Julia Ratti (born 1969) is an American politician who served as a member of the Nevada Senate from 2016 to 2021. She represented the 13th district,which covers parts of Washoe County,including much of Sparks and Reno.
Ratti was born in Reno,Nevada. [1] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in photography and journalism from the University of Nevada,Reno and a Master of Science in non-profit administration from the University of San Francisco in 2004. [2]
In 2008,Ratti was elected to the Sparks City Council,and reelected in 2012. [3] She decided not to run for reelection to the Council in 2016 in order to run for the Senate in a special election to replace Senator Debbie Smith,who had died. [4] [5] [6]
In September 2016,Ratti was appointed to the Senate in order to replace Smith. [2] [3] [7] [8] She won election to the seat in November 2016. [9]
During the 2017 legislative session,she served as chair of Senate Committee on Revenue and Economic Development and vice chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Resources. [10]
Ratti resigned from the Senate on November 19,2021. [11]
Ratti is married to James Cavanaugh. [12]

Washoe County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census,the population was 486,492,making it Nevada's second-most populous county. Its county seat is Reno. Washoe County is included in the Reno,NV Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Nevada's 2nd congressional district is a congressional district that includes the northern third of the state. It includes most of Lyon County,all of Churchill,Douglas,Elko,Eureka,Humboldt,Lander,Pershing,Storey,Washoe,and White Pine counties,as well as the state capital,Carson City. The largest city in the district is Reno,the state's third largest city. Although the district appears rural,its politics are dominated by Reno and Carson City. As of 2017,over 460,000 people reside in Washoe County alone,totaling about two-thirds of the district's population. It is the richest congressional district in the state of Nevada. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of R+8,it is the only Republican-leaning congressional district in Nevada.
The Nevada Senate is the upper house of the Nevada Legislature,the state legislature of U.S. state of Nevada,the lower house being the Nevada Assembly. It currently (2012–2021) consists of 21 members from single-member districts. In the previous redistricting (2002–2011) there were 19 districts,two of which were multimember. Since 2012,there have been 21 districts,each formed by combining two neighboring state assembly districts. Each state senator represented approximately 128,598 as of the 2010 United States census. Article Four of the Constitution of Nevada sets that state senators serve staggered four-year terms.
