season, Williams remained at the school on the staff of new head coach Lincoln Riley. A coach with stints at Oregon, Nebraska, Arizona, and San Jose State, Williams has established himself as one of the nation's top college football recruiters.

Tyler Stockton is an American college football coach and former player who serves as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Boise State University. He spent four years on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, where he played part of one season as a defensive lineman. He spent time coaching at the University of Connecticut, Western Illinois University and Ball State University before arriving at Boise State.
