G. D. H. Kamal Gunaratne,WWV,RWP,RSP,USP is a retired Sri Lankan army general. He is the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the State Ministry of National Security and Disaster Management. A retired career officer of the Sri Lanka Army,Gunaratne had served as the former Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni,general officer commanding (GOC),53 Division and was a former Deputy Ambassador to Brazil. [1] [2] [3] He was the GOC of the 53 Division which killed the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at Nandikadal,Mullaitivu.
He was born to a family of teachers;his father was a school principal. Educated at Dharmapala Vidyalaya and Ananda College,he joined the army in 1981 as a cadet officer,undergoing basic officer training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy. [4]
After completing his basic training and a commando course,he was commissioned into the Rajarata Rifles as a second lieutenant. Following the disbandment of the Rajarata Rifles,he was one of the initial officers of the newly formed Gajaba Regiment,attached to the 1st Battalion,Gajaba Regiment (1GR) under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Vijaya Wimalaratne and Major Gotabaya Rajapaksa. 1GR was deployed to the Jaffna peninsula between 1983 and 1984 and again 1985 with the escalation of the Sri Lankan Civil War. Serving as a platoon commander,company commander in the Gajaba Regiment,he was promoted to the ranks of lieutenant and captain. In 1987 he took part in the Vadamarachchi Operation and thereafter was deployed to Colombo for internal security duties. He attended the Infantry Young Officers’Course at the School of Infantry and tactics,Pakistan in 1988 and the Junior Command Course at the College of Combat (now the Army War College,Mhow) in 1990. In 1990,he was the officer commanding the Mankulam Army Camp when it came under intense LTTE attack and under orders from the Wanni Headquarters made a successful withdrawal from the besieged camp. In 1991,he was promoted to the rank of major and was appointed Second in Command of the 6th Battalion,GR. He was the officer commanding the Silawathura Army Camp when it came under siege by the LTTE,holding off the LTTE attack for several days until 6GR was relieved by reinforcements. During the siege he was wounded. Following deployment to Weli Oya he was once again seriously wounded. After returning to operational duties,he was transferred to Army Headquarters as a Grade II Staff Officer in the Directorate of Logistics. [4]
In 1994,having been promoted to lieutenant colonel he took command of the 6GR,taking part in the Operation Riviresa until 1997. Thereafter,he served as Commandant at Infantry Training Centre,Grade I Staff Officer at Joint Services Operational Headquarters coordinating the Operation Jayasikurui. In 1999,he attended the Senior Command Course at the College of Combat (now the Army War College,Mhow),where he gained a MPhil at the University of Madras and thereafter attended the Command and Staff Course at the Command and Staff College,Quetta,gaining his psc qualification and Masters in Art and Science of Warfare from the University of Balochistan. As a colonel he was Brigade Commander of the Air Mobile Brigade at the onset of the Eelam War IV and was promoted to the rank of brigadier,he went on to take command of the 55 Division and 53 Division and was promoted to the rank of major general. 53 Division took part in many major battles leading to the final battle at Nandikadal,leading to the death of LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. Some NGO accused 53 Division under Kamal Gunaratne for executions of LTTE cadres,during the heat of the war near Nandikadal in May 2009. [5]
Following the war Gunaratne Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the National Defence College,India (2011) National Defence College,New Delhi,gaining his ndc qualification. He served as adjutant general,Security Forces Headquarters –Wanni,Deputy Ambassador to Brazil and Master General Ordnance at the Army Headquarters from 16 February 2015 to 4 September 2016 before his retirement in 2016. [6] He was also the Colonel of the Regiment of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment and the Gajaba Regiment. [7]
He authored an autobiography named Road to Nandikadal [8] on the war against LTTE, [9] [10] which was the best-selling book of the 2016 Colombo International Book Fair. [11] Post-retirement,Gunaratne became an active supporter of former Defence Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in his presidential campaign during the 2019 Presidential election. [12] Following the election,President Rajapaksa appointed Major General Gunaratne as Defense Secretary succeeding General Shantha Kottegoda on 19 November 2019. [13] In December 2020,he was elevated to the rank of general by President Rajapaksa. [14]
General Gunaratne has received some of the highest awards in the Sri Lankan armed forces,which includes the Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya,Rana Wickrama Padakkama and the Rana Sura Padakkama. [4] He was awarded the Command and Staff College,Quetta Centenary Medal by the Government of Pakistan in 2020. [15]

Major General Vanigamuni Indrajith Vijeyakumar Mendis Wimalaratne,RWP,RSP,VSV,USP was a senior Sri Lanka Army officer. One of the most distinguished field commanders in Sri Lanka,Wimalaratne raised the Gajaba Regiment,he commanded the 1st Brigade during the Vadamarachchi Operation,he commanded the Amphibious Task Force Commander during Operation Balavegaya and was the Commander Security Forces –Jaffna at the time of his death in a land mine explosion at Point Arali in the Kayts Island while making preparations to re-capture Jaffna.
Lieutenant General Parami Sudammika Bandara Kulatunga,RSP,VSV,USP was a Sri Lanka Army general. He was serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and its third highest-ranking officer at the time of his assassination. On the morning of 26 June,he was killed by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber who drove an explosives-laden motorbike into his staff car as it was driving to a military base at Pannipitiya near Colombo.
The Gajaba Regiment (GR) is an elite infantry regiment of the Sri Lankan Army. Formed on 14 October 1983 at the Saliyapura Camp in Anuradhapura,it is named after the famous Sinhalese King Gajabahu the First. It consists of 14 regular battalions and 6 volunteer battalions.
Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa,is a former Sri Lankan politician and military officer,who served as the eighth president of Sri Lanka from 18 November 2019 until his resignation on 14 July 2022. He previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development from 2005 to 2015 under the administration of his elder brother former President Mahinda Rajapaksa,during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
The Rajarata Rifles was a former rifle regiment of the Sri Lanka Army. It was one of only three geographically based regiments in the Sri Lanka army. The cap badge of the Raja Rata Rifles show the figure of a Bherunda Pakshiya.
The Battle of Pooneryn took place between the militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan military during the Sri Lankan Civil War for control of the military base in Pooneryn in northern Sri Lanka from 11 November to 14 November 1993.
Colonel Aslam Fazly Laphir,PWV,RWP,RSP,SF was a Sri Lankan Army officer and posthumous recipient of the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV). He was awarded the PWV for his actions leading the 1st Special Forces Regiment during the Battle of Mullaitivu in which he was killed. Colonel Laphir played a major role in the formation and development of the Special Forces Regiment from the original Combat Tracker Team.
The Battle of Vavunathivu took place during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It occurred on 7 March 1997 in which the LTTE militants attacked and overran the Sri Lanka Army military camp at Vavunathivu off Batticaloa.
General Jagath Jayasuriya,VSV,USP is a retired Sri Lanka Army officer;he was the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 15 July 2009 to 31 July 2013. During the closing stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War,he served as the Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni with overall command of SLA offensives in the Wanni region during the 2008 - 2009 period. He was also the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil,Argentina,Chile,Colombia,Peru and Suriname from June 2014 to August 2017.
Operation Thrividha Balaya was a combined military operation,the first of its kind,launched by the Sri Lankan Military in Jaffna. The Operation was carried out to break the siege of the Sri Lanka Army garrison of the old Dutch Jaffna Fort in Jaffna.
General Shavendra Silva,is a Sri Lanka Army four star general who is the current Chief of Defence Staff,the head of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces serving from 1 January 2020. He also served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 19 August 2019 to 31 May 2022. His other important appointments include,Chief of Staff of the army,Adjutant General and Director of Operations of the Army. During the Sri Lankan civil war he gained fame as the General Officer Commanding of the elite 58 Division. He had also served as the Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Headquarters.
General Shantha H.S. Kottegoda,WWV,RWP,RSP,VSV,USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army officer. He was the seventeenth commander of the Sri Lankan Army from 1 July 2004 –5 December 2005. He had served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil and Thailand. In April 2019,following the Easter Sunday bombings he was appointed as the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Defence.
Vice admiral Susith Maliya Bandara Weerasekara RSP,VSV,USP,ndu,psn,MSc. (DS) Mgmt,DISS,DIDSS was a commissioned officer of the Sri Lanka Navy. He was the highest ranked senior officer of the Sri Lanka Navy at the time he was overlooked for the position of Commander of the Navy,leading to his subsequent retirement. A committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena found that he was politically victimised by the previous government and he was promoted to the rank of vice admiral in October 2015.
Major General Jagath Dias,WWV,RWP,RSP,USP was a Sri Lankan general,who served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. He was the General Officer Commanding,57 Division and 56 Division. He was the Sri Lankan Deputy Ambassador to Germany,Switzerland and the Vatican.
General L. D. E. Cecil Waidyaratne,VSV,USP was a Sri Lanka Army general. He was 12th Commander of the Sri Lankan Army and a former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand.
General Akurathiya Withanage Jagath Crishanthe de Silva,RWP,USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army officer. He had served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 22 February 2015 to 4 July 2017,as the Chief of Defence Staff from 29 June 2017 to 21 August 2017. Later he was appointed as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Road to Nandikadal is a book about the defeat of the LTTE. It was written by former Major General Kamal Gunaratne. The book was released on 6 September 2016,a day after Gunaratne's retirement. The Sinhala and English versions of the book were released on the same day. It covers several incidents that occurred during the Sri Lankan Civil War,including the killing of Velupillai Prabhakaran.
Major General Galwaduge Janaka Laksiri Waduge,RWP,RSP,VSV,USP,ndu is a retired Sri Lankan army general. He was the 10th Commander Security Forces Headquarters –Central and the former Colonel commandant of Military Intelligence Corps. He retired from active service in 2020 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 55 for Sri Lankan Armed Forces Personnel.
Major General A. K. Sumedha Perera,WWV,RWP,RSP,USP is a retired Sri Lankan general. He is the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli,Agriculture,Irrigation and Rural Development;and former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.
Major General Jagath Gunawardena,RSP,VSV,USP was a Sri Lankan senior army officer. He was the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lankan Army,having served as the Commandant of the Volunteer Force,Commander,Security Forces Headquarters –Wanni and Master General of Ordnance. He served as the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Engineers.
