Kallen Pokkudan (born 1937), also known as Kandal Pokkudan, was an Indian environmental activist and writer from Kerala. [1] [2] He was known for his efforts for the protection and proliferation of the mangrove forests in Kerala, since 1989. [3]
Pokkudan was born in 1937 at Iddukkil Thara, a hamlet in the remote village of Ezhom Moola, near Pazhayangadi, in Kannur district in the south Indian state of Kerala in a tribal family to Aringelayan Govindan Parotti and Kallen Vellachi. [4] [5] He had minimal education which extended only up to 2nd standard and he took to communism at the age of 18. He was more aligned to the radical group in the Communist Party of India, was involved in many people's movement and was arrested on many occasions. He was an accused in many cases related to farmers' unrests including a murder case and was incarcerated several times. [4] When the party split in 1964, he took sides with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) but de-aligned from party ranks in the 1980s when he became disenchanted with them. [4]
After his split with the party, Pokkudan spent his time in environmental protection activities, focusing on the protection of the mangrove forests of Kerala. [5] He embarked on a mission to plant mangroves across the coastal waters of Kerala and is reported to have planted over one lakh (100,000) mangrove plants in the state. [6] He founded the Mangrove School and conducted over 500 classes in various parts of the state in an attempt to educate the masses about the ecological importance of mangroves. [7] His last work, Kandal Inangal (Mangrove Species) is a work detailing various species of mangroves found in Kerala. [5] Sthalam, a 2012 film by Siva Prasad, has been made on the life of Pokkudan. [8] He was one of the protagonists of Papilio Buddha , a 2013 feature film by Jayan Cherian, which focuses on the environmental and spiritual aspects of life. [9]
Pokkudan was married to Meenakshi and the couple had three daughters, Pushpalatha, Pushpavalli and Rekha and three sons, Anandan, Raghunath and Sreejith. [4] Sreejith Paithalen, the last born, is a freelance journalist and has ghost written two of his father's books. [10] He died on 27 September 2015, aged 78, [11] at Kannur, succumbing to age related illnesses, [5] his wife preceding him in death, [4] and was cremated at his residence at Pazhayangadi. [12]
Pokkudan had only basic literacy but he published several books, with assistance from others, including two autobiographical works, Ente Jeevitham (My Life) [13] and Kandalkkadukalkkidayil Ente Jeevitham (My Life Among the Mangrove Forests). [14] [15] Kandal Inangal (Mangrove Species) and Chuttachi are two of his other notable works. [4] [5] His life has been documented in a biography, Pokkudan Ezhuthatha Aathmakatha (The Unwritten Autobiography of Pokkudan), written by Thaha Madayi and published by Samakalika Malayalam in 2003. A Malayalam film called Sthalam was made in 2011 based upon the life of Kallen Pokkudan. It was written and directed by Kaviyoor Sivaprasad. [17]
Pokkudan received the P. V. Thampy Memorial Endowment Award in 2001. [18] Two years later, he was awarded the Bhoomi Mitra award followed by the Vana Mitra (Friend of Forests) Award of the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department, in 2006, making him the first recipient of the honour. [5] The Government of Kerala honoured him with the Haritha Vyakthi (Green Personality) Award in 2010. [19] He won the P. S. Gopinathan Nair Environmental Award in 2014. [20] He was also a recipient of the A. V. Abdul Rahman Haji award (2010), Acharya Award from Kannur University and Bala Sahitya Institute Award. [4]
Kannur is one of the 14 districts along the west coast in the state of Kerala, India. The city of Kannur is the district headquarters and gives the district its name. The old name, Cannanore, is the anglicized form of the Malayalam name "Kannur". Kannur district is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode district to the south, Mahé district to the southwest and Wayanad District to the southeast. To the east, the district is bounded by the Western Ghats, which forms the border with the state of Karnataka. The Arabian Sea lies to the west. Paithalmala is the highest point in Kannur District (1,372m). Enclosed within the southern part of the district is the Mahé district of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The district was established in 1957.
Ezhimala, a hill reaching a height of 286 metres (938 ft), is located near Payyanur, in Kannur district of Kerala, South India. It is a part of a conspicuous and isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory, 38 km (24 mi) north of Kannur (Cannanore). The Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala is Asia's largest, and the world's third-largest, naval academy.
Pazhayangadi, is a small township, approximately 23 km (14 mi) north of district headquarters Kannur, 15 km (9.3 mi) south of Payyanur and 14.5 km (9.0 mi) west of Taliparamba in the Indian state of Kerala. In the local language of Malayalam it literally means "Old Market". The town is bounded by the Madayi Hills (Madayippara) on the west and by the Pazhayangadi River on the south. Ezhimala, a range of hills, that is believed to be home to a variety of medical herbs including mrithasanjeevini, and a very ancient recorded history, is situated nearly 8 km west of Pazhayangadi. Pazhayangadi town is spread over Madayi and Ezhome Grama Panchayats. Madayi Hill offers a splendid scene of Ezhimala which means a chain of seven mountains, where the Indian Naval Academy is situated.
Thinakkal Padmanabhan, popularly known as T. Padmanabhan, is an Indian short story writer of Malayalam literature. He is a recipient of several awards including the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala. He declined some of the earlier awards he was selected for which include Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1973), Odakkuzhal Award (1995) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1996). Mahatma Gandhi University conferred on him the honoris causa degree of the Doctor of Letters in 2018. In 2023, he was honoured with the Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian award given by the Kerala Government.
Cherukunnu is a census town in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. Cherukunnu town is located on Valapattanam-Pappinisseri-Pazhayangadi main road, situated to the south of the Pazhayangadi in Kannur District in Kerala.
Kumbakudi Sudhakaran is an Indian politician and president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He was also the former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Kerala. He is currently serving as Member of Parliament (MP), Lok Sabha from Kannur, Kerala and member of Parliamentary Standing Committees on Rural Development and Welfare of OBCs. He represents the Indian National Congress Party. He was also a four-term member in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and represented the Kannur constituency from 1996 to 2009. He was elected as MP of Kannur constituency in 2019 Indian general election and 2024 Indian general election.
Sthalam is a 2011 Malayalam film written and directed by Kaviyoor Sivaprasad, and produced by Mariam Anoop and Rajesh S Nair under the banner of Avagama creations. The film, starring Bala, Shweta Menon, Sudheesh, and Jyothirmayi, and shot in Tiruvalla, is based on the life of environmentalist Pokkudan. Second schedule for Sthalam started at Kannur in India by 26 October 2011. Jyothiramayi plays a deglam role in the film.
Papilio Buddha is an Indian film written and directed by Jayan K. Cherian. The film focuses on the atrocities committed against Dalits, women, and the environment. It features S. P. Sreekumar, David Briggs, and Saritha Sunil while Padmapriya, Prakash Bare, and Thampy Antony play supporting roles. Kerala-based environmentalist Kallen Pokkudan appears in another important role in the film, which also casts 150 Adivasis. The film was completely shot in Wayanad, Kerala and the cinematography was done by M J Radhakrishnan. The story deals with discrimination against landless Dalits and the politics of suppression of their struggle against the upper castes and other powerful elements locally.
The Pappinisseri mangrove theme park is a controversial eco-tourism project on the banks of Valapattanam river in Kannur.
Thaha Madayi is a freelance journalist/writer and biographer from Kerala, India, writing in Malayalam language. He began contributing to Ballapankthi of Mathrubhumi weekly and has gone on to author many articles on significant topics, which appeared in leading Malayalam journals. He was instrumental in making visible Dalits and other marginalized groups through the literary genre of life-writing and has also published his interviews with many celebrities. He has made six documentary films and short films. He has presented cultural programs both on Radio and TV. He wrote the biographies of Kallen Pokkudan, Fabi Basheer, Gemini Shankaran, Mamukkoya, Punathil Kunjabdulla, Eranjoli Moosa, A Ayyappan and Captain Krishnan Nair.
Antony Thekkek, better known as Thampy Antony, is an Indian-American film actor, writer, activist and producer. He is the elder brother of Malayalam actor Babu Antony. As a writer he has published books in Malayalam and English. He is the author of several books such as Koonampara County, Life of Ouso, Lady Biker and Vasco da Gama. As an actor, he is active primarily in Malayalam cinema. He has won Basheer-Amma Malayalam Award for his book Vasco da Gama.
C. V. Balakrishnan is an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. His novels and short stories encompass the emotional issues related to mass culture, sexual politics, fate of the marginalised and institutionalised religions. An author of more than 60 literary works along with a few film scripts and film criticisms, his best known work is the novel Ayussinte Pusthakam. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award thrice and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Book on Cinema in 2002 for Cinemayude Idangal. In 2014, he won the Padmaprabha Literary Award.
Sunil P. Ilayidom is an Indian writer, critic, orator and university professor in Malayalam language. He writes and lectures on politics, literature, art and culture. He has received the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi and is a two-time recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
E. M. Ashraf is a Malayalam writer, film critic and Journalist. He is currently the director of Middle East, Kairali TV. He has written numerous books and articles in Malayalam language, most notably the biographies of veteran Malayalam writers Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and Sukumar Azhikode. His interview with late Indian painter M. F. Husain was published in Malayalam and later translated into Arabic and English.

Eeda (transl. Here) is a 2018 Indian Malayalam-language romance film written, edited and directed by B. Ajithkumar. The film is a modern take on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in the backdrops of political violence in Kannur, north Malabar. Shane Nigam and Nimisha Sajayan play the lead roles. Eeda was produced by Sharmila Rajaa through Delta Studio, in collaboration with Collective Phase One. The executive producers were TRS Muthukumaar, K.J. Ayyappan, and Sukumar Thekkepatt. The film won the John Abraham Award for Best Malayalam Film in 2017.

Jyothibai Pariyadath is a poet, translator,transcriber and blogger in Malayalam language from Palakkad, Kerala, India. Born on 26 April 1965 in Nemmara village in Palakkad district, as seventh child of Anthikkaad Puzhukoloth Krishna Panicker and Nemmara Pariyadath Sathybhama Amma. She did her studies at Pazhayagramam GLP School, Govt.Girls high school Nemmara and NSS college Nemmara. She Completed her graduation in Chemistry and post graduation in sociology and Malayalam.
