Julian "Jules" De Martino (born 16 July 1967)[ citation needed ] is an English musician and a member of the pop duo The Ting Tings. [1]
De Martino was born in West Ham, the son of Northern Irish mother, Rosemary (née Middleton), and Italian father, Benito De Martino. [2] Jules has one older sister, Maria. He began playing drums at the age of 13. [1]
When he was 17, De Martino was the drummer and songwriter in a band called Babakoto (the babakoto is a rare lemur from Madagascar), [3] who once played as a backing group for Bros [4] and released a single at the end of 1987 called "Just to Get By", which failed to chart. [5]
After Babakoto broke up De Martino became the lead singer in another indie band called Mojo Pin, named after the first song on Jeff Buckley's 1994 album Grace . Mojo Pin released two singles, "You" in 1995 and "My Imagination" in 1996.
In March 2001 Katie White's father David White brought in De Martino as a songwriter and he wrote four songs for her group TKO (Technical Knock Out). [6]
De Martino moved to Manchester and formed a band with Katie White and DJ Simon Templeman [7] which they called Dear Eskiimo (often misreported as Dead Eskimo). The name was intended to be as nomadic, tribal and independent as possible. There were already several bands called Eskimo but De Martino, who wrote the lyrics, wanted his songs to tell good stories as if in a letter, hence 'Dear Eskiimo' with the odd spelling of 'eskimo" with two 'I"s to make it stand out. [8] Their first performance was as a support between two rock bands. They were signed up by Mercury Records at the end of 2004. Creative differences and the management style of the record label caused them to split up. [9]
In 2007, De Martino and White started a duo with White on vocals, guitar and bass drum and De Martino on vocals, drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards. They started writing songs together and performing short concerts. White was working in a boutique with a Chinese girl called Ting Ting, which sounds like Mandarin Chinese for band stand (亭) and White used it as name for the band. [1] One transliteration of the band's name in Japanese is a slang word for penis (wikt:ちんちん). [10] The Ting Tings started by playing for private parties at the Islington Mill arts centre in Salford and their debut album, We Started Nothing , was released on 19 May 2008. [9]
In a February 2022 BBC interview, De Martino and White spoke of their 20-month-old daughter and personal relationship: "The pair have previously avoided saying whether they are romantic as well as musical partners. 'We never particularly spoke about it,' the singer says. 'We always wanted to keep it quite separate from the music, but it's quite hard when you have literally a mini person. We've been together a long time now.'" [11]

Joel Quartermain is an Australian guitarist, back-up singer, recording drummer and pianist of the band Eskimo Joe. He spent a lot of his childhood focused on radio and tapes. In 1989, he moved to Perth, Western Australia, where he attended Hollywood Senior High School. Quartermain started playing in bands from the age of 12, forming an outfit called Hollywood Boulevard, shifting from keyboards to guitar along the way. This band then evolved into a funk band called Carpet, which consisted of Quartermain on guitar, bassist Simon Leach and Simon's brother Stuart on drums. They were subsequently joined by Kavyen Temperley on vocals, changing the name of the band again to Freud's Pillows. As Freud's Pillow they released an EP, Pleasure Puppy in 1997. Despite their modest popularity, Quartermain and Temperley were unhappy with the style of music being played by the band. Quartermain started wearing You Am I T-shirts in protest. Meanwhile, Temperley was jamming on a side project with former school friend Stuart MacLeod, who had co-written some of the songs for Freud's Pillow. The two unsuccessfully auditioned a number of drummers to join them eventually settling on Quartermain, the guitarist in Freud's Pillow, who they concluded was more musical than any other drummers they had auditioned.
We always used to say in interviews that we liked Joel because he couldn't play the drums. Of course he can, but he didn't play drums like a drummer. He wasn't piss-farting around on a high-hat.

Sounds from Nowheresville is the second studio album by English indie pop duo the Ting Tings, released on 24 February 2012 by Columbia Records. It was by preceded the lead single "Hang It Up", which was released on 27 December 2011. Although their 2010 single "Hands" was originally reported not to appear on the album, the duo confirmed on Twitter that it would appear on the deluxe edition of the album. The band revealed that they scrapped an entire album after "stumbl[ing] on this new sound" during a visit to Spain.
