Joseph John Morrow CVO CBE KC DL FRSE [1] (born 12 December 1954),is the current Lord Lyon King of Arms. [2] He was appointed on 17 January 2014 [3] and,sworn of office on 27 February before the Lord President of the Court of Session, [4] as Lord Lyon,Morrow took part in the Coronation of Charles III and Camilla in 2023. [5]
A member of the Faculty of Advocates,Morrow took silk in September 2015. [6] In 2008 he was appointed President of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland (demitted office October 2019). [7] He has previously served as Her Majesty's Commissioner for the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland (1999–2006),as a First-Tier Tribunal Judge (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) (2002–2013),and as President of the Additional Support Needs Tribunals for Scotland (2010–2014). [8]
In 2009,Morrow was appointed as Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Dundee, [9] having served as a Labour councillor for the Maryfield ward until that year. [10] He held the positions of Convenor of the Economic Development Committee,Convenor of the Dundee Waterfront Development Board,and was Deputy Lord Provost during his time as an elected member. [11]
Formerly Chaplain of Glamis Castle and Chancellor of the Diocese of Brechin,Morrow now serves as an Honorary Canon of St Paul's Cathedral,Dundee. [12]
He was a Freemason who from 2004 to 2005 served as the 108th Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. [13] In March 2018 he was appointed as the First Grand Principal of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland. [14] On October 26,2023,he was elected to a further term as the Grand Master Mason and was installed into this role in November 2023. It was announced on September 17,2024 that he had resigned as Grand Master Mason and was stepping back from all Masonic duties with effect from September 16,2024,citing personal reasons as the cause. [15]
Appointed Commander of the Order of St John (CStJ) in 2012, [16] in December 2015 he was promoted Knight of Justice of the Order of St John (KJStJ). [17] [18] In 2016 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Edinburgh Napier University.
In 2020,Morrow was appointed Honorary Colonel of 2 (City of Dundee and Highland) Signal Squadron,a sub-unit of 32nd Signal Regiment,a Royal Signals Army Reserve based in Dundee and Aberdeen. [19]
Morrow's interests include ecclesiastical history,the practical application of ceremonial to state,civil,military and ecclesiastical areas of Scottish life,together with over thirty years' experience in the field of heraldry.
The Right Honourable the Lord Lyon King of Arms,the head of Lyon Court,is the most junior of the Great Officers of State in Scotland and is the Scottish official with responsibility for regulating heraldry in that country,issuing new grants of arms,and serving as the judge of the Court of the Lord Lyon,the oldest heraldic court in the world that is still in daily operation.
William Douglas Cullen,Baron Cullen of Whitekirk is a former senior member of the Scottish judiciary. He formerly served as Lord Justice General and Lord President of the Court of Session,and was an additional Lord of Appeal in the House of Lords prior to the transfer of its judicial functions to the Supreme Court.

A pursuivant or,more correctly,pursuivant of arms,is a junior officer of arms. Most pursuivants are attached to official heraldic authorities,such as the College of Arms in London or the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh. In the mediaeval era,many great nobles employed their own officers of arms. Today,there still exist some private pursuivants that are not employed by a government authority. In Scotland,for example,several pursuivants of arms have been appointed by Clan Chiefs. These pursuivants of arms look after matters of heraldic and genealogical importance for clan members.
The courts of Scotland are responsible for administration of justice in Scotland,under statutory,common law and equitable provisions within Scots law. The courts are presided over by the judiciary of Scotland,who are the various judicial office holders responsible for issuing judgments,ensuring fair trials,and deciding on sentencing. The Court of Session is the supreme civil court of Scotland,subject to appeals to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,and the High Court of Justiciary is the supreme criminal court,which is only subject to the authority of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on devolution issues and human rights compatibility issues.
Clan Nicolson is a Lowland Scottish clan. The clan claims descent from an Edinburgh lawyer who lived in the 16th century and from a distinguished line of Aberdeen merchants who preceded him. During the mid-1980s David Nicolson,4th Baron Carnock was recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms as the chief of Clan Nicolson. Around the same time,a Nicolson who claimed descent from the Highland clan of "Nicolsons" historically centred on Skye,petitioned the Lord Lyon King of Arms to be recognised as chief of his own clan. The Lord Lyon King of Arms accepted this man's petition on the condition he took the surname MacNeacail. In consequence there are two Scottish clans with similar names—the lowland Clan Nicolson and the highland Clan MacNeacail.
The Order of Mark Master Masons is an appendant order of Freemasonry that exists in some Masonic jurisdictions,and confers the degrees of Mark Mason and Mark Master.
The Grand Lodge of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of Scotland is the governing body of Freemasonry in Scotland. It was founded in 1736. About one third of Scotland's lodges were represented at the foundation meeting of the Grand Lodge.

George Alexander Way of Plean CStJ is a Scottish Sheriff and former Procurator Fiscal of the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland. In November 2015,it was announced that he was to be the first Scottish Sheriff to be appointed a member of the Royal Household in Scotland as Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary at the Court of the Lord Lyon. In December 2017,he was promoted to Carrick Pursuivant in Ordinary and then to Rothesay Herald in 2024. In 2020,he was appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Brechin. In June 2021,he was appointed as Genealogist of the Priory of Scotland in the Most Venerable Order of St.John.
Sir James Balfour Paul was the Lord Lyon King of Arms,the officer responsible for heraldry in Scotland,from 1890 until the end of 1926.

William David Hamilton Sellar,MVO,FRHistS,FSA (Scot),FRHSC (Hon) was a legal historian who served as Lord Lyon King of Arms from 2008 to 2014.
