Kovoor Ninan Ninan (born 6 September 1946) [1] is a space scientist from India, who has contributed to the development of rocket propellants, polymers and chemical systems for India's space program. He was the Deputy Director [1] of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at ISRO, and later an emeritus professor at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST). [2]
Born on 6 September 1946 to K.I. Ninan and Annamma at Thiruvalla in the erstwhile Travancore, K. N. Ninan did his schooling from SCS High School Thiruvalla. [3] He obtained his bachelor's degree and Masters in Chemistry from Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla in 1966 [1] and Maharaja's College Ernakulam in 1968 [1] respectively, both then affiliated to the University of Kerala. He secured first rank from the university for both his degrees. [1]
While working at VSSC, he earned his doctorate degree in the field of solid state thermal decomposition kinetics from the same university in 1981, under the joint supervision of Dr. Vasant R Gowariker, [4] and Prof. C.G. Ramachandran Nair, then head of the department of Chemistry at University of Kerala.
Ninan joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1968 at its Space Science & Technology Centre [5] (presently VSSC) at Thiruvananthapuram as a trainee under Dr. Vasant Gowariker, Head, Propellant Engineering Division, [5] working to develop indigenous composite solid propellants using the meager facilities available in those days. [6] He superannuated in 2008 as an ‘Outstanding Scientist’ and Deputy Director, VSSC after serving the Space Centre in different capacities as: Propellant Engineer, Head, Analytical & Spectroscopy Division and Group Director, Propellant & Special Chemicals Group. [1] After his superannuation, he served as an emeritus professor at IIST for 5 years. [1]
During his career at ISRO, he has contributed in the areas of analytical sciences and chemical systems for space applications. [1] He has established a modern chemical facility at VSSC and led an R&D team of scientists and engineers engaged in the development of propellants, polymers and chemicals required for the launch vehicles and satellites of the country. [5] The studies of his team of analytical scientists on functionality distribution of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene fuel binder for composite solid propellants and the development of analysis method for the liquid propellant UDMH (1,1-dimethylhydrazine) have been cited in a Wikipedia profile. An outcome of the research on thermal analysis was new equations for kinetic analysis of non-isothermal reactions, cited as "Madhusudhanan-Krishnan-Ninan (MKN) Method. [7] Towards the development of green propellants for ISRO's future rocket and spacecraft propulsion systems, [8] his team developed and patented the processes for making the high energy fuel binder, glycidylazide polymer (GAP) (Indian Patent 207299) and the chlorine free oxidiser, ammonium dinitramide (ADN), the latter in collaboration with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (US patent 6787119). The research of his team on polymers included matrix resins for polymer matrix composites such as cyanate esters and polyether nitrile copolymers.
At IIST, he mentored a team of students who made India's first student-designed sounding rocket, named "Vyom" [9] [10] and guided a research project on sorbents with superior CO2 capture performance.
He has over two hundred and forty publications [1] [11] [12] and 28 patents in his credit [1]
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is an expendable medium-lift launch vehicle designed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was developed to allow India to launch its Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites into Sun-synchronous orbits, a service that was, until the advent of the PSLV in 1993, only commercially available from Russia. He obtained his M.Sc. from Madras University and Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1967. He joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, in February 1968 as chief of analytical facility. He became head of the Propellant Engineering Division in 1976, Group Director Propellants Group in 1986, and Deputy Director in 1989 before retiring in February 1997. After retiring, he became the Honorary Director of DRDO-ISRO-UoP Cells, which coordinates the activities undertaken for ISRO and DRDO at University of Pune. His tenure was over in August 2004 and after that he worked as an editor for two different encyclopaedias. Now he spends his time writing books and doing special guest lectures at universities and colleges in India.
Gaganyaan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft intended to be the formative spacecraft of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. The spacecraft is being designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with rendezvous and docking capabilities. In its maiden crewed mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s largely autonomous 5.3-metric ton capsule will orbit the Earth at 400 km altitude for up to seven days with a two- or three-person crew on board. The first crewed mission was originally planned to be launched on ISRO's HLVM3 rocket in December 2021. As of November 2024, it is expected to be launched no earlier than 2026.
Parivakkam Subramaniam Veeraraghavan is a well known space scientist and rocket technologist of India. He has served as the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and as the Director of ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU), Thiruvananthapuram. One of the most senior scientists at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Veeraraghavan is known for his contributions to launch vehicle technology, especially in the areas of integration & checkout and Inertial Systems of ISROs launch vehicles. Presently, he is holding the honorary position of Prof. Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor in VSSC, ISRO since January 2013.
Nambi Narayanan is an Indian aerospace scientist who worked for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). As a senior official at the ISRO, he was briefly in charge of the cryogenics division. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in March 2019.

Kerala Science Congress is an annual gathering of Kerala-based scientists and scholars organised by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for revitalizing Research and Development activities in Kerala and to identify new talents in scientific research in Kerala. The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, by awarding him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of science and technology. In May 2016, the Government of Kerala appointed MC Dathan as the scientific advisor to chief minister.
The Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE) is an experimental test vehicle for the Indian Space Research Organisation's future ISRO orbital vehicle called Gaganyaan. It was launched successfully on 18 December 2014 from the Second Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, by a LVM3 designated by ISRO as the LVM 3X CARE mission. Total cost of mission was ₹155 crore. Cost of launch vehicle and CARE module was ₹140 crore and ₹15 crore.
Vasant Ranchhod Gowariker was an Indian scientist. He was a director in the Indian Space Research Organization and also the scientific advisor to the Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1993. Gowariker made valuable contributions to the fields of space research, weather and population. He was well known for his monsoon forecast model as he was the first scientist to develop an indigenous weather forecasting model that predicted the monsoon correctly.
The SCE-200 is a 2 MN thrust class liquid rocket engine, being developed to power Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) existing LVM3 and upcoming heavy and super heavy-lift launch vehicles. It is being developed by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) of ISRO, and is expected to have first flight in 2020s.
Madhavan Pillai Ramakrishna Kurup was an Indian rocket scientist and the founder of the first solid rocket propellant plant in India at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. He is known to have contributed to the successful launching of the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) as the director of the VSSC centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 1990.
