Kanishka Singh (born 1978) is an Indian politician. He is a political aide to the Congress MP and former President, Rahul Gandhi. [2]

Early life

He was born to S. K. Singh, an IFS officer, former foreign secretary and ex-governor of Rajasthan and Manju. He is a computer engineer [3] and went to St. Stephen's College, Delhi. [4] He did his MBA from Wharton. His elder brother Shashank Singh, is a Harvard MBA and works in Mumbai. [5]

Career

Kanishka Singh started his career as an Investment banker on the Wall Street [6] working with merchant banking firm Lazard Freres & Co in New York, before he decided to join up with Rahul Gandhi. [7] He also worked with the World bank.

Political career

He entered politics in 2003 being part of the team that was behind Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit's electoral campaign.

After writing an article for Outlook magazine, proved to be a turning point in his career. [8] [9] [10] He has been a constant companion of Rahul Gandhi, ever since he won the Amethi seat in 2004. Among his contributions, a customised Request Management System software for speedy processing of appeals and grievances from Amethi. For Sonia Gandhi's election, He was in charge of door-to-door campaigning in the Saraini Assembly segment. [3] With his vital role alongside Rahul Gandhi, Kanishka Singh has also been named in the list of the most powerful Indians in 2012 where he has been ranked at no. 31. [11]

Amethi is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This constituency covers the entire Amethi district and was created in 1967. Like its neighbouring constituency Rae Bareli, it is considered to be a bastion of the Indian National Congress. Its first member of parliament (MP) was Vidya Dhar Bajpai of the Indian National Congress (INC) who was elected in 1967 and held his seat in the next election in 1971. In the 1977 election, Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party became its MP. Singh was defeated in 1980 by Sanjay Gandhi of the INC. Later the same year, Gandhi died in a plane crash. Gandhi held the seat till the 2019 election when he was defeated by a margin of 55,000 votes by the BJP's Smriti Irani. The Indian National Congress (INC) is one of the two major political parties in India. The prominent members of the party are the president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Priyanka Gandhi. INC took part in the elections alongside other members of the United Progressive Alliance. On the fourth anniversary of the second United Progressive Alliance government, the INC announced that its campaign for the election would be led by Prime minister Manmohan Singh, party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

The National Herald case is the ongoing case in a Delhi court filed by Indian economist and politician Subramanian Swamy against politicians Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, their companies and associated persons. As per the complaint filed in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate, Associated Journals Limited (AJL) took an interest-free loan of ₹90.25 crore (US$11 million) from Indian National Congress. It is alleged that the loan was not repaid. A closely held company, Young Indian, was incorporated in November 2010 with a paid up capital of 5 Lac and it acquired almost all the shareholding of AJL and all its properties. Swamy alleged criminal misappropriation by both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The 2022 Indian National Congress leadership election was an internal party election that was held to elect the next president of the Indian National Congress. A formal notification for the election was issued on 22 September 2022. The election was held on 17 October 2022 and counting of votes took place on 19 October 2022. Mallikarjun Kharge won the election amassing 7,897 votes compared to 1,072 of Shashi Tharoor.

Bharat Jodo Yatra was a mass movement which was held by the Indian National Congress. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi orchestrated the movement by encouraging the party cadre and the public to walk from Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a journey of 4,080 kilometres over almost 150 days.
