Kaning'ina is a residential town in Mzuzu in the northern region of Malawi. [1] [2] The town has a rich history dating back to the pre-colonial era, when it was a small village inhabited by the Tumbuka people. [3] The town is home to the Kaning'ina Lions Football Club. [4] [5]

History

Establishments

Kaning'ina was established as a short-lived mission by Robert Laws and William Koyi in 1878. [6] Attempting to convert the Ngoni people to Christianity, the station would only last a year.

A trading post by the British colonial administration in the early 20th century was established. It became a major commercial center in the region with increased development around Mzuzu. [7]

Location

Kaning'ina is located in the Mzimba district of Malawi, in the northern region of the country. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers north of the town of Mzuzu, and about 10 kilometers south of the town of Ekwendeni. [8] The town is nestled in a valley, surrounded by rolling hills and mountains.

Demographics

Kaning'ina has a population of approximately 2,500 people, who are predominantly from the Tumbuka ethnic group.

Economy

The economy of Kaning'ina is primarily based on agriculture, with many residents engaged in small-scale farming. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including shops, restaurants, and lodges.

M'mbelwa V is the fifth surviving son of the great-grandfather King Zwangendaba Jele and Queen Munene of the Nzima clan of present-day Eswatini. M'mbelwa V inherited his father's kingdom when he passed away in February 2013 at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Malawi's commercial city, Blantyre, where he was diagnosed with diabetes attack and hypertension. During his death, he was 56 years old. M'mbelwa V's headquarters is in Edingeni, Mzimba. He is married to Inkosikazi M'mbelwa V. During COVID-19 in 2020, he instructed the government to avoid mass gatherings of people.

Luwinga is a town north of Mzuzu city in Mzimba District, Malawi and forms part of the Mzuzu municipality. Institutions found in Luwinga include the third biggest referral hospital in Malawi, Mzuzu Central Hospital and Mzuzu University.

Zolozolo is a densely populated township in Mzuzu, Northern Region, Malawi. It is located north of Mzuzu. The township is reported to have massive gang activities and high levels of accident. It is known for its lively markets and rich cultural scene.

Mchengautuba(Tumbuka: White sands) is a residential and industrial town in Mzuzu. It is located North of Mzuzu, Northern Region, Malawi. It is a home to Mchengautuba United Team, as well as Mchengautuba FC. Chitumbuka is the predominant language spoken in the area which is also the official regional language of the Northern Region of Malawi. Priscilla Kayira is a Malawian radio broadcaster, presenter and television personality. In 2019, Kayira was nominated the Personality of the Year along with Luna and Sharon Chirwa in UMP Media Awards. She won the same award in the same category in 2020 and 2022.She was born in Mzuzu and moved to Southern Region to purse her career. She is a Tumbuka by tribe. Her role model was the former MBC-TV personality, Tamara Chafunya.

Nkhorongo(Tumbuka: Scattered trees) is a residential town in Luwinga, Mzuzu. It is located North of Mzuzu, Northern Region, Malawi. It is a home to a regional team, Nkhorongo United Team, as well as Nkholongo FC.

Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited is the only coffee company that produces international standard coffee in Malawi that operates in Northern Region of Malawi. It is located in Luwinga town and the company was established on 1 April 2007. Before it became the union, it operated as Smallholder Coffee Authority from 1979 to 1999 and as Smallholder Coffee Farmers Trust from 1999 to 2007 when coffee sector was liberalized in Malawi. In 2006 under a large European-Union influence project, the cooperative expanded and built many of its 61 CPUs and a centralized dry mill in Mzuzu town for hulling, processing, and export.
