Kakahi was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, [1] in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, serving Kakahi. It formally opened on 9 November 1908. [2] The rails were laid south of Piriaka by May 1904 [3] and a daily ballast train was running by October, [4] [2] which also carried passengers. [5] Kakahi Bridge has five spans of 44 ft (13 m) and one of 23 ft (7.0 m) [6] supplied by G. Fraser & Sons of Auckland, which delayed construction to the south. [7] It crosses the Kakahi Stream, [8] which was sometimes called the Waitea River. [9]
An island platform and shelter were built in 1907, extended to 22 ft (6.7 m) x 9 ft (2.7 m) in 1908, with a lobby, urinals and a storeroom, plus a 30 ft (9.1 m) x 20 ft (6.1 m) goods shed. [2] [10] A stockyard was added in 1912 and extended in 1945, but closed on 26 January 1971. The shelter was removed in 1958 and the building on 26 November 1966, though in 1968 a new 12 ft (3.7 m) x 8 ft (2.4 m) weatherboard, lean-to shelter was built for parcels and phones. The passing loop for 31 wagons was extended for 66 in 1937. [2]
Electric block tablet signalling was installed in 1913, [11] a new type of exchanger installed in 1965 and Centralised Traffic Control started on 15 May 1967. [2]
An engine turning triangle was built in 1951/1952 south of the viaduct, but appears to have been disused by 1969. [12]
On Sunday 25 June 1978 Kakahi closed to all traffic, though the loop remains in use. [2]
From Piriaki, through Kakahi, to just south of Ōwhango, the line climbs a hill on the west side of the Whakapapa River, [13] increasing to a maximum gradient of 1 in 50 on the Ōwhango bank. [14] As early as 1906 groynes were added to protect the line from the river and a cutting collapsed. [6] In 1908 it was noted that the hill was slipping, [15] engines were derailed in 1915 [16] 1925 [17] and 1959, [18] trains were delayed in 1918, [19] 1924, [20] 1925, [21] 1926, [22] 1933, [23] [24] 1939, [25] 1940 [26] and 1945 [27] and a length of railway was realigned in 1923. [28] The 1933 disruption was long enough for an advert to refer to the 3/- charge for the bus replacement link. [29]
In November 1904 the Public Works Department set up a mill and a horse tramway to cut kahikatea, mataī, rimu and tōtara from 1,200 acres (490 ha), for sleepers, bridges, etc during the NIMT completion, cutting about 11,000 board feet (26 m3), or superficial feet, a day. [30] [31] [32] [33] About 45 staff worked the mill. [34] It was transferred from PWD to NZR on 30 July 1909 [2] and £3000 was spent on improvements. [35] Electric light was installed in 1912, but in 1914 the tramway was in a bad condition, in 1917 the sawmill was dismantled and in 1921 the sidings were removed. However, in 1955 a siding was provided for Kakahi Timber Co Ltd. [2]
The Whakapapa River in New Zealand forms from streams which trickle off the Whakapapa skifield of Mount Ruapehu and down the western slopes of the mountain. The river passes near Ōwhango, before finally merging with the Whanganui River just east of Kakahi, about 40 km (25 mi) from where it starts, which is in a 100 m (330 ft) deep gorge, at the confluence of the Whakapapaiti and Whakapapanui Streams.
The Stratford–Okahukura Line (SOL) is a secondary railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, between the Marton - New Plymouth Line (MNPL) and the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) Railway, with 15 intermediate stations. It is 144 km (89 mi) long through difficult country, with 24 tunnels, 91 bridges and a number of sections of 1 in 50 grade. Near Okahukura there is an unusual combined road-rail bridge over the Ongarue River, with the one-lane road carriageway below the single rail track. The line is not currently in service for rail traffic and is under a 30-year lease for a tourist venture. In July 2019 KiwiRail's CEO stated that reopening the line was a priority. Minister of Transport Michael Wood announced the government's 10-year plan for rail investment on 6 May 2021, which specifically stated that plans could include re-opening the Stratford to Okahukura line.
Te Kawa railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand, located at Te Kawa.
Ōhaupō railway station was a station located at Ōhaupō on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand. It was the terminus of the line from Auckland from 1878 to 1880 and closed in 1982. Only a passing loop remains.
Te Awamutu was a temporary terminus, serving the border town of Te Awamutu, on the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) in New Zealand from 1880, when the line was extended from Ōhaupō, until 1887, when the line was extended south to Ōtorohanga.

Ohakune railway station is a station on the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT), which serves the town of Ohakune in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand. It is served by KiwiRail's Northern Explorer long distance train between Wellington and Auckland. It was called Ohakune Junction from 10 August 1926 until Raetihi Branch closed in 1968, to avoid confusion with Ohakune Town station on that branch. It was the second highest operating railway station in New Zealand, after National Park.

Raurimu railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk, and in the Manawatū-Whanganui region.
Matapuna had several sidings on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, serving the east Taumarunui suburb on the north bank of the Whanganui River. It was 2.9 km (1.8 mi) north west of Manunui and 2.95 km (1.83 mi) east of Taumarunui. Work was largely complete by May 1903, and freight was handled from 22 June 1903. A fixed signal was placed at the station and a distant at the bridge in 1917 and the ballast pit siding was interlocked by tablet in 1918. A racecourse opened to the south of the bridge in 1916 and some trains served the course on race days, though no platform appears on aerial photos and only the ballast pit was mapped.
Manunui station was on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, serving Manunui. It was 2.9 km (1.8 mi) south east of Matapuna and 4.63 km (2.88 mi) north of Piriaka. Freight was handled from 2 September 1904, though it wasn't until 16 September 1908 that it was listed as having a station yard, formation and fencing and 10 November 1908, when it was described as a 6th class station, with passenger platform, urinals, cart approach, a 30 ft (9.1 m) x 20 ft (6.1 m) goods shed and loading bank. On 24 July 1913 a request for lighting was added. A passing loop originally provided for trains of up to 26 wagons, but was extended to 100 in 1970 and 123 in 1980. By then Caltex had a siding for 11 wagons and a fertiliser store for 15.
Piriaka was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, serving Piriaka. It was 5.27 km (3.27 mi) north of Kakahi and 4.63 km (2.88 mi) south of Manunui. It formally opened on 9 November 1908, though it was renamed from Pirihaka on 25 April 1902 and work was well advanced by 1903, with the rails laid south of Piriaka by May 1904. Goods traffic started on 11 October 1904. By 10 November 1908 a passing loop could take 48 wagons and there was a 6th class station, with water supply, privies and urinals, a 300 ft (91 m) x 20 ft (6.1 m) passenger platform, loading bank, cattle yards and a 30 ft (9.1 m) x 20 ft (6.1 m) goods shed.
Ōwhango was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the village of Ōwhango, which lay to the north of the station. It was 5.64 km (3.50 mi) north of Oio and 9.11 km (5.66 mi) south of Kakahi. The Public Works Department transferred the station to NZ Railways on 9 November 1908, though bush had been felled along the railway route in 1904, by March 1905 a station yard was being formed and by August 1905 it was the railhead, with track laid 4 mi (6.4 km) beyond to the south.
Oio was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the hamlet of Oio, which lay to the north of the station. It was 8.29 km (5.15 mi) north of Raurimu and 5.64 km (3.50 mi) south of Ōwhango. It was one of the many temporary railheads along the route, with work going on from 1904 to 1908.
Mataroa was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the village of Mataroa. Mataroa is part way up a long gradient from Taihape to Waiouru, beginning at 1 in 60, but largely 1 in 70 from Mataroa to Hīhītahi, so that Mataroa is 88 m (289 ft) above Taihape and 110 m (360 ft) below Ngaurukehu.
Karioi was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. A passing loop remains.
Rangataua was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. Like most of the stations on the central part of the NIMT, a large timber trade exploited the native bush until it was largely felled. What is now the small village of Rangataua developed to the south of the station. Just a single track now passes through and virtually nothing remains of the once busy station and workshops.
Horopito was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the small village of Horopito and lies just to the north of two of the five largest NIMT viaducts. It and Pokaka also lay to the south of Makatote Viaduct, the late completion of which held up opening of the station.

Erua was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand. It served the small village of Erua. For a month in 1908 it was the terminus of the line from Auckland. Makatote Viaduct and tramway are about 3 mi (4.8 km) south of Erua.
