Jolly is an unincorporated community in eastern Newton County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. [1] A variant name was "Jollification". [2] The community is on Capps Creek approximately eight miles west-southwest of Monett in adjacent Barry County and five miles southwest of Pierce City in southwest Lawrence County. [3]
A post office called Jolly was established in 1898, and remained in operation until 1903. [4] Jolly was named after the proprietor of a nearby watermill. [5] Jolly Mill, built on Capps Creek in 1848, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [6]
The historic mill community is the centerpiece of the privately funded "Jolly Milly Park", open to the public. [6]
Thornfield is an unincorporated community in Ozark County, Missouri, United States. It is located 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Gainesville, on Route 95 at the Little North Fork of the White River on the edge of the Mark Twain National Forest between Wasola to the northeast and Longrun to the southwest. Jolly Mill was built on Capps Creek at Jollification, Berwick Township, Newton County, Missouri, United States in 1848 by Thomas Isbell and his son John to serve as a whiskey distillery. Jolly Mill was named for the local Jolly family. The mill also served as a grist mill, and continued to operate in that capacity until 1975. Due to the flood in late December 2015, the park was heavily damaged.
