Local elections were held in Kakamega County to elect a Governor and County Assembly on 4 March 2013. [1] Under the new constitution, which was passed in a 2010 referendum, the 2013 general elections were the first in which Governors and members of the County Assemblies for the newly created counties were elected.

Kakamega County County in Kenya

Kakamega County is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Kakamega. It has a population of 1,660,651 and an area of 3,033.8 km².

Wycliffe Oparanya Kenyan politician

H.E. Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, EGH is a Kenyan politician, serving as the incumbent governor of Kakamega County and Council of Governors chairperson. He was elected 4 March 2013 and became the first governor of Kakamega County following promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and subsequently in August 2017, for his second term as the governor. He is, therefore, the pioneer Governor of Kakamega County under the devolved system of governance in Kenya that established 47 counties. He was previously Minister of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030 in the government of President Mwai Kibaki. He was appointed on 14 January 2019 as the Council of Governors of Kenya chairperson.

Soita Shitanda was a Kenyan politician. He belonged to New Ford Kenya and was elected to represent the Malava Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya. Soita represented Malava constituency since 1997, after he ousted the then, Minister of Health, Mr. Joshua Angatia in the general election, vying on a Ford Kenya ticket. He was re-elected to parliament in 2002 on the NARC ticket and served as an assistant minister in the office of the president, before he was appointed minister for housing in a cabinet reshuffle in 2005. Mr. Soita was again re-elected in the 2007 parliamentary election and re-appointed Minister for Housing. He died on the afternoon of 24th, May 2016 at Nairobi Hospital.

Nyanza Province was one of Kenya's eight administrative provinces before the formation of the 47 counties under the 2010 constitution. Six counties were organised in the area of the former province.

Sub-Counties of Kenya

Sub-counties are the decentralised units through which county governments of Kenya will provide functions and services. Except for the parts which fall under urban areas, sub-counties will coincide with the constituencies created under article 89 of the Constitution of Kenya. Sub-counties will be headed by a sub-county administrator, appointed by a County Public Service Board.
