Karam Singh Veriah (October 26, 1936 - January 22, 1994), was a socialist politician from Malaysia. [1] He won the Damansara seat at 23 in the 1959 elections, representing Parti Rakyat Malaysia which was then part of the Socialist Front coalition. [2]
He simultaneously won the Serdang seat in the Selangor state assembly. [2] In 1967, he was detained without trial for four years under Malaysia's Internal Security Act. [3] Upon his release, he continued working as a lawyer and activist but eventually died of a heart attack in 1994. [4]
Karam was the eldest in a family of five boys and four girls. He was born on 26 October 1936, in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. [1] His father, Kaher Singh Veriah, was a clerk who later studied law and joined the Malaysian Indian Congress. He was elected as Port Dickson assemblyperson in the 1955 elections held just prior to Malaya's independence. Kaher died in a car accident in 1964. [1]
Karam studied at King George V School in Seremban. He did his Senior Cambridge at 15 and completed law studies by 19 at Gray's Inn, London. But the rules of the time prevented him from practising until he was 21. [1] He then returned to Malaya and threw himself into electoral politics as a member of the Socialist Front. [5]
He also worked as legal adviser for the United Malayan Estate Workers Union, Malayan Workers Welfare Society and the Socialist Youth League. Karam was also vice-president of PRM during the time of Ahmad Boestamam's leadership, being elected to the role in November 1957. [6]
In the 1959 elections, he contested the Damansara parliamentary seat against MCA's Lee Eng Teh. He won decisively by garnering 9,026 votes compared to Lee's tally of 5,653. [5]
Karam also won the Serdang state assembly seat by defeating another MCA man Chan Chee Hong by a majority of 1,889 votes. He polled 5,883 votes against Chan's 3,994. [5]
However he did not defend his seats in the 1964 election which was held soon after the formation of Malaysia. [2] In April 1967, he was detained for four years in solitary confinement under the ISA for leading a march of sacked rubber plantation workers from Bukit Asahan Estate in Malacca to Kuala Lumpur. [5]
Described by his party colleague Dr Syed Husin Ali as a gentle speaker who could be fiery in Parliament, Karam Singh was also drawn to the struggle for justice in India. [5]
Karam brought his family to India and took up the cause of low-ranking police officers. [2] However, his successes in agitation got him expelled from India and he was denied entry for many years. [2] In 1985, Karam briefly joined the DAP splinter party Socialist Democratic Party, led by ex-MP Fan Yew Teng. [3]
Karam died in New Delhi in the mid-1990s, aged 57. [3]
He was married to Harbans Kaur Muker, who worked as a temporary teacher at Assunta Primary School during his detention. She died on March 6, 1973. [7]
His daughter Harinder died in Hong Kong on Jan 2, 2000. Her widowed husband, leftist journalist Martin Jacques filed a lawsuit over her death claiming racial prejudice and medical negligence at the hospital which treated her. [8]
His son Keshminder served as a municipal councillor in Subang Jaya appointed by Parti Keadilan Rakyat, following its breakthrough in the 2008 general elections in Malaysia. He died on Nov 28, 2023. [9]

Abdullah was an editor and reporter for several newspapers which compelled him with the Ahmad pen-name honouring Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.
The Alliance Party was a political coalition in Malaysia. The Alliance Party, whose membership comprised United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), was formally registered as a political organisation on 30 October 1957. He was also the Leader of the Opposition of Negeri Sembilan and State Chairman of the PR of Negeri Sembilan.
Nik Ahmad Kamil bin Nik Mahmud was a Malaysian politician who played an active role during the country's road to independence. A prominent member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the state of Kelantan, he served as the fourth Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of the Malaysian Parliament.
The Malayan Peoples' Socialist Front or better known as Socialist Front (SF) or Barisan Sosialis (BS) was a left-wing coalition of Malaysian socialist parties. It was among the longest-standing opposition coalitions in Malaysian general election history. The coalition was formed by Parti Rakyat Malaya (PRM) and the Labour Party of Malaya on Hari Merdeka in 1957. In 1964, the National Convention Party (NCP) joined the coalition. PRM left the coalition in 1965 and NCP soon become inactive. The Labour Party, the only remaining party in SF, abandoned it on 10 January 1966 and reverted to its own banner.
A by-election was held for the Dewan Rakyat parliamentary seat of Bukit Gelugor on 25 May 2014 following the nomination day on 12 May 2014. The seat fell vacant after the passing of the incumbent MP, Karpal Singh in a motor accident near Kampar, Perak on 17 April 2014. Karpal hailed from the Democratic Action Party, a component party of Pakatan Rakyat. A political and legal veteran, he served in the Parliament since 1978 and as the chairman of the DAP from 2004 until 2014. He won by a majority of 41,778 votes against Barisan Nasional candidate Teh Beng Yeam in the 2013 general election.

Tan Sri Dato' Mohamad Ariff bin Md Yusof is a Malaysian politician who served as the 9th Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, the lower chamber of the Parliament of Malaysia from July 2018 to his removal from speakership in July 2020. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. He resigned from all AMANAH party positions but not membership to become more impartial after being appointed to the Dewan Rakyat speakership. Therefore, he remains an AMANAH ordinary member.

The seat became vacant after the resignation of the incumbent member Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, a member of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the governing Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. This was the first federal by-election since the 9 May 2018 general election (GE14), which saw the first-ever change of federal government in Malaysia's history.
Syed Husin bin Ali was a Malaysian academic and politician who served as president of the left-wing Parti (Sosialis) Rakyat Malaysia. He was also a prominent political detainee, who was held for six years without trial under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, from 1974 to 1980. Following the merger of Parti Rakyat Malaysia with Parti Keadilan Nasional, he held the position of deputy president of the merged entity Parti Keadilan Rakyat from 2003 to 2010. He also served two terms in Malaysia's Senate from 2009 to 2015.
Abdul Razak Ahmad was a human rights lawyer and socialist politician who served as deputy president of the Parti Rakyat Malaysia in the 1980s and 1990s. He contested in general elections from the 1970s to 2004 but did not win a seat in 14 contests, although he once came within 22 votes of defeating his opponent. He also gained nationwide notoriety for protesting against a visit to Singapore by an Israeli president by lying across a railway track. Razak died at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru where he had been admitted after suffering from chest pains. At the time of his passing in 2007, he left behind his wife Kintan Mohd Amin and four children Zulkifli, Juliah, Faizal and Azlina.
