Juma Mussa Kitombi (born September 1, 1989), known professionally by his stage name Jux, is a Tanzanian artist and songwriter. [1]

Jux's music is a blend of RnB, Bongo Flava, and Afrobeats, with some of his most popular songs consisting of "NitasubirI," "Fashion Killer," "Sugua," "Juu" and "Nidhibiti", each growing his household name in Tanzania and East Africa. [2]

Since his debut, Jux has collaborated with a variety of African musicians, including Diamond Platnumz, Vanessa Mdee, Joh Makini, Zuchu, Gyakie, Bien, Marioo, and many others.

Early life

Born in Dar es Salaam, Jux's interest in music began when he started to rap at the age of 16 to his friends and colleagues. [3]

In 2008, when Jux signed to Tanzanian record label A.M Records, he began to record R&B songs instead.

Since then, he has released several hit songs, including "Sugua" featuring Diamond Platnumz, "Juu" featuring Vanessa Mdee, and "Regina" featuring Otile Brown.

In 2015, he received an award for 'Best R&B Song' at Kili Music Awards, also known as the National Tanzania Music Awards. In 2017, he received an award for the Best East African Music Video at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (2017). [4]

In 2018 and 2019, Jux was nominated for 'Best Male East Africa' at the AFRIMMA awards. [5] [6] He also performed on Coke Studio Africa in 2019. [7]

In 2018, his song "Uzuri Wako" (translation: Your Goodness) was banned by the Tanzanian Communications Regulatory Authority, along with songs from several other artists, including Diamond Platnumz, for going against Tanzanian morals and values. [8]

After numerous singles were released, Jux released his first album The Love Album in 2019, featuring tracks from several artists including Nigerian artist Singah, Diamond Platnumz, Nyashinski, Vanessa Mdee, G Nako, Joh Makini, and others. [9]

Jux released his sophomore album titled King Of Hearts in November 2022 to critical featuring heavyweight collaborations from the likes of Zuchu, Marioo, Mbosso, Terri, Bien, and more. [10]

In 2023, Jux made headlines in Tanzania after releasing his second collaboration with Tanzania's leading singer, Diamond Platnumz titled 'Enjoy'. [11] The song, which is a blend of Bongo Flava and Amapiano, was welcomed with mixed reviews as critics noted the song's resemblance to Spyro's "Who Is Your Guy". The song was later taken down from YouTube after Congolese singer Sapologuano Odenumz claimed copyrights [12] [13] [14]

Personal life

Jux's six-year relationship with fellow Tanzanian artist Vanessa Mdee was widely publicized. During this time, they toured together across the region and released several singles.

In 2018, they embarked on the 'In Love with Money' tour, which remains to date one of the Tanzanian's biggest independent tours. The relationship however, came to an end in 2019 shortly after allegations of infidelity began to circulate following the posting of pictures of Vanessa Mdee hugging the American R&B artist Trey Songz. Jux has since been linked to several socialites including Karen Bujulu, a high-profile socialite whom he confirmed he was dating in February 2023. [17]

The African Boy Brand

Jux also has a deep interest in fashion, and established his brand in 2018, for which he curates and designs. The brand is widely available across East Africa, in part due to a production deal he signed in 2019. [18] He later announced that he would be expanding his brand into Kenya over the course of the coming year [19]

Albums

Jux released his debut studio album 'The Love Album' in 2019, consisting of a total of 18 songs. To date the album has received more than 1.3 million streams on, Boomplay, making it one of the most streamed East African R&B albums up to date. [25] The album's lead single 'Sugua' was a hit, amassing more than 10 million views on YouTube. The album was distributed by Africori the largest digital music distribution company in Sub-Saharan Africa, a partner of Warner Music Group [26]

In 2022, Jux released his sophomore album titled King Of Hearts, the album has 16 songs featuring some of the biggest in the African music industry such as Bien, Patoranking, Mbosso, Gyakie, Konshens, Zuchu, and more. [27]

Bongo Flava is a nickname for Tanzanian music. The genre developed in the 1990s, mainly as a derivative of American hip hop and traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dansi, with additional influences from reggae, R&B, and afrobeats, to form a unique style of music. Lyrics are usually in Swahili or English, although increasingly from mid 2000s there has been limited use of words from Sub-Saharan African music traditions due to the influence of Afrobeats and Kwaito with their dynamics usage of West African Pidgin English, Nigerian Pidgin or other Creole language.

The 13th edition of the Tanzania Music Awards took place at the Mlimani City Conference Center in Dar es Salaam, on Saturday 14 April 2012. The event was anchored by Vanessa Mdee and Millard Ayo. Two days after the list was released, four-time nominee Dully Sykes announced his withdrawal from the event. After leaving the 2011 Tanzania Music Awards empty-handed, Diamond Platnumz made a return by winning three awards, including Best Male Artist and Best Video.

He is the founder and CEO of Next Level Music. Rayvanny is best known by his song "Kwetu", which introduced him to the world. Rayvanny was mentioned by MTV Base among "Acts To Look Out For" in 2017.

Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) is a Tanzania-based record label founded by musician Diamond Platnumz. WCB's commercial roster includes Diamond Platnumz, Mbosso, Zuchu, Lava Lava, Queen Darleen, and D Voice. The label is headquartered at Mbezi Beach, Dar Es Salaam. The label's Vice President is RJ The DJ, who is also Diamond Platnumz's official DJ, while the official producer of the label is Lizer Classic. In 2017, the WCB Wasafi artists released a joint project titled Zilipendwa, and in 2020, they released their second single titled Quarantine. In 2021, WCB Wasafi signed a publishing and distribution deal with Ziiki and Warner Music Group.

A Boy from Tandale is the third studio album by Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz - following Kamwambie (2010) and Lala Salama (2012). It was released on March 14, 2018, by Universal Music Group. After joining Universal Music Group in 2017, Diamond began working on the songs which would be used on the album. Musically, A Boy from Tandale is an afro-pop, Bongo Flava album that displays influences of music from West of Africa - especially Nigeria.

Zuhura Othman Soud better known by her stage name Zuchu, born is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter born in Zanzibar. She is based in Dar es Salaam and signed to WCB Wasafi record label. She was awarded the Silver Plaque Button by YouTube for hitting 100,000 subscribers within a week. She became the first East African female artist to reach that milestone within a week. She also became the first East African female artist to reach 1 million subscribers on YouTube 11 months later. In 2020, Zuchu was named by AFRIMMA as the Emerging Artist Award winner.

Mbwana Yusuf Kilungi, better known by his stage name Mbosso Khan is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter born in Kibiti, Pwani Region, he is currently based in Dar es Salaam and signed under WCB Wasafi record label. Mbosso is known for his songs "Nadekezwa" and "Hodari" which won Video of the Year at HiPipo Awards 2019. Mbosso released his debut studio album, Definition of Love, in March 2021.
