Kalamakia cave, situated on the Mani peninsula, is a fossil-bearing cave in Southern Greece that provides insights into Paleolithic habitation, geology, nature, and climate.
Situated at Areopolis--the western coast of the Mani peninsula of Peloponnese, the cave of Kalamakia was inhabited during the Pleistocene, and its archaeological assemblages and remains encouraged discussion among scholars. [1] Systemic excavations of the Kalamakia cave began in 1993, and quintessential findings include faunal remains, raw material, and Neanderthal remains. [2]
The first systematic excavation of Kalamakia was completed by Andreas Darlas and Henry de Lumley, archaeologists who identified the seven stratigraphic units of the site and the specifics for each unit. [3] Specifically, Kalamakia's seven stratigraphical units arranged from earliest deposition to latest consist of the lower stalagmitic floor, the Tyrrhenian beach, the wind-blown dune sands and small broken angular stones, the angular gravel with reddish sandy-clay mix, the scree of large blocks in a red clay matrix, the layered clayey silts, and the upper stalagmitic floor. The Mani peninsula has been affected by tectonic movements throughout its archaeological history, which caused the formation of several platforms on the site. The cave of Kalamakia occupies one of the lowest platforms above sea level; scientific measurements confirm that the site is within ten meters from the shoreline and approximately two meters above the present sea level. [4]
At the entrance, Kalamakia is seven meters wide and eight meters high, and the cave becomes gradually narrower as one begins to probe its insides. [4] Apart from featuring a main gallery, the cave of Kalamakia also has a secondary and a tertiary gallery slightly above the main cave. [4] Kalamakia is twenty meters deep and, despite its great depth, was likely submerged during the Pleistocene for an extended period and later revealed itself, thanks to marine regression. [2]
Researchers have identified by scientific methods that 26669 faunal remains have been found at the cave of Kalamakia; however, among the abundant findings, only 486 were identifiable and can be attributed to specific species. [5] Specifically, examples of fauna found include fossils of large vertebrates, micro-vertebrates, and marine fauna. [4] Furthermore, the majority of faunal remains consist of bone fragments that endured a high degree of fragmentation, although teeth fragments do have a higher resistance, making them available for archaeological interpretation. [5] While most specimens are the bones of Fallow deer and Ibex, some are incorporated into a group named "artiodactyls," which represent approximately 63-93% of all faunal bone remains. [5] Moreover, archaeologists suggest that the assemblage of faunal remains may imply the human exploitation of animals and their surroundings through hunting. [5] Another intriguing finding is that, among the types of animals identified, carnivores are relatively rare, although some remains of red fox were present [5] [2]
Scientific research aimed specifically at the bird remains of the cave of Kalamakia, Darlas and Roger's study concludes the types, or taxa, of birds are extremely diversified given the lower number of remains and the high number of taxa. [1] Among all species of birds identified, Galliformes are the most abundant, and their biological features suggest that the overall climate of Kalamakia was most likely temperate instead of cold. [1]
A completed master's thesis from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki focuses its methodology and interpretation on the molars of Arvicolines, species known for high variation and remarkable adaptive abilities. [2] With geometric morphometrics analysis, it is apparent that the fossil samples of Arvicolines from Kalamakia can be paralleled with those from Northern Greece, indicating a plausible existence of a shared morphology. [2] Moreover, concerning the studied molars, the middle and anterior sectors of the fossil suggest the most diversity, while the posterior part contributes relatively less to the species' evolution. [2]
In regard to the lithic remains found at Kalamakia, original excavators identify most as pieces smaller than 20 mm, and they are usually produced by repeated flaking. [4] The most abundant raw material used for stone tools is fine-grained flints, which can be found near caves during Paleolithic times. [4] The second on the list of abundance is quartz, which is poor in quality, rendering it worthy of producing irregular tools. [4] Furthermore, an intriguing raw material found is green andesite with white spots, which has satisfying quality yet is challenging to collect. [4]
Concerning the generally preferred shapes of stone tools, it is evident that inhabitants produced tools small in size and relatively thin, and archaeological research was able to categorize the tools made since most tools show signs of stylized retouching. [4] Given the inhabitants' elaborate attempts to manufacture stone tools in magnificent amounts, researchers suggest the existence of a "stone industry" at Kalamakia during the Middle Paleolithic period. [6]
Throughout the excavation site, a total of fourteen human remains were found. Neanderthal remains have been discovered, showing that hominids systematically occupied the cave. [2] For instance, a recent study completed by researchers from the University of Crete concludes that the Neanderthals had repeatedly occupied the site, as some occupation periods were short while others were relatively permanent. [6] During their stay, the Neanderthals were preoccupied with innovative efforts toward raw material, a statement supported by the aforementioned discussion of stone remains. [6] Furthermore, this article arrives at the conclusion of studies focused on faunal remains, as it argues that Kalamakia is an attractive site for human habitation due to its temperate climate. [6]

The Mousterian is an archaeological industry of stone tools, associated primarily with the Neanderthals in Europe, and to the earliest anatomically modern humans in North Africa and West Asia. The Mousterian largely defines the latter part of the Middle Paleolithic, the middle of the West Eurasian Old Stone Age. It lasted roughly from 160,000 to 40,000 BP. If its predecessor, known as Levallois or Levallois-Mousterian, is included, the range is extended to as early as c. 300,000–200,000 BP. The main following period is the Aurignacian of Homo sapiens.

The Kents Cavern 4 maxilla is a human fossil consisting of a right canine, third premolar, and first molar as well as the bone holding them together including a small piece of palate. The fossil was found in 1927 at Kents Cavern, a limestone cave in Torquay, Devon, England. The maxilla was uncovered at a depth of 10 feet 6 inches (3.20 m) and was located directly beneath a key ‘granular stalagmite’ at the site, which was used as a datum during excavations undertaken between 1926 and 1941 by the Torquay Natural History Society. The discovery of the KC4 maxilla was important because it became the earliest direct dated anatomically modern human (AMH) fossil yet discovered from a northwestern European site. Moreover the date obtained via a Bayesian statistical-modelling method provides evidence for the coexistence of anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals.
Scladina, or Sclayn Cave, is an archaeological site located in Wallonia in the town of Sclayn, in the Andenne hills in Belgium, where excavations since 1978 have provided the material for an exhaustive collection of over thirteen thousand Mousterian stone artifacts and the fossilized remains of an especially ancient Neanderthal, called the Scladina child were discovered in 1993.
The Obi-Rakhmat Grotto is a Middle Paleolithic prehistoric site that yielded Neanderthal fossils. It is a shallow karst cave near the junction of the Chatkal and Pskem Rivers at the southwestern end of the Talassky Alatau Range in the Tien Shan Mountains, 100 km (62 mi) northeast of Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Trou de l’Abîme also known as La caverne de l'Abîme and Couvin Cave is a karst cave located in Wallonia on the right bank of the Eau Noire river in the center of Couvin, Belgium, in Namur province. During various archaeological excavations of sediment deposits, Mousterian artefacts and a Neanderthal molar were discovered.
Betal Rock Shelter, a karst cave located on the south-eastern edge of the Lower Pivka river valley on a slope just above the road from Postojna to Bukovje is a site where rich cultural sediment layers with remains of stone tools, artifacts, and numerous fossilized bones of contemporary animals were found. Its entrance was formed by the collapse of the 174 m (571 ft) long cave's ceiling, carved out by the waters of the Pivka River.
Okladnikov Cave is a paleoanthropological site located in the foothills of the Altai Mountains in Soloneshensky District, Altai Krai in southern Siberia, Russia. The cave faces south and is located on a Devonian karst escarpment, lying about 14 metres (46 ft) above the left bank of the Sibiryachikha River valley below; the river itself is a tributary of the Anuy River.
The Noisetier Cave, owing its popular name to the Hazel trees that grow in front of its entrance, is located in a mountainside 145 m (476 ft) atop the Vallée d'Aure in the Ardengost commune, Hautes-Pyrénées department in the region Occitania, Southern France. During systematic excavations since 1992 Middle Paleolithic stone tools and artifacts attributed to the Neanderthal Mousterian culture were discovered among numerous faunal remains.
The small Sirgenstein Cave, German: Sirgensteinhöhle is situated 565 m (1,854 ft) above sea level inside the 20 m (66 ft) high Sirgenstein, a limestone rock. The cave sits 35 m (115 ft) above the Ach River valley bottom in the central Swabian Jura, southern Germany. Archaeologist R. R. Schmidt excavated the site in 1906 during which he identified indices of prehistoric human presence. He recorded the complete stratigraphic sequence of Palaeolithic and Neolithic origin. In his 1910 analysis Schmidt inspired future archaeologists with his pioneering concept of including the excavation site within its geographic region, contextualizing it within a wide scientific spectrum and demonstrated valuable results as he correlated the Sirgenstein layer structure to those of prehistoric sites in France. Mammoth ivory beads dating from 39,000 to 35,000 years ago have been uncovered at the cave. Because of its historical and cultural significance and its testimony to the development of Paleolithic art, the cave was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura site in 2017.
The Alepotrypa Cave is an archaeological site in the Mani region of the Peloponnese peninsula. In addition to being inhabited by early farmers, this site was used for burial and cult purposes. Archaeological evidence has revealed that this is one of the largest Neolithic burial sites ever found in Europe. Two adult human skeletons were found at the site from a burial dating to the 4th millennium BC, as well as remains from at least 170 separate persons. Archaeologists are uncertain about the significance of a Mycenaen ossuary, which has been dated to the 2nd millennium BC and appears to have been reburied at Alepotrypa. While there is no direct evidence, it is possible that the ossuary may link Alepotrypa to Tainaron, which was regarded as the entrance to Hades in classical mythology.
Pešturina is a cave in the municipality of Niška Banja in southeast Serbia. It is located southwest of Jelašnica and 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Niš. Artifacts from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods were discovered since the archaeological excavations began in 2006. The remains, identified as the Mousterian culture, were dated from 111,000 BP+ 5,000 to 39,000 BP + 3,000, which makes Pešturina one of the latest surviving Neanderthal habitats. The cave has been nicknamed the "Serbian Atapuerca".
Apidima Cave is a complex of five caves four small caves located on the western shore of Mani Peninsula in Southern Greece. A systematic investigation of the cave has yielded Neanderthal and Homo sapiens fossils from the Palaeolithic era.
