Early Life Born on the cusp of a new year, Omary Ally Mwanga, known to the world as Marioo, entered the world on 31 December 1995 in Temeke, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His roots trace back to the Wandengereko people of the Pwani region, a heritage that would deeply influence his musical journey. Marioo's childhood was a tapestry of movement and resilience; he spent his early years in Kibiti, Pwani with his grandmother, who played a pivotal role in his upbringing and education. However, life’s challenges led him back to Temeke, where he moved in with his mother after leaving secondary school prematurely.

In Dar es Salaam, Marioo’s path took an unexpected turn. He found himself working as a motor vehicle mechanic at his uncle's garage. Amidst the clanging of metal and the scent of engine oil, Marioo discovered a new passion—music. He began crafting songs, pouring his soul into lyrics and melodies for other artists, marking the inception of his illustrious career.

Career

Marioo’s musical odyssey began humbly as a songwriter. His early works included hits like "Wapo" by Mwasiti, "Banana" by Dogo Janja, "Mchaka Mchaka" by Shilole, "Nampa Papa" by Gigy Money, and "Nabembea" by Ditto. These compositions were not just songs but stepping stones that paved the way for his emergence as a solo artist.

In 2015, the Tanzanian music scene witnessed the birth of a new star with the release of Marioo’s debut single, "Dar Kugumu." The song resonated deeply, capturing the struggles and triumphs of urban life, and cemented Marioo’s place in the vibrant world of Bongo Flava. This was just the beginning. Hits like "Raha," "Inatosha," "Asante," "For You," "Anyinya," "Chibonge," and "Ya Uchungu" followed, each track a testament to his evolving artistry.

The year 2020 was a milestone for Marioo, as he ventured into the Amapiano genre with "Mama Amina," blending it seamlessly with Bongo Flava. The song's success was monumental, earning critical acclaim and a spot among the best Tanzanian songs of the decade. Marioo’s mastery of Amapiano was further evidenced by hits like "Dear Ex," "Bia Tamu," and "Lonely," crowning him as the king of Swahili Amapiano.

In December 2021, Marioo released "Mi Amor," featuring Kenyan sensation Jovial. The song transcended borders, becoming a massive hit with its music video becoming the second most-watched Tanzanian video on YouTube in 2022. Rolling Stone magazine recognised his influence, ranking him 39th in its top 40 Afropop songs of 2022.

Marioo's exceptional talent was acknowledged at the 2022 Tanzanian Music Awards, where he garnered three awards from seven nominations, including Best Bongo Flava Song and Best Male Bongo Flava Artist.

Albums Marioo's debut album, "The Kid You Know," released on 9 December 2022, was a 16-track masterpiece. Featuring collaborations with heavyweights like Rayvanny, Tyla, Harmonize, and Ali Kiba, the album was lauded for its versatility and depth. Critics like NotJustOk and Tanzanian music journalist Charles Maganga hailed it for showcasing Marioo’s ability to traverse genres—from Amapiano to Afrobeats to R&B—while remaining true to his Bongo Flava roots.

In May 2023, the deluxe edition of "The Kid You Know" was unveiled, featuring three additional singles: "Sing," "Tomorrow," and "Tunamjua," further enriching his discography.

Lyrics are usually in Swahili or English, although increasingly from mid 2000s there has been limited use of words from Sub-Saharan African music traditions due to the influence of Afrobeats and Kwaito with their dynamics usage of West African Pidgin English, Nigerian Pidgin or other Creole language.
