Dentistry, also known as dental medicine and oral medicine, is the branch of medicine focused on the teeth, gums, and mouth. It consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, management, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the mouth, most commonly focused on dentition as well as the oral mucosa. Dentistry may also encompass other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular joint. The practitioner is called a dentist.

It is one of 12 dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA), Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. The ADA defines it as "the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes."

The Texas A&M University School of Dentistry, located in Dallas, Texas, is the dental school of Texas A&M University and is a component of Texas A&M Health. It has gone through six different name changes since its founding in 1905, as the State Dental College.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">McGill University Faculty of Dentistry</span>

The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences is one of the constituent faculties of McGill University. It became established as a constituent of McGill University in 1904 as the McGill Dental School, a department in the McGill University Faculty of Medicine until becoming its own faculty in 1920. In 2022, the Faculty of Dentistry was renamed as the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences to reflect the diversity of research conducted in the Faculty that goes beyond the dental chair. The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, often abbreviated CDM, is one of the twenty graduate and professional schools of Columbia University. It is located at 630 West 168th Street in Manhattan, New York City. According to American Dental Education Association, CDM is one of the most selective dental schools in the United States based on average DAT score, GPA, and acceptance rate. In 2014, 2,029 people applied for 80 positions in its entering class. The median undergraduate GPA and average DAT score for successful applicants in 2020 were 3.62 and 22.8, respectively.

There is a long history of women in dentistry. Women are depicted as assistant dentists in the middle ages. Prior to the 19th-century, dentistry was largely not yet a clearly defined and regulated profession with formal educational requirements. Individual female dentists are known from the 18th-century. When the profession was regulated in the 19th-century, it took a while before women achieved the formal education and permission to engage in dentistry.

The International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering research in Paediatric dentistry. It was established in 1991 and is published by John Wiley & Sons on behalf of the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry and British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. It was formed from the merger of the journals of these two societies.

Harpinder Singh Chawla is an Indian dental surgeon, medical researcher and writer, known for his work in pediatric dentistry. Born on 15 March 1945 to Sukhdev Singh and Iqbal Kaur Chawla in Amritsar, the temple town in the Indian state of Punjab, he graduated in Dentistry from the Government Dental College and Hospital, Amritsar in 1967. He did his post graduation in the speciality of pedodontics and preventive dentistry from the same college in 1970. He joined Institute of Medical Education and Research in 1970.He started his career as a registrar at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh in 1970 and worked in several capacities such as lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor and professor and is the incumbent Head of the Oral Health Science Center of PGIMER.

Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering dental public health and the application of epidemiology to dentistry. It was established in 1973 and is published by John Wiley & Sons. The editor-in-chief is Professor Sarah R Baker. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2020 impact factor of 3.383, ranking it 26th out of 91 journals in the category "Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine" and 69th out of 203 in the category "Public, Environmental & Occupational Health".

Rade D. Paravina is a Serbian-American professor at School of Dentistry (UTSD), University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He serves as the director of the Houston Center for Biomaterials & Biomimetics and holds the Ralph C. Cooley DDS, Distinguished Professorship in Biomaterials.
