The Journal was placed as the most highly ranked of any of the clinical geriatric journals in 2012 with an impact factor of 5.302 and immediacy index of 1.343. [1] The increase in the number of issues together with the online only publications has led to a major increase in the denominator for calculating the 2013 impact factor, which fell to 4.781 [2] but still gave JAMDA the second highest impact factor of all the clinical geriatric journals. In 2013, JAMDA also had the highest immediacy index of 1.483 [2] among all the clinical geriatric journals. In 2017, the journal's impact factor was 5.325.

History

AMDA was established in 1978 by James Patee and herman Gruber near Hilton Head, Georgia. In 1988 it moved to Washington, DC. It has developed a Certified Medical Director program. It produces JAMDA (first known as the Annals of Long term Care, then renamed the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association in 2000. The first Editor-in-Chief was Dan Osterweil, MD. The 2nd Editor-in-Chief is John E. Morley, MB, BCh, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. The current Editors-in-Chief are Philip Sloane, MD, MPH and Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. The Journal has an international editorial board.

Sarcopenia is a type of muscle loss that occurs with aging and/or immobility. It is characterized by the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength. The rate of muscle loss is dependent on exercise level, co-morbidities, nutrition and other factors. The muscle loss is related to changes in muscle synthesis signalling pathways. It is distinct from cachexia, in which muscle is degraded through cytokine-mediated degradation, although both conditions may co-exist. Sarcopenia is considered a component of frailty syndrome. Sarcopenia can lead to reduced quality of life, falls, fracture, and disability.

Ignatz Leo Nascher an Austrian-American doctor and gerontologist. He coined the term "geriatrics" in 1909. Born in Vienna, Nascher immigrated to the United States at a young age. His ideas on geriatrics, published in the New York Medical Journal, helped lay the groundwork for the modern study of ageing and elder care.

Albert Siu is an internist and geriatrician and the Ellen and Howard C. Katz Chairman and Professor of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He is also the director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in The Bronx, a senior associate editor of Health Services Research, a senior fellow of the Brookdale Foundation and a former trustee of the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

The European Respiratory Society, or ERS, is a non-profit organization with offices in Lausanne, Brussels and Sheffield. It was founded in 1990 in the field of respiratory medicine. The organization was formed with the merger of the Societas Europaea Physiologiae Clinicae Respoiratoriae and the European Society of Pneumology. The organization's membership is made up of medical professionals and scientists working in the area of respiratory medicine.

Methods of Information in Medicine is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research in medical informatics. It is an official journal of the International Medical Informatics Association, the European Federation for Medical Informatics, and the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology. It is the oldest and longest running journal in its field.

AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, commonly called AMDA and previously called AMDA – Dedicated to Long Term Care Medicine and American Medical Directors Association, is a medical specialty professional organization with a focus on providing long-term care.

Sidney Katz, MD was a pioneering American physician, scientist, educator, author, and public servant who developed the Index of Independence of Activities for Daily Living (ADLs) in a career spanning more than sixty years. He made several other advances in geriatric care, including the U.S. Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987, which established basic rights for nursing home residents. Katz received several public and private awards, including the Maxwell A. Pollak Award (1993) and the American Geriatrics Society’s (AGS) Foundation for Health in Aging (2001). The AGS award was also won by former US President Jimmy Carter and poet Maya Angelou.

George T. Grossberg is the Samuel W. Fordyce professor and director of Geriatric Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He is a past president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and of the International Psychogeriatric Association. He is a member of the AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. Dr. Grossberg is a consistent awardee of America's Best Doctors for his work as a board certified geriatric psychiatrist and exceptional research on Alzheimer's disease.

Undurti Narasimha Das shortly Undurti N. Das and U. N. Das is an Indian clinical immunologist, endocrinologist and the founder president and chief executive officer of UND Life Sciences. Additionally, he serves as the Chief Medical Officer and the Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Asha Nutrition Sciences, Inc. An elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Das is known for his researches in the fields of Immunology, Endocrinology and Rheumatology. He holds a number of patents for his work The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1992.

Leslie S. Libow is Clinical Professor of Medicine and of Geriatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He previously was Greenwall Professor of Geriatrics and Adult Development at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 1982 to 2011 and Chief of Medical Services at the Jewish Home and Hospital from 1982 to 2004. Libow is an authority on internal and geriatric medicine and is also known for creating the field of Geriatric Medicine in America.
